Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

They do update the costumes, it's just that a lot of the updated costumes don't sit well with the writers or artists and they go back to the original.

The only costume update that kinda stuck around was Doc Ock's white suit, but he'll still more often than not be wearing the jumpsuit.

With Rhino in particular, their way of updating his outfit is to give him what basically amounts to a mech suit, which is heavily missing the point.

I was under the impression Spidey's rogues were pretty powerful and had the potential to be much bigger threats.

Dudes like Electro and (hilariously enough) the Spot could do a lot more if they were a bit smarter.

Rhino was fighting Hulk for a bit, and Sandman spent a few years as a Fantastic Four villain.

They could be more if they weren't so focused on Spidey.

Spidey's rogues are a pro-wrestling stable.

Like the Wrecking Crew, they can job for virtually any hero.

....Has Pete ever fought the Wrecking Crew?

Like, if we're going for wrestling allusions, I have called him the mid carder of the Marvel Universe, able to go up against almost anyone.

He fought Thunderball one time, but that fight was in the same issue as the time he visited the make-a-wish kid so it gets overshadowed.

I mean even the Runaways have fought the Wrecking Crew.

And I feel the WC should have won that one.

However, I do recall Spiderman, Wolverine, and Spiderwoman (secretly Skrull Queen) fighting the Wrecker and all of them getting their ass handed to them. It was one of the funniest moments of the Wrecker because he didn't actually have to fight to win (being as he had the power of Thor versus three mid-carders) but was too dumb to realize it. It was in one of the early New Avengers.

The Wrecking Crew have a tendency to fight everybody at some point or another. They work fairly well as all-purpose supervillains you can just throw the hero against for an issue to have some fun.

I mentioned it elsewhere I sometimes really liked the Hood for pointing out fan points.

Like when he points out to Thunderball with his intelligence and strength that he should be an A-Lister.

There's also the fact that Vulture's flight harness gives him a major advantage. Spidey can swing on webs, climb buildings, but he can't fly. So fighting the Vulture is always an uphill struggle.

That is, if Vulture's arsenal was primarily about attacking from afar and actually using his flight.

The fact that he has to fly into close combat to attack anyone should immediately negate his advantage against someone with spider-sense and insane reflexes.

So changing subjects anyone remember the original What if Spidey kept the Venom Symbiote.

This Venom was just straight up an evil body swapping parasite.

Drained Peter of all his youth despite the avengers best efforts to save him then goes after Hulk.

Peter dies to Felicia's heartbreak

Venom!Hulk and Thor have a knock out drag out fight with Thor saving Banner only to get attacked by the Symbiote.

Black Bolt steps in and scream the creature off the Asgardian and Felicia kills Venom with a sonic rat gun avenging her love.

Really shows how time has changed Marvel's stance on Venom from "cool high tech suit" to John Carpenter esque monster to tragic misfit alien that just wants companionship.

Funnily enough, there was a miniseries that revisited the concept of Spidey not getting the suit off in time.

Preview of ASM #29 popped up the other day.

So, how many people had to sweep in and save Peter in this run? Because having J. Jonah Jameson bailing him out feels like it's hitting a new all-time low.

On the flip side, it seems there's actually a reason why Otto suddenly remembers the stuff from his tenure as the Superior Spider-Man.

Yeah! I spoke about it here when I read it a while ago. It's a neat story, I like several parts - Black Cat's part in it, and Peter finding a way to stop it before he died... but like a lot of what ifs, I can't help but feel baited by the premise because Spidey doesn't keep the symbiote for very long.tongue

I'm still waiting for a What If where he used the actual costume machine and the symbiote stayed there. (Or someone else found it if he didn't.)

Yes, the original comics had Peter getting weaker and weaker

Modern ones have him corrupted by the power.

I think the whole bit about the Symbiote corrupting Spidey actually came from the 90s cartoon.

Because of all the jokes that funny people make about Peter’s commitment issues being the reason he got rid of the symbiote, I’m waiting for the take where he ditches it because it kept asking to hang out in non superhero situations
