Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

There is just something inherently stupid about social media plots that makes them impossible to take seriously.

Pretty much any series I see that interjects social media to some degree always has said use of social media as it’s most consistent critique.

Because Roxxon manipulating a social media to sway public opinion isn’t a big enough draw on its own Roxxon also created teen beating robots, robots for beating up teenagers

That’s how it’s going. Since I’m reading on unlimited I don’t yet know how it went

The last arc of the Cotes Captain America book had a social media theme. Red Skull became an alt right youtuber

The thing is that there are actual real evil social media uses. It’s just not very superheroic unless you throw in evil robots or something.

Wait what?

How does creating robots to beat up teens equal profit?

EDIT: Does the Red Skull bitch about Disney Star Wars?

[up][up] It ties back to the Outlawed thing

The law is still on the books and Roxxon is trying to get the public to stop giving a crap about it while also convincing the government to vote to uphold it.

Then they get to sell basically teen hero seeking sentinels to the government to beat up teenagers

The bonus aside from selling teen beating robots to the government is that fewer teen heroes will hassle them about global warming

It was a while back but this whole thing started when Roxxon tried to kill an activist speaking at Kamala’s school with a dragon and then successfully blamed the Champions for the damage what happened

And Red Skull probably had videos on Star Wars considering he was aiming for the disenfranchised feeling male demographic who thought men had stopped being Real Men tm because women have rights or whatever

This is kind of the issue with doing “real problems” storylines.

Like the United States Cap series had one of its self-proclaimed Captain America’s sorta deride Steve because she’s solving problems like poisoned water supplies instead of his “Zemo’s” and shit.

Which yeah sure she’s delving into the “actual problems”, the thing is the main villain of said issues is basically just some corporate government fuck. It just does not necessarily make for an entertaining story like Zemo trapping Captain America in another dimension or hiring Natroc the Leaper to engage him in a martial arts battle.

It’s nice of anybody to ever deride the Avengers for not dealing with Real Problems when they’re constantly busy stopping the world from blowing up

Would it be nice if Steve’s weeks weren’t always packed with mummy apocalypses and Maelstrom trying to eat the Earth’s go fast or Kree invasions or someone turning Man-Thing into a humanity seeking missile or Kang deploying kaiju from the future or Skrull invasions or Thanos or the Grandmaster plucking Earth from its orbit to have a cool game board?

Yes. And would he get more grounded work down if that were the case? Guy’s a workaholic, he’d definitely find things to do. Is it important for the world to literally keep turning? Also yes.

I for the life of me cannot understand why they keep bringing attention to it. They could easily just say Steve helps out the little guy in between the big stuff, it’s not that hard.

And plus it winds up making the character calling out Steve kind of an ass. For full context she was framed and arrested for a crime, Steve broke her out, they get attacked by the shield thievex with Cap telling her they intend to kill all the civilian Captain America’s and she might need to come with them.

Her response? Quite literally I don’t care. She does not care one iota that a super-powered assassin is possibly after her because she’s too worried about the “real problems”. She comes across as kind of an ungrateful prick. She weirdly comes across like she doesn’t even like Captain America despite bearing his name, shield, and colors.

The Silk social media story might be screwed over by the sliding timescale eventually, but that won't be for years, and the whole "being trapped in a bunker" thing makes it very easy to explain why she wouldn't be good at it then too.

Yeah even with the sliding timescale social media has exploded in the last 10 years or so. And she might not have been that big into it when it was relatively small

[up][up][up][up] There are a lot of comics where characters seem vaguely aware that aliens and supersoldiers and Norse gods and the like aren't really real, and don't treat them as seriously as stuff that exists in Real Life.

Wow, this conversation made me realize just WHY “focus on the real problems” stories in fantasy settings (like Marvel) often come off as so hokey - because the distinction only matters to the real-world audience, not the characters in the story, to whom logically alien invasions and warring gods and insane cosmic beings would be seen as just as “real” as poverty and terrorism and such. How have I not noticed that before!?

Its weird right?

I mean world-ending threats, horrifying supervillains, and yet people don't even treat them like they are a big deal.

Like again that tone that Cap used to describe Zemo when talking to Steve, the clear implication is "You go take of your little stuff while I focus on the stuff that actually matters."

Uh you do know Zemo and his ilk once took over America and tried to institute a fascist state right? You want that to happen again?

I guess making modern villains for the new generation to fight based on those concepts like old villain are might end up being a bit silly, even if some of the people in that field are quite comic book villain like.

The issue is that in real life people are less likable, interesting, or even intelligent than fictional characters.

Lex Luthor the proverbial corrupt CEO guy, is far more intelligent and dignified than his actual real life variants cause otherwise we'd never take him seriously on a narrative level.

Not just patterned

In her first appearance she just wore one of Ben’s old suits with zero time for any adjustments

And it’s skin tight on either of them
