Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up] Fair, been trying to get a copy actually.

[up][up] OG Clone Saga has aged quite well and it's always amazing to see Marvel Editorial miss the point of that story.

Reps are hard to shake off even decades later it seems

[up] They did recently just release an omnibus of the Cates run, the whole series including the Absolute Carnage and King in Black events, alongside several of the Web of Venom one-shots

I don't think keeping Spider-Ben around was necessary to keep change in the book. Really, keeping Spider-Ben would feel like the opposite, because you're writing out the married/father Peter for one that's hip, young and single.

Not every status quo change needs to be a permanent one - the issue

If Ben had still died and Peter was brought back but they didn't kill off his kid (and later break him up with MJ) I think he'd be just fine.

Writing out Baby May + bringing back Aunt May was the twofer that really damaged that, however. But OMD is a step significantly further IMO.

Marvel Editorial's obsession with Aunt May being a part of Spider-Man's life will never stop being baffling to me.

[up][up] Yeah, that's the one I'm trying to get, my local store will get it soon.

The irony is that the Clone Saga 2 was supposed to get the spider books out of the ditch they’d been driven into in the years preceding it.

Where so much shit had been dumped on Peter that he’d basically become grim and depressed

And then the Clone Saga dumped more shit on him and it had to end in a time skip past him coping with losing a child

I'm still vaguely amused/horrified by how Marvel handled Spider-Man losing his child.

Like just act like it never happened AND drop some vague hints that the child is alive, just kidnapped by Norman or something.

The Norman Osborn Gold Goblin mini actually references the baby as one of the many many people who Norman has hurt over the years.

[up] That was Quesada's headcanon, and he's not there anymore. Recent Marvel books set in the past are OK with referencing both the marriage and the pregnancy again, as evident by the Ben Reilly and Lost Hunt mini-series.

Spider-Verse#29 (Marvel Infinity)

Benjy pulls off an impressive feat lifting a giant mallet and punching his way through it. R. Cade gets away at the end, letting Mayday and Benjy go after they escape his death traps as they've given him enough data regarding their skills levels to enhance his V.I.P project. Jason is out of a job but asks Mayday if they can hang out, Mayday decides not to tell him his uncle is a villain.

Peter and MJ return home, and snuggle up together while checking on their kids, Mayday contacts the Lady Hawks and tells them about R.Cade. The end? Or the beginning? Mayday hopefully will be back

[up] It was just a small bonus story about Peter on the phone to Aunt May then talking to Cap. It wasn't a big deal and required minimal effort

Mary Jane/Black Cat#1

Checking in on MJ while the events of Dark Web unfold, Felicia finds that she, Paul and the kids are under attack from demon furniture. MJ has powers, which work like a jackpot slot machine, and she has no control over which abilities she recieves. Felicia calls in a favour from Tony to protect Paul and the kids using drones. Felicia asks about the powers but MJ is cagey about them, Paul and the kids know, but Peter doesn't and she won't tell Felicia why. MJ of course still loves Peter so she tells Felicia to look after him. MJ again tries her powers out, and ends up taking the form of mucus pudding, the two are then dragged into limbo by Count Belsaco.

A short back-up story is a shaggy dog tale about Felicia stealing a replica of Doom's mask for use in a poker game. Felicia's poker pals include Ben Grimm and MJ

Yeah, this is not a good look for MJ.

Keeping secrets from Peter is something the old MJ used to do out of fear she couldn't cope with his secret, when they were married, she was pretty pissed off he would still hide things from her on occasion. Even in the context of post-OMD history, she was adamant they should their lives married or not. Keeping Peter in the dark about her powers, powers she can't control, does more to endanger Paul and the kids than she realizes. This is making her look more like an unfit mother. Peter could at least use his science know-how to perfect the technology if he's at all familiar with it, not unless it can kill him or something

And speaking of Paul, god what a useless chickens*it.

Is it bad that I understood the reference? [lol]

When Norman was a kid, he actually killed his pet dog because his family was poor at the time, and he considered the dog another mouth to feed.

Just counting the days till Mephisto makes a deal to bring back the usual Norman.

Man it was weird seeing Norman unironically call Mary Jane, M.J.

Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt#2

Mary Jane tries to help Peter cope with his breakdowns, urging him not to take foolish risks on the rooftops as he has no powers. As they clean up the house, MJ suggests Peter call Doctor Kafka, Peter again goes under mental attack from Gregor and he snaps at Mary Jane. Later, the Parkers visit Peter's new friend Tracy Makeba, who he met at Portland Pacific. They have dinner but Peter has another psychotic incident, seeing his enemies all around them, Tracy calms him down with just one touch of her hand, which annoys MJ as she has so much difficulty in reaching Peter.

The next day Peter skips out on his classes and wanders the streets, Gregor abducts him,. with Marty Jane able to somehow 'sense' that Peter is in trouble while she sits at home waiting for him, Gregor takes Peter to a warehouse where he tears into him, Gregor mocks Peter and dares him to put up a fight, Peter tries but he has none of his spider-strength so can't defend himself, Peter's thoughts are of Mary Jane as Gregor attempts to shoot him, but someone prevents him...a woman that Gregor identifies as his mother!

New interview with Wells about the big March reveal

He says he originally wanted to reveal all of this in issue six, but kept coming up with other stories.

Interesting, Marvel asks Wells what makes Felicia a 'better fit' for the purposes of the story, not the long-term, and she isn't featured in the sneak peaks at all or the covers. She's an afterthought.

So Gold Goblin is interesting. Norman gets haunted by the ghosts of people he's killed. I get his dead dog, I get Terri Kidder, and I kind of get Phil even if he was a crime lord decapitation people by the end, but why Andreas von Strucker? He's not an innocent soul in any way.

[up] He was briefly heading in a more positive direction in Thunderbolts, after Andrea died. The combination of Norman's manipulation and malicious telepaths put a stop to that, though. More to the point, Krakoa brought him back, although Norman seems unaware of that.

Remember when James Cameron was going to make a Spider-Man movie? Well, here's an article on an... interesting sex scene that would have been featured in said movie.

    Excerpt
It opens with the Spider-Man (not Peter Parker for reasons not divulged) and Mary Jane on a rooftop. Already MJ is feeling swoony. She has to stand against a girder to “feel something solid” as she takes in Spider-Man, “a perfectly formed male silhouette with a soothing low voice.”...

Then Spider-Man starts the seduction with the words that would make anyone weak in the knees:

“Courtship among the spiders is highly ritualized. It varies from species to species. The male spider may circle the female, or wave his front legs…to signal that he is not prey.”...

Then he “moves in a hypnotic arc around her” as he “raises his hands in a dance-like movement.” He’s showing Mary Jane that he isn’t prey so they can start their own courtship. (I guess because they are really spiders and not humans?)...

Creepily, Spider-Man tells her he can see her interest by showing “an uncharacteristic passivity.” MJ is feeling all kinds of things so Spidey keeps going by detailing how some male crab spiders symbolically tie up the legs of the female before mating. He shoots his webs over her wrists like a sticky, disgusting version of a bondage rope. Listen, I don’t kink shame and can appreciate some BDSM themes in a mainstream movie, but this is a hard pass.

I think because he is ashamed of himself (or possibly trying to hide his identity), Spider-Man wants MJ to close her eyes while he takes off his mask so their mouths can “slowly and very sensuously devour each other.” Even though she can’t look at him while intimate, Mary Jane feels he is “mesmerizing, gentle, powerful.” End scene, probably with an artistic fade of the city below.

James Cameron has a reputation of writing his fetishes in his movies lately, but uhh this is a whole new level.
