Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

Speaking of Kamala, it's pretty symbolic at how she's used as a prop for a Spider-Man story so Peter can ANGST over her, since she's actually a legit young marvel hero who appeals to the younger generation of readers, while Spider-Man's fans have been clamoring for him to finally grow up and move on as an adult.

So it's extra fucked up that Marvel kills off a character like Kamala for the benefit of a Spider-Man story in a run that's meant to stagnant Peter and keep him a loser because that's what the editorial thinks is his appeal.

Peter is like mid 20s according to the Nick Spencer run.

I feel like the old and creaky comment makes more sense if it's a comment that even in his 20's Peter's body is already worn down from the decade of superhero work

Even his regen can't fully recover from all the times he got shocked, crushed, stabbed, suffocated, bitten, torn, shot, and just generally every other kind of ailment possible.

It's a lot and of course he's wearing his body out faster.

I headcanon Peter as anywhere between 32 and 37. I just don't believe he could have gone through everything in the main continuity and not be that old.

Peter B. Parker is exactly how I'd picture Spider-Man from Amazing Fantasy #15 to the modern day to look and act like.

I don't think he's ever been redesigned in the comics, has he? So it's not really the "old" design

I wonder if he'll get a costume redesign during the series?

It was originally a magically created costume from when the power was bestowed, not something Pavitr created?

Nick Lowe revealed in the letters page of this week's ASM that a "marvel legend" wrote them a long letter in private that critiqued the way the book is being written. It was in response to a reader who was concerned about the pacing and decompression of the story. Wonder who it was?

Lowe also got a critical letter from someone who was annoyed that they only seemed to run feedback that was positive (or "butt kissing" as the reader put it), Lowe took issue with this but said he gets worse feedback off of twitter (indicating also that most tweeters don't read the book in full), and citing that if anything will cause a course correction, it's when sales are lacking, but they're good for now so they're carrying on.

[up] Kinda curious what the letters about Kamala's death will be like. You gotta imagine they'll be getting some angry ones. Like, if that letters page isn't at least half negative, then it's safe to assume they're cherry-picking.

[up][up]

I was just about to ask if anyone saw that.

Yeah, when "a legendary Spidey creator" writes in to ask "bruh, what the actual hell are you doing over there," then all the red flags just turned into a huge mega red flag with flashing neon lights that read "seriously, things are FUBAR over here!"

Speaking of red flags, ASM 27 showed that Peter kept Kamala's mask and I guess it's supposed to have a memento of her, but A, he barely knew her secret identity and B, wouldn't it have been more appropriate to give it to Miles, who actually knew her or heck, her family? This just screams that Zeb Wells and Nick Lowe are either not reading the room or just refusing to read the room because you'd have to be living under a particularly thick rock to not realize all this is wrong.

And speaking of wrong, not only does Peter sleep with the mask, which has implications I'd rather not say out loud, but Kamala's death is being spun as the start of Norman's redemption or something? Which...EHHHH?!? A more competent writer would've explored how MJ felt that a girl she didn't know got herself killed just to keep MJ safe, but NOPE! Old Zeb don't like to delve into girlies for too long because OOOH COOTIES! (Or something.)

Seriously, can we officially consider this run a masterclass in how not to write Spider-Man comics in general? Please?

Mysterio India looks very Asura inspired.

If all his villains are basically just Asura Supervillains Id be down for it.

[up][up][up]I feel like, if Kamala had been a real supporting character, ASM would have had Peter go talk to her family about what happened. Instead, they're doing that "Fallen Friend" or whatever it's called as a separate comic, allowing them to not have to spend a single panel of ASM thinking about the feelings of anyone actually connected to Kamala. Because she wasn't a genuine supporting character, she was a marketing-driven sacrifice to set up her return as her movie version. Honestly, Wells has written plenty of good stuff, so I am inclined to think her inclusion here was driven by either editorial or, even more likely, marketing. Someone in marketing said, "Hey, find a way to make her a mutant with energy powers." Lowe and Wells just got hit with that shitball.

After reading the latest issue, I'm kind of convinced MJ was supposed to die here and they changed things at the last minute.

Like, Peter sleeping with MJ's stuff would be weird too, but you could make that work in a way you can't with Kamala.

CBR wrote an article on the need for an adult Spider-Man show.

Superman & Lois serves as a model that Sony and Marvel could emulate for a Peter Parker TV series. Back in the late 1970s, Nicholas Hammond brought Spider-Man to TV for the first time. Yet, the limits of visual effects in those days underwhelmed adult viewers. Superman & Lois proves that a VFX-heavy series about a middle-aged superhero is something that can be pulled off on a TV budget. It also gives Spider-Man's great ensemble cast a chance to shine. Characters like Flash Thompson, Betty Brant or others could become fully-realized versions of their comics' counterparts.

While kids await a new Miles Morales movie every three to five years, Spider-fans can tune into Peter Parker's adventures 13-to-22 times per year. As the big screen spectacles get more involved with multiverses and world-ending threats, a Peter Parker TV series could bring Spider-Man back down to Earth. It could also give longtime comics fans the Peter Parker and MJ romance story they've been waiting for.

Peter Parker was immediately relatable because he was a hero with problems kids understood. Miles Morales is equally relatable while also expanding the representational aspect of kids seeing heroes who look like them. However, the one thing Spider-Man has never really done is grow up, at least until Peter B. Parker came along. Sure, Sony could put Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield back in the suit and make a grown-up Spider-Man movie. Yet, features don't have the narrative space to truly examine the kind of emotional stories and struggles that a middle-aged Spidey would face. TV, on the other hand, allows for storytellers to take their time. The show wouldn't need the big third-act spectacle that's come to define modern superhero films.

Over in Marvel's Pride-centric Voices book, there is a Felicia story where it's strongly indicated Felicia is done with Peter, or doesn't think much of their relationship, confessing to Gambit that they're 'nothing'. That said, Spidey cameos at the end

Unironically, I think Marvel could actually kill the Peter and MJ romance the same way DC killed Batman and Catwoman.

[up][up] That one's set early in the Wells run, isn't it? And Felicia is definitely protesting too hard, changing the subject every time Gambit mentions him. Although Felicia and Candra having a fling is a fun idea...
