Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Not very high given how large Peter's rogues gallery is and rarely new villains catch on.

As I understand it, only Mr. Negative has managed to stick around of the newer villains, and that was back in around 2005/2006 wasn't it?

...is Negative still around? I only know about him due to his appearances in both Ultimate Spiderman and Spider-Man (PS4), but I assumed he's gained some traction.

He moved to Hong Kong a little while ago, but is set reappear in an upcoming Cloak and Dagger series.

Overdrive, Screwball and the new Beetle have also stuck around.

So, as I watched the third season of Daredevil, I think on how there's apparently been a bit of a Rogues Gallery overlap between Matt and Pete.

I'm wondering two things:

What Daredevil Villains has Spidey fought, and has Bullseye ever been one of them?

The Thieves Guild aren't really new villains, though — they are just new to Spider-Man. I believe Gambit used to be a member and then lead them for a while.

[up] You mean ones that started as Daredevil villains and then fought Spider-Man? Because usually it's the other way around. I guess the Jester and Stilt-Man are probably it.

[up][up] Peter Parker: Spider-Man #6 and "American Son" are the most significant Bullseye vs. Spider-Man stories that I can currently think of.

[up][up]

Yeah, I guess so. I figure there's got to be a few. Peter and Matt are probably the only heroes who more or less have joint custody of a few bad guys.

Well, quite a few heroes share bad guys with Peter, since his Rogues seem to be the ones most likely to branch out. Sandman with the FF. Fisk with DD. Rhino with Hulk, etc.

[up] How Poindexter BULLSEYE fair?

Actually, How did Pete fair? While he's clobber Bullseye if he got close, even with his Spider-Sense, Bullseye's uncanny aim likely caught him off guard quite bit.

In the first story, he was sent by Fisk to take out Arthur Stacy and Senator Ward, but Spidey interrupted. He wasn't prepared for that, and ended up bailing (though not without detonating the explosives that he had planted on the rooftop where Ward and Stacy were) after putting up a half-hearted fight (despite that, Spidey notes that the nuts and bolts that Bullseye had started throwing at him hurt even through the web shield that he had spun).

The second one was a Dark Avengers story. Bullseye was the one who Norman left in charge of torturing a captive Spidey, whose mask couldn't be removed because it was a special unstable molecules one given to him by the Fantastic Four. He eventually escaped and beat the crap out of Norman and Bullseye in a berserker rage after learning what Norman had in store for Harry. Norman got the upper hand eventually, but Pete was saved by Harry.

Looks like they also faced off "New Ways to Live".

Spider-Man got Bullseye to call himself a douche, so he absolutely won that encounter. Never mind any physical confrontation, that was the win, right there.

I do like that Bullseye appreciated the joke. Even at the time, he laughed and said it was funny. The man appreciates comedy. It's why he and Deadpool are such good frenemies, too.

Actually, the Deadpool/Bullseye arc during Dark Reign was the one good part of Way's Deadpool run. I love when Deadpool manages to avoid a rocket by rolling down the windows on the truck he's driving. And, of course, the arrow through Deadpool's head.

I like how Bullseye in that page even defends Spider-Man while all the other villains are raging on him.

For a demented serial killer the guy sure has a good sense of humor. tongue

[up] Also Bullseye admitted that the maneuver was awesome.

You know, I wonder when Spider-Man and Deadpool became friends. Or workplace acquaintances. Because Deadpool was mainly an X-Men character in the early '90s and I don't remember him having any crossovers with Spider-Man back then (I think Spidey was embroiled in his Clone Saga or something). And yet there's an entire Spider-Man/Deadpool book and I remember that they had been frenemies for quite a while now.

They had a showdown sometime in the mid 2000's post Brand New Day.

It turned into a Yo Momma competition and Deadpool was forced to drop it mere moments before he unleashed the ultimate Yo Momma joke on Spidey.

That might have been where it started. I think the solicits even pointed out that they were finally having a confrontation.

Is Spidey resistant to yo mama jokes as an orphan or more vulnerable to them?

He didn't seem that personally affronted by them, but he'll be damned if he lets himself be defeated on an insult showdown.

[up][up][up] I remember that — it was written by Joe Kelly. I didn't realize that was their first interaction — I thought they had interactions before. But yeah, it was hilarious.

They ran into each other once or twice in Cable & Deadpool and there was that one part of Kelly's Deadpool run where Wade went back to a Silver Age Spidey story.

So, do you think Pete would take challenges over his quip skills?

When they were fighting Hand Ninjas, he and Hawkeye got into quipping fight because Pete didn't like that the latter tried to horn in on his thing.

Note that Clint was in his Ronin persona at the time.

I remember that. Heck, it's on the Crowning Moment of Funny page:

Ronin: It's a Ninja Tea Party.
Spider-Man: Okay, so it's not just me. This is too many ninjas, right?
Ronin: They must be outsourcing.
Spider-Man: They must have a great benefits package.
Ronin: Dental. Medical.
Spider-Man: Free throwing stars.
Ronin: You can never have enough throwing stars.
Spider-Man: Oh, no. No, no.
Ronin: What?
Spider-Man: I'm not going to have to compete with you in the "Mid-Battle Witty Zinger" department, am I?
Ronin: Oh, you are.

Bendis was always great with the quips.

So if one wanted to get into modern Spidey where should i start? Is the new comic by Nick Spencer good?

alliterator Since: Jan, 2001

Yes. And it depends on whether or not you want to read a lot of back issues or just start fresh. (And yes, the current Marvel relaunch is called "A Fresh Start.") Honestly, Spencer's run is as good as anyplace, although I love J. Michael Straczynski's run (aside from the horrible ending). "Brand New Day" is a mixed bag — I loved Mark Waid's issues, but that was pretty much it. If you want to try a good crossover, I recommend "Spider-Island." If you want a book that's great and new, I recommend reading Chip Zdarsky's run on Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man.
