Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

It's just so oddly placed, I'm actually convinced those Lars theories about Peter and Paul may be true now, they both said the same thing to Rabin (get away from her) and they have the same fantasy (assuming the punches thrown from both weren't flash forwards or flashbacks)

I can't believe it took me longer than it should have to realize you were referring to Lars from Bender's Big Score.

...But can there still be enough wiggle room for that? Because Paul's moments of bossiness towards MJ still make me skeptical.

Actually, it just hit me. MJ has some kind of representative thing going on with Krakoa, right? Do they have a policy about doing the reincarnation thing for humans that are privy about superheroes? Because if Wells really does kill MJ, then there could be some wiggle room to bring back an MJ that isn't six years older than Peter after a while of grieving. Yeah, it would probably render Zeb Wells' run as 100% pointless, but then, when hasn't that happened?

In the meantime, anybody who's still salty about Paul, myself included, can treat themselves to a cathartic picture of Spider-Man punching him. evil grin

[up] Spoilers for Sins of Sinister and Immortal X-Men: Given that Sinister corrupted Hope, Xavier and the resurrection process, and Krakoa is still really nervous about this, I wouldn't be too optimistic. They have a big backlog, they're relying on other telepaths standing in for Xavier, and every single resurrection needs an extra set of checks to ensure the resurrectee's mind isn't holding a hidden copy of Sinister's personality. It's implied to be very, very slow - and they're still not sure it's truly safe. I mean, I'm not saying that Peter and MJ Sinister wouldn't make a lovely couple, but...

BTW, those 'Fallen Friend' one-shot variant covers lists Carmen Canero as one of the artists, and they do mostly Captain America work.

[up][up] Meh, it was a long shot anyway. sad

[up] Captain America getting killed off in ASM? I may be the kind to grasp for any kind of copium, but even I think that's a stretch.

But anyway, I think we stumbled upon a spot of hope!

Dan Slott has a bit of a habit of running his mouth a lot. The thing is, when he makes these kinds of posts that are particularly insisting on the idea that "no, ASM is doing fine! Nothing wrong here!", that's a pretty good hint that, no, things are actually not fine.

And it's not about whether ASM is selling at all but rather, it's about if it's selling enough. Like, is it filling the quota a high-priority book like Amazing Spider-Man is supposed to.

As for that selling angle? Apparently, one has expressed that the three nearest comic stores (which are miles apart from each other in different cities) have boxes of ASM 2022 and they can buy the whole run so far for less than $20. And when a brand-new run needs to be sold in bulk, that's not a great look, is it?

[up] #21 was Marvel's top-selling book that month and it's consistently in the monthly top 10 across all publishers throughout 2022. I doubt they're terribly worried about the commercials, even if some fans are unhappy.

[up] Yeah, plus why would Slott be insisting that a book that he's not even a part of is fine while he already has his own book to focus on?

The best I can think of is that he thinks of the current ASM team as good friends, but...

Plus Slott is part of Marvel. Is it really hard to understand why he would be invested in ASM doing good?

Besides, I do believe he's pretty friendly with most of the other writers there.

[up][up] Slott and Wells worked on the same book together for a few years as part of the Brand New Day team, Slott's been at the company for decades, he probably sees himself in a locker room leader type role

Plus basic empathy for other writers who are working on the same office as him.

Like the dude for all his flaws, has been pretty defensive of his co-workers. He releases those statements to show supprt.

He's been in Well's position before and it sucks to have your work rejected by people via low sales. I just think Slott is trying to be supportive to his co-workers here.

And to further fan the theories that a Captain America character is in trouble and that Fallen Friend is about them, Steve's ongoing is being cancelled, and Steve is one of the faces on the cover of ASM#26!

[up] I know, end of Civil War, just before One More Day. Kind of funny that, if he dies here a second time, it's in another event that serves to shatter Peter/MJ.

I wonder if it's synergy with the MCU? They've moved on from Steve and on to Sam.

...Man, that part about basic empathy and being defensive of his co-workers actually tracks. sad

But then, are they genuinely surprised about the rejection via (possible) low sales? The subject matter is literally "Peter and MJ are splitting up because we said so! And also MJ is at her very worst here! Hahahaha!" At least one of them had to know people would opt out from that alone, right?

Like this review points out, Wells could have easily build upon what Spencer set up about Peter and MJ's relationship being unbreakable, but he didn't. It's just "omg what did Peter do?" and when it came time to spill the beans, Peter did what anyone would have: he drove himself to the bone trying to get MJ back. (Yes, he burned bridges with the F4 and Captain America because he couldn't be bothered to explain why he was in a hurry, but that's more on Wells needing to have a "Peter vs. the world" conflict via giving Peter the Jerkass Ball, which is lame of Wells.)

And in his effort to make both Peter and MJ not the reason they broke up, all he did was make a huge mess of things.

It's just so frustrating. None of them deserve this. sad

And to further fan the theories that a Captain America character is in trouble and that Fallen Friend is about them, Steve's ongoing is being cancelled, and Steve is one of the faces on the cover of ASM#26!

...Wait.

The article says Steve's finale one-shot is coming in August. And why would he be dying in ASM of all places? It doesn't make any—

Hang on.

(*checks the "Fallen Friend" announcement that says "all will be revealed on May 31st," but the one-shot itself is coming July 12th, but ASM 26 is coming May 31st*)

Come to think of it, Steve was willing to help Peter, but Peter had to be a dumbass and slam Steve's shield on him.

...Would they really do that? Kill a known superhero in a different known superhero's book?

[up] Yeah, plus you and I blanked entirely on Uncanny Avengers, which Cap leads, although there's still wiggle room for possibly the protocalls resurrecting him and having them lead the team in secret while everyone else doesn't realise.

If it's not Cap, it's narrowing down to May or Robbie. I seriously doubt MJ's fate is anything other than a fake-out.

[up] If it's Aunt May, then that would force Peter to grow up, and that'd be a no-no for Marvel Editorial. Heck, they even begged Insomniac not to go through with it in the PS4 game.

(Actually, this will sound morbid, but I wouldn't mind if Aunt May did bite it. She's probably old enough to be 120 by now. Let her rest for cripes' sake!)

May isn't THAT old. She and Ben were teenagers when Richard was a baby IIRC. Still a big Sibling Age Gap to be sure, but if anything they were often drawn (especially in the Silver Age) as far older than they logically should be.

[up][up] Please don't give them ideas.

Though that one feels very mid-'00s, somehow. Like, that's the only time period I could imagine them trying it. Not just because they kinda did try it with that "Trouble" mini, but it just feels like the kind of thing that someone might've pitched back then. "What about a sexy young Aunt May?" "Brilliant!"

I just don't see it as something anyone would be interested in doing right now. Of course, these things tend to go in cycles, so we're only a few years away from it seeming like a cool idea to writers with weird ideas of what's cool.

So: Don't give them ideas.

A sexy young May was the form she chose to take when she acted as a spirit guide to Mayday during the April Parker saga of Spider-Girl, she reverted to her usual appearance at the end of the psychic mind duel with Norman to confirm her identity.

August solicitations have leaked

1. Amazing Spider-Man#32 appears to kick off 'Spider-Man's Last Hunt' and they're billing it as ASM's darkest ever story arc

2. Spider-Man#11 explores Peter's relationship with Spider-Boy further.

3. Miles vs Hobgoblin

4. That aside, LOADS of Symbiote content, including another Spidey 2099 book, but written by Peter David again!

5. What If...Dark explores what would happen if The Thing had found the symbiote during Secret Wars
