Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Not anything recent - reading back issues right now.

Spectacular Spider-man issue 40, the first run. The most recent attempt Peter made to cure Curt Conners of his periodic Lizard condition caused Peter to absorb some of the radiation and start acting more aggressive until he mutated into Spider-Lizard. This was uh... something I never knew about! Fun issue, though, Connors has to risk his life to cure Spider-man instead of the other way around.

Also, I guess this is the inspiration for Man-Spider in Spiderman TAS. Just like these comics, Connors notices an issue in Spider-man's blood that eventually leads to a mutation into a horrible monster. Though, aside from the surprise factor of Spider-Lizard, I definitely prefer Peter mutating into a spider monster rather than becoming another lizard. That just feels wrong!

Other things I've noticed so far on this read... in the pages of marvel team up, Spider-man briefly teams up with Shroud - sort of, not really. Spidey was tricked by one of Shroud's enemies to go after Shroud, he overcomes Shroud's powers and KO's him, then brings the Shroud to said villain... and the real Shroud busts in, saying that it was a decoy, leaving Spidey and Shroud to team up, and then fight again, and then team up again. But uh, there's absolutely no indication of when Shroud was able to switch in a decoy so that's super weird.

But then at the end... Shroud reveals himself to Peter Parker, knowing he's Spider-man thanks to his special senses! He reveals to Peter... that he's actually blind!!!

wow what a fucking twist, never seen a blind superhero with special senses that interacted with spidey and peter before

After that is an equally convoluted plot where Nick Fury impersonates a life model decoy of Nick Fury in order to make a secret plan with Spider-man directly in front of the villain they're making their secret plan for and then Spider-man goes and fight Mockingbird to trick the villain instead of just working with Mockingbird to expose the villain FOR NO REASON

Interestingly, ASM annual 13 is the first issue to establish Doc Ock as having a mental connection with his arms and feeling them like they're a part of his body. I hadn't been paying attention but it surprises me that was established so long after his introduction. Also this issue contains another case of Doc Ock laying an obvious trap and Spidey falling for it despite his Spider Sense - which is weird that it's happening nearly whenever Doc Ock appears. Even more annoying, the very first time Ock tried this Spidey *didn't* fall for the trap and it was a more elaborate trap then any of the ones he's tried since that did work. Bleh.

Also Ock has another fake out death here, despite his last one being fairly recent in terms of appearances.

edit: Oh, I just thought of another dumb thing with Hawkeye that I didn't immediately notice because his bow-rope swinging was so dumb

So he gets knocked out of a building falling to his death, and he can't shoot a bow-rope to stop his fall because he doesn't have his bow. Gee, that bow-rope sure was a great idea. He comes up with an alternative - his flare arrows have a weak rocket in them, which is just enough to... reverse the momentum of his fall, and carry his entire bodyweight up to the building he was thrown out of. Damn, I thought he was going to use the rocket to propel his bow-rope without his bow. This is somehow dumber.

But the part I hadn't noticed - which really crowns it all - is that the last time Hawkeye and Spidey teamed up - in this very series! - Hawkeye already had reverse-rocket arrows (the rocket fires in the opposite direction of where you'd want the arrow to go, which he had used along with a parachute arrow to stop a similar fall. Those arrows are probably even dumber than the current issue, but damn, the fact that they had to come up with a new way for him to prevent a fall and it's still really dumb is saying something.

Kaine's the luckiest guy right now. Nobody's using him, and with what they're doing...would you want them to?

Ironically, before his own mini-series, Kaine's biggest plan was to take his literal sack of money and go chill in Mexico. But his own good nature meant he had to adopt a small child/reincarnation of a deity and become Houston's Scarlet Spider for a while.

How ironic, after he stopped wanting to be left alone and go relax, he...was left alone by Marvel, and allowed to relax. From one of Peter's many troubled clones, to one of his most stable and successful family members.

I'm just saying, if Peter manages to save Ben from being Chasm and wants to take a month off, I don't think Kaine would say no. OK, he would say no, but he'd relent after like two more asks.

A great moment for Peter (I've said before that he's made a hero career out of fighting entire teams of superhuman, whether heroes or villains and also that he's the quintiessential mid-carder of the MU), but not so great for Marvel's Merry Mutants.

....and since he's the only one who had his memory erased, I bet some of them still remember this and are a bit bitter.[lol]

No wonder they all hated him when he started teaching at the school.cool

The final issue of All-Out Avengers has Spidey doing pretty well against them, too. One of those "one side is slightly brainwashed, and each side thinks it's the other" moments.

Spider-Man is pretty sure it's not him, but he's also sneaky enough to booby-trap the device they're fighting over, just in case he was wrong and was actually delivering it to a bad guy. Because, well, he's been doing this a while now. It's a great Peter moment.

Oh, when he beat up the entire X-Men during Secret Wars and they erased his memory of it.

Since all these long buried secrets came out during Original Sin, I joked that Peter got the memory of that back but didn't make a big deal of it

Hilariously I just got into an argument with a Storm fan over that page

The argument they used was basically Storm is an untouchable invincible God to Thor and Silver Surfer levels and should instantly squash Spidey

Also Prof. X mind-wiping him the next page apparently erases the fact that he was kicking everyone's asses just fine until the telepath sneak attacked him

I saw comments to that effect on the page.

Yeah, Storm is extremely powerful in terms of what she can do, but she also has the durability and speed of a normal human. She could very easily kill Spidey, and he can very easily kill her. All comes down to who gets to it first. Her being in close quarters with her own allies like she says is a reasonable explanation to me for why she can't immediately turn the tables on him.

As for X, I think the context makes it clear that Spidey already took out Chuck before this and X makes it clear it's luckily that Spidey didn't do a more serious blow on him. X can take out Spidey any time with his mind, but Spidey can similarly just KO the guy before that happens - it's another "quick draw" match-up.

The real iffy thing on that page is Rogue being restrained by the web. With Danvers' powers she should be able to break out quite easily.

I saw someone on the reddit page saying he'd struggle to beat most x-men one-on-one which seems... completely laughable. Most of the X-men aren't very impressive individually, unless they're telepaths or Storm.

Well, some of them are a lot stronger now than they used to be too.

I'm pretty sure Colossus held his own against World Breaker Hulk for a few short seconds.

He's probably forth strongest big guy after the Thing, and wherever Hulk and Thor stand against each other.

[up][up] One of the more laughable cases was downplaying the feats of Spidey having to deal with the Sinister Six despite the fact it shows Spidey has experience fighting multiple people at once and is used to having to defend himself from all sides.

While the X-Men are a collective most of whom rarely fight alone or have to unlike Spider-Man.

Logically while groups are Peter’s weakness because multiple attack angles threaten to overwhelm his spider sense, he also excels facing because when you wade into the middle of a team you can bounce from one opponent to the next while they have to pull their punches to avoid smacking an ally
