Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Honestly...the Spider editorial seem to have a rather narrow view of the character. Everything can be boiled down to "Peter must be a young and single loser that can never succeed at any aspect in life". These are the elements that must always be maintained...no matter how bad the plot is to ensure it.

There is borderline NTR in a mainstream Spider-Man comic.

That's how badly the writers and editorials will keep Spider-Man in this status quo.

Someone will eventually change things.

Eventually, people who liked the marriage will decide it's time to come back.

Bucky came back. Jason Todd came back. Barry Allen and Hal Jordan came back.

Fucking Thunderbird is back.

Anything can change. You just have to believe.

More logically, if they decide there's more money in bringing back the marriage, we'll see it again.

The editors are saying the writers don’t want the marriage back and there’s no rule against it. But Slott and Spencer both seemed to want to get the couple back together only to stop short.

I've rewatched Into the Spider-Verse to refresh my memories before the sequel and it's funny how much Peter B. Parker's situation resembles the current scenario in the comics; of course, not only is it Played for Laughs rather than used as an excuse to keep the status quo of Peter as an everyman, but it also has him growing as a person, regaining his motivation, and succeding, which is what makes his story so special to the character of Spider-Man.

oh hey how are you doing?

At the risk of going back to a subject many of us have Strong Views on -

Do we know if this is actually the end of Wells' time on Amazing Spider-Man? Or is this just the end of this phase of his mega-arc, with more to come after the shocking twists and Mayan arc ends?

"I did all this, over to you" would be... quite a way to end it. I'm guessing there is some more positive finale to come? Maybe?

This run literally is NTR.

Peter is in a happy relationship with MJ ready to go to the next level

Plot happens that gets them trapped in a dimension with the writer's SI OC Paul

Paul convinces MJ to send Peter away because "he's in more danger then her"

MJ decides Peter is taking to long to rescue her and hooks up with Paul then "adopts" two kids that look exactly like her.

Peter rescues them and MJ decides to stay with Paul while saying how Peter is always a "mess"

Peter spends the rest of the run trying and failing talk with the girl who left him for another man, while taking Ls.

Heck Peter is working for Norman Osborn. The man who killed Gwen Stacy and screwed her in the now retconned Sin's Past.

(The first time Marvel editorial to NTR Peter over fear of "aging" him)

That's like main line Batman getting a job under the Joker all because he's been cured of his insanity and goes only by Jack Napier. (I've read White Knight)

In other news, Kid Venom looks a lot more fun and interesting than Spider-Boy.

He reminds me of a Kimetsu character for some reason.

Also nice that this Venomverse looks better than the original.

It's actually about introducing fun new alternate versions of characters than just character composites like the last one.

Cullen Bunn got a second chance to do it right. tongue

[up][up][up] The only thing that stops this from being full on NTR is that we don't see MJ fuck Paul.

At least Marvel has some standards.

[up][up] Agreed. The original Venomverse thing was basically just low-quality attempt at fanservice- pretty much the only one who had an entertaining personality *and* good design was Gwenpool and she didn't even show up in the main comic- well, the Ghost Rider one was awesome in his side comic but lame as hell in the main one. I'm definitely sick of the weird multiverse stuff that's basically glorified fanservice, but hey, this sounds better than the first- and also, hey, Andi was mentioned to be in it so I'm down. (anything to see my blorbo again...)

[up][up] Also, Mary Jane didn't consciousally make the choice of being with Paul and the kids, as we see in ASM#25, Rabin's magic is what compels her to settle down with them ("she must come to accept her chains"). There's still a mystery to Paul and MJ's relationship as we don't know what Paul 'should have told' MJ and there was also the lack of hospital records for him.

It's not up to MJ entirely, the interesting development will be when she learns she was shackled or if she is unshackled, and the choices she'll have to make then. Right now she's still under a spell and we'll have to see if it wears off after ASM#26.

As for Brevoort's comments...he really does try to spin it as if he's not lost control of the narrative, and let's face it, Marvel have. You can cling to 616 as the end-all/be-all all you want, but the truth is most of the major alternate universe Peter Parkers who have been allowed to grow up, get married and have kids ALL HAVE THE SAME PRE-OMD HISTORY AS 616. Why do you think it's been so easy for fans like me to 'count' them and not 616?

The only things that make 616 distinct in this century is all the changes that came after 1999 and frankly most of them aren't that popular or even neccersary to the narrative. Peter already has grown up, he's found his place, and more to the point, he's been living happily ever after. Marvel must realize this, and maybe that's why they take so much of their frustration over that on versions of Peter and MJ they can control, because by large the characters have completely gotten away from them.

[up]Yep. The Playstation games and Spiderverse movies have far more influence on the general perception of the characters than the comics do anymore. The comics at this point are really just bad fanfic for editorial.

Just read the new Edge of Venomverse, with "What if Black Cat Wore the Symbiote" by Al Ewing.

Turns out the costume and Felicia get along splendidly, Felicia accepts a permanent bond with it, and the symbiote was only giving Peter a hard time because he fears committing. Felicia also believes Peter is afraid of commiting to her and tells him he's better off calling Mary Jane. She leaves and Johnny ends the story teasing Peter while he wallows in misery wearing his bag man costume

@Red Hunter 543 Marvel clearly didn't have any standards when they retconned "girl next door" Gwen Stacy to sleep with her future killer Osborn complete with Goblin O face.

Funny thing @Zarius Mind comtrol/hypnosis/drugging is the plot for like 90% of NTR that and blackmail
