Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up] I'm actually surprised at the amount of people who seem to want the This Loser Is You aspect played up; in a poll at CBR for favorite job Peter's had, Horizon is winning, but there's a quite vocal minority who express the opinion that he's now too successful to be relatable, and want him back as a low-paid photographer. I disagree, to put it mildly.

His Horizon job is pretty cool. Opens a lot of story possibilities.

HAHAHA OH WOW. Seriously, "Number 1 Son Egg Drop Stoop?" Is that what Chinese names really sounded like to American in the '70s?

[up] Yeah, comics back then weren't really great at racial sensitivity. Aside from Chris Claremont, and maybe a couple others.

Of course, racial stereotypes still get played up in a lot of comics today.

Covers to #700. Rather amused at who the most prominent villain on the latter is. wink

Oh hey, Cardiac is on the cover. Haven't seen him in forever.

Is anyone else reading Spider-Men? I just read the issue where 616 Pete bonds with Ultimate Gwen and May (and Miles) and fuck I wasn't prepared for all these feels.

I've been reading New Avengers and I gotta agree. Bendis cool.

[up] I actually liked the dialogue in the Collective arc (which I'll admit I read mostly as an X-Men fan who wanted to see The Big Board of depowered people). I was surprised.

I usually like Bendis dialogues quite a lot. What make his run at the Avengers lack luster is the over all arcs and stories. Since he proved he can do those as well in Ultimate Spider Man, I assume his problem with the avengers is the pacing. He has a very Decompressed Comic style which doesn't really mix well with the Avengers, since they have to follow over all Marvel Universe pace*

. As such, his run seems to be constantly off beat. Sometimes it feel slow and some times it feels rushed. It just doesn't have a good balance.

His style works greatly with Ultimate Spider-Man because it is a relativelly free of ties comic*

. He can keep it slow all he wants, without being forced to rush it over as he is in the Avengers.

Bendis's Avengers run has also, to me, been too devoid of real character focus. He comes up with a lot of really cool, big ideas, which end up eclipsing the characters that should be at the heart of the story. He can do character writing, and he can do big ideas, he just doesn't seem to be able to handle both.

Compare it to Hickman's Fantastic Four and FF. He's done some epic stories on those books. Just these huge ideas. But he always kept Marvel's First Family as the heart and focus of it. It's always been about the characters dealing with the crazy stuff they're dealing. It feels at once vast and intimate.

Bendis never figured out how to do that. Once in a while, we'd get the occasional moment of insight into characters. But by and large, we'd just get quips and arguments.

[up]That is right. I guess he is not too good at writing teams either. I mean, he does develop Cage family nicely, but that is about it. The other characters keep stuck in the background most of time.

Furthermore, and this is my biggest complaint about Bendis, he's pretty much turned all the female Avengers into the same character. The girl who stands in the back and snarks at her teammates.

Rewatching The Spectacular Spider Man. Norman Osborn is totally Thomas Edison as a supervillain.

[up] I'm told there actually is a comic where Edison is a supervillain. He's working for Cthulhu or something, and Tesla and Mark Twain have to stop him.

I kind of want to watch Spectacular, but then again I don't because I know it goes unfinished.

[up][up]Ah, The Five Fists of Science. I read that. It's frakking awesome.

Edison is also a villain in Atomic Robo. And for good reason. That guy is totally a real life supervillain.

[up]And what's the problem with being cut short? It's still a really good series.

I wonder if they'd have killed Gwen had the series continued?

Also, here's something you might not know about me: I don't think Gwen's death is a great story. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's certainly a good one, but in my opinion the fact that it's basically the story that made it "okay" for supporting characters to be made expendable for cheap drama keeps it from becoming a great one. I'm told Alan Moore feels the same way about his own Watchmen for its part in kicking off THA NINETEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

I heard from Word of God that they don't intend to kill her off.

[up]Not to mention Gwen's death is directly responsible for the Clone Saga. *shudder*

I just hate how it keeps being repeated/homaged.

Homaged isn't a word, apparently.

" And what's the problem with being cut short? It's still a really good series."

If it's as good as people say it is I don't wanna deal with it ending prematurely. I've had enough Spider-Man related feels for right now.

On that note, you guys think we'll ever get an animated adaptation of the Ultimate Spider-Man comics? And maybe Pete won't die in this one? ;_;

There's an Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon but it doesn't really have much to do with the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. Also its terrible and I hate it.

@Hamburger,

It is no different from Watchman itself. Following writers didn't figure why the story was good in the first place and keep trying to repeat it to get a cheap success.
