This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.
- Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
- Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
- Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread
which covers them.
Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.
Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.
Please follow the spoiler policy rules
- tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

Didn't DC also just bring back Donna's child with him?
Oh, and MJ didn't have a 'long list' of post-Peter flings after OMD, she went out with Bobby Carr until he got caught up with drugs, and that firefighter Pedro who she got bored of and moved away from off-panel. Her next relationship after that was Peter again.
She's only with Paul because Rabin chained her to him and the kids. Her choices are not her own here, which is how you know it will be easy to unshackle her

That's if Lowe wants MJ unshackled anytime soon. As Marvel has made it explicitly clear they don't want Peter and MJ back together ever in the mainline continuity
So just like Mark Wolfman got to keep his SI Terry married to Donna Troy for as long as he was in control of Titans
Paul is gonna keep staying with MJ.
They will periodically tease MJ and Peter coming back to drive up sales for a bit.
I think them getting back together in Spencer's run was one of the reasons Paul and MJ getting together is so painful for a lot of fans. It's a harsh reminder of the status quo that Peter must be single since he's a mascot.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"Its back and forth a lot.
Peter and MJ were at odds but events around Spider-Island brought them back together and gave them a Moment. Then Superior happened and drove them apart. And then the Spencer run has them coming back together and ends with a big declaration by both Mephisto and Dr Strange that they're OTP and significant. The Beyond run emphasized how much MJ cared about Peter. Then the next run has them apart in a mystery box time skip way.
Its not will they, won't they. Despite editorial insistence that its writer preference that the characters not be together, it does feel like there's a mandate keeping them apart. But the fans like them together and various adaptations show Peter and MJ as The relationship. So the book keeps dangling the characters next to each other to get hopes up and then yanking them apart either because outrage sells or because otherwise it'd be weird that they weren't together.
Its really annoying. I've stopped bothering to read Spider-Man because this game of keep away IS impacting the quality of the book as a whole. Its not just a preference of ship. Its that Peter is not allowed to grow or advance in any way.

The revitalized discussion over whether its okay for Jessica Drew to fight while pregnant cause of Spider-Verse reminds me of an interesting bit about the conception of her son
We don't know the father of the child and neither does she. Jess got pregnant from an anonymous sperm donor at the sperm clinic. So even regardless of who the father could be, its not someone Jess has any sort of emotional attachment too.

OK, that was pretty hilarious. Who's the creative team there? The writer and artist both sold the awkwardness brilliantly.
For the Jessica Drew part in the movie she's married but she and her unamed husband want to keep the baby's gender a surprise.
Still pregnant badass is a trope I've always been ambivalent about.
On one hand the image of a heavily pregnant Jessica Drew beating Green Goblin half to death with his own glider is hilarious
On the other hand I'm asking lady does S.H.I.E.L.D not have maternity or something?
For me it's just insanely irresponsible and feels like it's trying too hard
Not a fan of that at all
I'm not willing to believe Bendis is entirely off the hook for this. He's written plenty of weird crap and we don't know whose idea it was for Wolverine to try and rape MJ - but at the very least, he allowed it to happen.
I just don't understand what Marvel is trying to do. Who are they trying to sell this approach? Who likes manchild Spidey and is alienated by him no longer being a teenager, but a guy pushing 30 with some stability? That can be relatable and still be street level.
And Mary Jane is "Spider-Man's girlfriend" to the world. The upside-down kiss has far more influence that whatever Quesada tried to pull. The shenanigans ARE the Audience-Alienating Premise.
Like I said hate watching, there is no long term strategy beyond be infamous for this trollish story that Spider-Man fans hates
Zeb Wells loves writing this mellow drama and from the interview about Kamala's death Nick Lowe is fully on board and giddy with the idea.
The older you get the more you realize the creators most comic books are only slightly better than fanfic writers.
Paul is literally an OC love interest for MJ shoved into the story because Zeb prefers Black Cat.
So MJ get derailed in the eyes of fans as unwilling to wait for Peter after she shoved him through the portal.
Side note in what world did MJ's decision to shove Peter through the portal make any God forsaken sense. She has no powers there is already a second Spider-Man (Miles) in NY along with other heroes who can help once the authorities find her
Peter can survive on the run much better than she could with her random "Jackpot" powers that can kill her.

×8 Was this page from Red Goblin or Venom? Both released a new issue this week.
With pregnant Jessica Drew, I have to say still engaging in super-stuff while heavily pregnant is just insanely stupid as Hell.
Like regardless of her being an enhanced superhuman she's still endangering the child. We would give Peter plenty of grief if he brings baby Mayday with him when he fights a supervillain.

Ah then to answer that question, the creative team for Venom is Al Ewing with CAFU as artist
I bring it up because it is now a hilarious controversy because Spider-Verse is adapting Jess' pregnancy story.
I checked twitter and of course there are many people arguing about it, its funny as fuck.
Which honestly is better than people complaining about the race-lift Jess has gotten I guess.

For so many years Marvel couldn't decide if S.H.I.E.L.D. was really an international organisation or a purely American one with a global mission statement.

Really I take more issue with her costume in the film. For a while I was wondering what the Hell she was wearing until I realized its a modified version of the redesigned suit from the Dennis Hopeless/Hallum run.
Which I don't really like much cause it overuses the color black too, turning into one of those "realistic redesign" costumes.
I chalk up barely any controversy to Jess' race swap to the fact.....she's not that popular a character.
She's been mainly exclusive to the comics with the odd video game cameo. So unlike say Wally West who got who had a fanbase of kids that grew up with the DCAU no one would really care if she got a race swap in her film debut. No real nostalgia for her character.
Her biggest controversy was that one variant cover that drew her with a big booty that's been acknowledged in universe funny enough.

Terry Long was long term though.
