Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Are they the same ones that tortured Monica Rambeau by putting her in Nextwave?

Watch it turn out that Beyond is a front for Mephisto and after the 19 issues, he gets dealt with once and for all. (Assuming we'll still have Peter by the time we actually get there.

You know that incorrect quote about the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? tongue

Huh so Beyond is a place-holder until the next major run.

Also i kind of hate to say it but outside of Harry being dead, this first issue of Beyond almost feels like you can hop from Slott's run over to this. Because Ben becoming Spider-Man is consequence of the fallout from Slott's run, not Spencer's. lol

[up] Hell, since Slott ended his run with Flash's death, you could just, literally, re-edit the comic and insert the name FLASH instead of HARRY.

Of course, Flash is back now so that kind of kills that suggestion dead

Resurection in king in black right?

I don't think anyone thought he would perma die. He's far too popular for that.

In King in Black through symbiote shenanigans IIRC.

At the end of King in Black.

Flash's conscience was in the symbiote hive mind and he managed to take control of a symbiote dragon to resurrect his body.

Hah.

So, I guess Spencer is on the ever growing list of writers who've burnt all bridges with the fans and will never be trusted to put out something good ever again?

In hindsight, it might have been a mistake to not be straight that they would never retcon OMD.

Sure, we got rid of Sins Past, but that bait and switch still enraged people it would seem.

Shame because his Spidey run was great.

When it wasn't dealing with Kindred and Mephisto.

Even the Sins Past isn't much of a net positive since it's low fruit, the story of the retcon is nonsense, and Spider-Man's lore got even more violently fisted by Mephisto.

Seriously, the Osborns are pawns of Satan. That's just a bit on the nose.

It's funny how quickly opinion turned on Spencer. When the arc started, people thought he was a breath of fresh air compared to Slott.

In fairness, Slott had been on the book in some form or another for a decade at that point, so anyone would have seemed like a breath of fresh air.

[up][up]It was, until he failed the landing.

Look how Game of thrones went from being one of the most celebrated pieces of TV to barely being mentioned outside of ridicule after season 8.

Public opinion is a fickle thing.

Still, I think Spencer's run is better than Slott in total.

I was pleased with the whole of Spencer's run to be honest, I did'nt mind the ending at all, and it's the first time a whole Spidey era has ended on a positive note since 1999's "The Final Chapter", with no Downer Ending for Peter and MJ.

People are mad now, but in time they'll calm down and the run will age very well.

I can't wait to see people unironically argue that adding in Mephisto to Spider-Man's lore as an integral part is good writing and fits with Spider-Man's themes.

I mean from what I hear this is among the most convoluted nonsensical retcons there is.

Its as potentially infamous as the whole Secret Empire.

Chances are it will just be a bad reminder exactly like Sins Past was.

I feel Spencer's run only seemed good in comparison to Slott's, and the farther we get away from Slott's run, the less that means anything.

Don't know, but I promise I wasn't trying to criticize any posters. I was trying to make light of how the attack that put Peter out of commission was evidently orchestrated by the Beyond Corporation. I am sorry if it sounded like I was criticizing any posters.

Remember, too, that Slott was seen at first as a breath of fresh air after JMS and the BBD era, and JMS was in turn seen as one after Spidey got beaten very bad with the NINETEEZ EXTREEM stick. [lol]

I thought JMS run is still held up as one of the best. Which was helped by these two later runs.

A lot of people hated that it introduced a mystical origin for Spidey’s powers. And, of course, Sins Past and OMD.
