Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

IIRC, they ended up standing on the wrong side in Outlawed. And their supposed next book was kind of booed out and quietly buried by COVID.

And before that, they appeared as fodder in the Sin Eater arc in Spencer's Spider-Man.

Ignominious.

Marvel kind of has a Pikachu situation going on with Spider-Man. A lot of attempts to recapture the lightning in the bottle that fall flat. And its the one they don't expect to be super popular that is

Who is the one that ended up being super popular?

The most recent attempted relaunch was killed by bad press after some details came out that made it sound like an alt-right dog whistle, including characters named "Snowflake" and "Safespace."

I have no idea if it actually was or not.

If I recall correctly it was meant to be pro-LGBTQ and an attempt to "reclaim" those terms... but it just came off as unbearably cringe even to those it was supposed to represent.

As I recall the writer headlining the direction is a straight white guy and a comedy writer famous for parodic works at that

So it explains the names

[up] As it turns out the whole reclaiming thing is just nonsense as no one would ever care about reclaiming those words

Should have just went with actual cool names

[up][up]It really does sound like mockery than a sincere attempt at reclaiming those terms.

Did it even launch?

Yeah. COVID and the bad press just gave them a reason to not try.

So the Warriors only ended up showing up in the Outlaws crossover and looked more like stooges for the villains than anything since they never got to tell their side of things.

Yeah, its not been great for her the last couple years.

A change from the original writer did a number on her and then she was used for a lot of event and team fodder without a strong solo book. Now, ironically, she's a Spider-Man supporting character.

I was actually introduced to her back in 2014 when I was still following Amazing Spider-Man a bit after Superior.

So this is weirdly fitting.

The Ahmed run really put Kamala in a bit of a slump

Doesn't help that his entire run was just to build up a bad knock-off of Venom for Kamala

So, I felt the hankering to continue my Spider-man read through, and tried to pick up where I left off... turns out that was January 2022! I'm not doing so hot on catching up, here.

Getting back into it, the first issue I read is a Marvel Team Up issue with Hawkeye. At the start of the issue, he makes an offhand comment on how the Government kicked him out of the Avengers leaving him out of the job... and that just sounds hilarious to learn without any context (they don't even provide an issue reference like they usually do in crossovers).

Also apparently Hawkeye web-swings by firing arrows on rope to wrap around things and then swinging off them. That's super dumb.

Also Spidey is apparently in trouble with the cops again. Fuck, I really need not to take such large breaks, I can't remember what it is this time. Luckily I also asked this question last year when it came up in AMS 180 (which means he's still wanted by the cops 20 issues later, jeez) and the answer was George Stacy... wait no. Fuck, no that got resolved in ASM 186, this issue is set after 200... what the fuck, what is it this time?!

It's not really a dork age, its just funny.

Henry Peter Gyrich had become the Avengers new government liaison and he was already pretty fed up with them and vice versa. Hawkeye returned from being away from the team for a while and saw this unfamiliar man in the mansion so logically captured him as an intruder.

Last straw as far as Henry Peter Gyrich is concerned. Bam, he suspends all the Avengers' special perks and permissions.

After a while, he agrees to restore said privileges and perks if they make certain changes that the government wants to see. This included following federal diversity requirements so Gyrich specifically demanded that Hawkeye be kicked off the team and replaced with the Falcon. Which neither of them were happy about.

So, yeah, Hawkeye spends a good deal of time complaining to anyone who will listen about being fired from the Avengers. Because his only marketable skill is superhero stuff. He eventually gets a job as security chief of Cross Technologies, basically by breaking into the business to prove himself. Same way he initially got hired by the Avengers, actually. But Cross Technologies wound up being secretly evil so he lost that job. Just in time for a West Coast team to be created and Hawkeye to be put in charge of it so it all worked out pretty well for him.

Its just funny that he was so angry for so long about losing his job despite it kinda being his fault.

Okay I'm starting to think these current issues of Marvel Team Up are out of whack with the main comic lines.

The Hawkeye issue is from April 1980, while Spider-man is cleared in ASM 186, published Nov 1978. But Hawkeye is in his "I got booted from the avengers" phase, which begins in the Avengers 181 (July 1979) so that... doesn't... fit. Gragh!

The next issue has Peter talk about meeting Spider-woman like it just recently happened, which was issue #20 of spider-woman, released in August 1979 - and also brings up issue 19 of spider-woman as something very recently for Werewolf by night - that does make me feel like there is some kind of delay on the Marvel Team up comics, as the two issues are a month apart, and reference two earlier events within the marvel universe that are also a month apart as if they were recent.

But it's still not enough to explain Spider-man being wanted aahhhhhhh I guess that's just a mistake

[up][up][up] Cross technologies is who he's working for in this team-up issue!

edit: Oh, yeah, I missed something really obvious - Marvel team up 93, which references Spider-woman 20, is set in Los Angeles - where Peter was visiting in Spider-woman 20 on a trip for the Daily Globe. So it's set back then! ...and this is also after AMS 186 fuuuuuuck

edit 2: Okay, so Fantastic Four 207 has the army say Spider-man is still a wanted man... in March 1979. Either that's also a goof, or something happened to make Spider-man a wanted man against after issue 186 of ASM. And I've read the issues up to 200, there's nothing in those about him becoming a wanted man - *except* for Jameson accusing him of John Jameson's murder in ASM 190. The pages of ASM make it sound like the police aren't taking this seriously, but if that's what is being referred to... wow, lmao. He gets wanted for the murder of Captain Stacy in ASM 90 and takes 96 issues to be cleared of that... with the event being a big enough deal to be hyped up on the cover of the issue... and then he's accused of murder by Jameson four issues later.[lol]

Yeah. Spiderman TAS Scorpion was a pretty good Scorpion but that's because he was pretty close to his classic self.

It's actually been a while since we've seen his proper origin or his hatred of Jameson in animation. As pointed out, the last few Spidey series either never used him, never got to him, or changed him completely.

This might be a result of adaptations downplaying or outright removing Jameson's involvement in creating super villains. Spider-Man TAS is the last adaptation to explicitly show the Scorpion as a creation of Jameson and even in that show, the funding of the Spider-Slayers is attributed to Norman Osborn.
