Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

How long ago was the 90s approximately?

I’m wondering how old Mayday would be if Marvel ever acknowledges her 616 self again

At this point, it feels like two years ago in universe, really.

And given how things are, it'd be no surprise if it's just a few months.

I remember hearing something about the Carnage symbiote identifying as a girl at one time. Maybe it was after giving birth to Toxin?

After Carnage spawned Toxin, Cletus had a hoot about it and now thinks of his symbiote as a female.

AFAIK the symbiote itself never identifies as male or female, just as 'chaos itself'. The closest it got was when Toxin asked where it's other parent was only for Carnage to tell it that's not how symbiote biology work.

So really any pronouns is legit for Carnage.

Huh, TBH, I kinda do see the Carnage symbiote as a girl but gender doesn't really matter for Symbiotes I guess.

RE:Mayday 616.

I was wondering if Norman was going to raise her himself.

Well the symbiotes have no visible sex organs and can self-reproduce

They don't really have a gender by human standards

So yeah it would depend on how they choose to personally identity themselves as. Cletus referring to Carnage as a female is most likely since he's a redneck so he's not comfortable having a borderline romantic relationship with an entity that can be constituted as male.

Good Norman brings up the baby on his list of regrets in the gold goblin book. It'd be really weird if his sins were gone and he's allegedly redeemed but he still doesn't give Mayday back.

...Well.

If it wasn't leaked by Marvel themselves and it was too early to have been leaked by the distributors or Marvel themselves, then...

...Who leaked it? Could it have been...God?

[up][up][up][up] Honestly "on sight murder" should be the only approiapte response for Peter Parker towards Norman

You don't take a man's kid

But Editorial refuses to acknowledge Mayday exists in any meaningful way after the dropped kidnapping plot

It's like if Black Manta and Aqua man became friends despite the former killing the latter's infant son and bragging about it.

[up] That actually did happen recently

It was in the Aquamen run where they attempted to turn Black Manta into a hero

This moment was especially cringeworthy, baby Andy reaching out to Manta and Mera just smiling as her baby is in the same room with a mass murdering terrorist

Yeah, Peter should be more likely to bite Norman's face off in a fit of psychotic rage than to talk to him at this point.

Are we all just forgetting that? How Peter was characterized by spurts of violent anger for a long time in serialization, even towards his fellow heroes?

A reliable comics commentator called 'longboxof90scomics' who gets comics early has read all of ASM#26 and besides the big death there are no major status quo shifts, and that MJ continues to act particularly cold and bitchy for no reason at all (actually, he described her an entirely different way, but it's NSFW)

[up][up][up][up].....Wow there's insane forgiveness then there's that. Like I get comics have this insane phobia of heroes killing their rouges but you can't go back around and have them all chummy after they done heinous shit like infanticide.

Stuff like that is why I can't take superheroes seriously.

This is why Norman's first death was so perfect. He committed a horrible, unforgivable act, and then shortly after offed himself in an attempt to kill Peter. It allowed Norman to do something horrible but permanent, and punish him in a satisfying and conclusive manner.

There's a reason the first Spider-Man movie adapted it the way it did.

[up][up][up] After this runs I expect nothing but Felicia. As with the butchering of MJ's character I don't think fans will accept MJ as Peter's love interest again for quite some time......unless of course Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 and Across The Spider-Verse blow this crappy run out the water

[up][up][up] In this case it has to do with the fact that very little of the pre-New 52 Aquaman remains and still hasn't been brought.

Which means Arthur Jr. their first son is still retconned out and as a result Andy is treated as their first child, so there is nothing to forgive Manta for as he hasn't killed Arthur and Mera's kid at any point. It also means Arthur's Inuit son Koryak is still retconned out too.

The run has plenty of cringeworthy moments. There's one issue with a scene of Atlantean school kids naming their favorite superhero and one kid names Black Manta cause of his cool armor.

Luckily the book was a bomb, got cancelled early, and Manta is back to being a hero. Pushing Manta as a hero is a combo effect of being a father of Jackson Hyde who similarly got a huge push in the Infinite Frontier era as the next Aquaman, and Manta's popularity meant they attempted to subject him to the same anti-hero softening Deathstroke, Harley Quinn, and Deadshot all got.

[up][up] People aren't going to give up on Peter and MJ. If OMD couldn't do it, neither will this. Felicia doesn't stand a chance, and the games and movies have way more sway over public perception of what is endgame than a dying industry like comic books

So just wondering where do we stand on the worst Spider-Man stories now.

1. Sins Past/OMD

2. Zeb Well's current run

3. Clone Saga

Saiga Since: Feb, 2011 Relationship Status: Getting away with murder

I haven't read the Clone Saga yet, but some day...

Of the other three, frankly, Sins Past is fucking kino compared to OMD or this run. It's fine art. It's a flawless masterpiece, the pinnacle of human achievement.

Like the premise of Osborn banging Gwen and the secret kids is fucking terrible, don't get me wrong, and the story also decides to focus on the cuckold angle at one point to make it extra gross... but JMS actually makes the rest of the story work. It doesn't make much of a difference, because the bad is just SO BAD, ruining both the story and damaging the entire comic, but it's still a story of Peter's selflessness saving Sarah's life and winning her over. It's got something going for it.

Wells' run has had absolutely nothing redeeming about it outside of Peter and Felicia being together, and even that is so fucking underutilized it's absurd. Further, the way the story has been told it's absolutely terrible. It should not take twenty-five issues to unravel the most basic mystery ever, a mystery that was only unknown because we simply don't have the knowledge the characters we're following have and they refuse to talk about it. It's just a continuous slog for Peter, there's been nothing interesting or compelling about the drama manufactured for it, and now it's going to get an unrelated, underutilized and frankly important character killed off just for some incredibly cheap angst and some super obvious MCU synergy. Just awful.

And it's still not as bad as OMD. An utterly awful story even if you ignore the absolutely idiotic goal the story had, the story itself is absolutely moronic. It requires everyone in the marvel universe to be powerless to fix a bullet (except in the post-OMD timeline), it presents a situation where Peter is saving someone's life against their wishes and makes a deal with the fucking devil Devil in order to dodge responsibility, scuttling one of the core messages of the series, and it obviously makes this a win for said devil that can never be walked back. And now it leaves a permanent mark on the series where its protagonist is mystically marked to never progress, never be happy, permanently barred from his soul mate and utterly unaware of what he lost, nor able to do anything about it. They seriously had one of their major heroes make a deal with the fucking devil and that's the end of that story. Absolutely insane.

Oh and the art is terrible
