This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.
- Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
- Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
- Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread
which covers them.
Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.
Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.
Please follow the spoiler policy rules
- tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

The real MJ has been stuck in Doc Ock’s tentacles and that’s why they’re so affectionate to Peter

Nah, I'm fine. I'm probably spending a lot of time on Spider-Man circles on Twitter. They really don't like this run on ASM.
TL:DR later-Spencer ASM just make GM tired. Tired and anxious. So much time passed and so much is said in those issue without anything actually happening. Just retcons and people hiding things from each other and backtracking on older stories without anything new being put in the pot.
And honestly, for me, even just listening to people talk about modern-era ASM, or any long running comic book is kind of exhausting. And I like Spider-Man stuff, I like keeping up with the stuff, but man are some of the decisions aggravating.

For a long time now, there's been a belief that Spider-Man creatives rag on the fans by having bad things happen to Peter. I've often wondered where this all came from, and how accurate it is. Slott for one has been known to taunt people, but he's also strongly denied his stories, or likely anyone's, are intentional Take That, Audience! screeds.
I liked Spencer's run at first. It felt like it brought a lot of fun and energy to the book. At least before the Kindred stuff kicked into high gear.
I read Beyond out of curiosity and then finished it out of obligation. Didn't bother reading the run after that once I heard that it started with a time skip where Peter exploded and everyone hated him about it.
The end of Spencer was a slog, Beyond was a slog, and they weren't going to get me again.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWhich is really sad, because Beyond sounds like a great idea on paper. Peter is recovering and Ben takes over for a bit. Maybe have some cute moments with Pete and MJ away from the hustle and bustle of hero life, have Ben fight some of Peter's regular enemies, doing better against some and worse against others. It doesn't have to be a long arc, just enough for Pete to recover and Ben to get back into his groove.
But no, someone high up in the chain of command thinks that Spider-Man is an acronym for
Suffering Pain Impotence Despair Excruciation Ridicule Misery Apathy Nihilism
so neither can have success for long.
Thank goodness I have retcon powers otherwise this comment would make me look dumb.

Spencer’s run was a lot of fun, until it got completely mired in the Kindred stuff, which was not only confusing but came out of absolutely left field and seemed to exist only to retcon something I thought we’d all agreed to pretend didn’t happen anyway.
I enjoyed Beyond, until it became apparent what they were setting up with Ben going forward.
The current run is a mess. The sheer amount of audience-alienating premises makes it almost impossible to objectively judge the quality, but I’d say there’s been nothing outside those which has been good enough to balance it out. The mystery was incredibly frustrating and left to sit for way too long without any real developments, almost like they forgot about it. Not to mention the tastelessness of the recent death. Definitely hoping for it to end.
I think Spencer's strongest stuff was all of the non-Kindred plot lines.
I like all of the Boomerang stuff, that's always a feature, and that one Jameson issue where they go through his history was very cool.
I think if the Kindred stuff had a decent payoff instead of it being Harry Osborn vaguely posturing about OMD or something people would remember his run much more fondly.
Also I'm still confused at why he brought Ned back from the dead when he showed his corpse in an earlier issue.
The writers certainly did. I think Gabriel or Sarah appeared once afterwards, and there was a decade long gap in appearances between these two stories.
Stories that focused on Gwen's perspective like the clone conspiracy weren't bringing it up, and none of the Norman centric stories were either, and we got a lot of those.
Yeah that’s more what I was getting at, that the only time Sins Past has even come up recently was to retcon it. Aside from being infamous in the fandom, it’s something that was almost completely ignored in the comics.
Still very glad to be rid of it, even if it was a long and convoluted walk to get there.
Making Mephisto Spider-Man's Big Bad is just such a dumb fucking idea though.
And I can't help but feel it was introduced just to make Norman sympathetic enough to ease his transition into Gold Goblin.
Even though it involves selling his son to Mephisto.
