Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

That was basically a bit of tom holland playing along with the fans who decided that Iron Man 2 in queens meant any kid in that movie could be Peter. Officially they can't say it because that would involve paying Sony extra money for a spider-man appearance in an MCU movie. Story wise it would be stupid because it feels like something Peter would have brought up with Stark at once.

What about that ride back? It was implied that they talked for a bit but we only see the tail end of that.

Either case it's take it or leave it and not definite canon.

You know Endgame has a cool bit that visualises off screen moments from a familiar situation

MCU Peter is in sort of an morton's fork here, either you mention Uncle Ben and annoy people with repetition as Windleopard mentions, or you lose a core part of Spider-Man's motivations in favor of making him Iron Boy as Jack mentions. My personal suggestion would be to have Tobey Maguire play Uncle Ben so people will be too busy cheering from nostalgia to complain about repetition, besides it's less about Uncle Ben and more about Spider-Man's core philosophy of responsibility, not about proving himself to Mr. Stark.

I was fine with skipping over Ben's death but it feels like they went the extra mile and skipped over what it meant for Peter in favor of a generic "I want to be a hero" story.

MCU spider-man feels less like a character than a visual render of the target demographic. As I said there is a middle ground between too much mentioned and not mentioned. Especially when you factor in that the Garfield movies despite featuring Ben downplayed him in favor of Richard Parker and George Stacy.

I think having Tobey as Uncle Ben would be cheesy. Likewise he is younger than Marisa Tomei. Someone suggested online that the MCU get Joe Pesci as a homage to My cousin Vinny the movie that Tomei a star.

Disney has some really good aging tech, so Tobey Maguire could look older than Marisa Tomei. Besides, the Sam Raimi movies are still beloved enough that they could get away with it, plus Cheese is something associated with the Sam Raimi movies.

MCU is not that cheesy and even Raimi wasn't.

Still young Uncle Ben is hard because you need an actor who embodies a Chris reeve sincerity. I would have said Tom Hanks at one point but after seeing The Post I will say Hanks should be Jameson.

There's a really beautiful Spider-Man and MJ moment in a non-canon Silver Surfer miniseries, Requiem, where the Surfer discovers he's dying and there's nothing anyone can do, so he has to wrap things up before the end. In issue 2 he runs into Spider-Man, and helps him stop a giant robot mech that interrupted him buying earrings for Mary Jane's birthday. Peter realizes the Surfer is dying, and they talk about how one would go about solving the world's problems—it's easy to stop bad guys but it's so hard to get people to change for the better.

Spider-man thinks about and discards several ideas, like forcibly overthrowing oppressive governments, giving everyone galactic riches, or stranding all the world's leaders on an island, but then he asks the Surfer a question—why the surfboard? When he talks about how freeing it is to let him see everything with no ship or craft in the way, the Surfer offers to share the power cosmic with him so he can experience that freedom too—but Peter declines, and says he can show someone else.

So for her birthday, Mary Jane traverses the cosmos for about an hour, and when she returns she talks about how free it made her feel. This gives Peter an idea, and he asks the Surfer that if people won't change, maybe he could show them an impetus to change themselves—to see the world's beauty and how it could be with the power cosmic. And for five minutes, the Surfer makes every person on Earth feel that same freedom and peace.

I love that comic and series. I even made it the pagequote for Silver Surfer since it defines Surfer so well:

Spider-Man: Why the surfboard? I mean, don't you think it's kind of, I dunno...hokey?
Silver Surfer: It is not a surfboard. It is—There is a human phrase that covers it. "Form follows function." I need no air, no food, no water. I do not need a ship to sustain me. I need only something that will carry me where I must go.
Silver Surfer: Requiem, Issue #2, written by J. Michael Straczynski

And yeah it's one of the all-time great Peter and MJ moments, though I do question the artist putting a headband on MJ. That's a Gwen accessory but otherwise amazing. JMS on twitter said it's one of his all-time favorite bits. He really is a Peter/MJ shipper.

So Marvel put up a "top 4 times Mephisto earned his reputation" article, OMD is right at the top, acknowledging the deal created a "different world" and that Peter will have a hellish fury if he were to one day regain his memories.

I wonder if all this Mephisto set up is a OMD resolution? I mean Joe Q. did allegedly suggest bringing back Peter and MJ as a couple? My paranoid brain is thinking they’ll bring back the marriage but write it so badly people will flock away from it.

That's interesting. If it is foreshadowing I wonder how such a story would play out, especially what might trigger the memories.

Mephisto didn't even get satisfaction from OMD. He screwed up big time because he didn't do the number one rule of demons in Faustian bargains: screwing over the hero. Peter's life actually went better post-OMD with Parker Industries.

Parker Industries was Doc Ock and he was possessed for a good chunk of it so I wouldn't say that.

Mind you, wasn't it MJ who actually made the deal?

Peter had to say "Nyaagh...do it" in OMD for the deal to go through.
