Do the supposed benefits TT offers outweigh the drawbacks that come with them? We're leaving a dangerous avenue open here, and what does the site get in return?

@Ninja: I personally wouldn't mind those going, as that would save me from having to split the larger ones in the future. tongue

Spell Blade has it right, maybe keep some of the Tabletop stuff if that is really the best way to get tropes, but everything else is really just TV Tropes hosting an anonymous Livejournal, and it doesn't really contribute to the site or make it better in any way.

Well, just an idea: Cut the problem pages and clean up any bad entries, and see if the presently neutral/positive TT pages go bad. It's not like we can't delete the TT namespace later, whereas deleting everything now is permanent.

[up][up][up][up] Table Top Gaming examples. Examples from media that don't really fit the main page. School plays. Mundane slice of life. It really does mostly seem like the sexual pages that are the issue. Not all the pages.

I don't want people talking about pedophilia or necrophilia or weird kinks. I just want the gaming shit.

Do the supposed benefits TT offers outweigh the drawbacks that come with them? And how much policing would be required to keep them clean, even after we've zapped the bad ones?

I can't back this enough. What does TT add to the site, and is that important enough to justify what it takes away?

Look, we know that there are articles that are relatively free from problems that plague others. That doesn't make it an excuse to justify Troper Tales overall.

Well, I hate to break it to you, but there is no "big lie", there is no "system". The universe is indifferent.

Mad, its the new names that have made this opinion into a majority. The rest of us have posted here before, and match the status quo people almost down to exact numbers. It isn't a troll, raid, whatever.

Just have to ask though, what part of pointing out pedophiles bragging on Troper Tales is trolling? What part of people getting way too personal pity parties in Headphones Equals Isolation reflects this site as mature?

The drawbacks that come with some of them. There are troper tale pages that range from "Kinda neat" to "meh" to "aggravating" to "WTF?!" I think there is a clear case for the latter category to go, and I would support axing the third category as well.

I haven't seen evidence that would indicate the ones in the first two categories would get corrupted, especially if they've existed without problems for years.

But what's the percentage of good to bad? If it's 5% bad and 95% good to neutral, then what's the point? You seem to be focusing exclusively on the pages most likely to be bad and might not be seeing the full picture as a result.

Examples from media that don't really fit the main page.

Given There Is No Such Thing As Notability, what examples from media wouldn't really fit the main page? Are there any at all? Even the most inane fanfic fits the main page.

School plays. Mundane slice of life.

How do these add to the site now, and would they be harmed if we moved them offsite or into the forums? I realise moving them offsite isn't simple, but it's certainly not going to destroy the cohesiveness of the TV Tropes community as it stands.

It works the other way too. A few bad pages don't justify deleting all the pages.

Think of it this way - not all IJBM threads, hell, most IJBM threads weren't chock-full of drama, shitposting and flame-bait. Does that mean IJBM deserved to stay? It was deleted because the very idea of a board to complain on caused trouble, and right now the core purpose of Troper Tales is causing us trouble. This problem isn't going to be solved by wiping away a few pages.

Then why not just establish standards for posting in Troper Tales? Then at least it's more clear-cut on what to report.

Troper Tales pages existing does not need to be justified, as it is the status quo. No justification or lack thereof will change the fact that they currently exist.

What we need justification for is to enact change. There is clearly justification to remove certain bad articles. There has yet to be any solid justification to remove the Good and Neutral articles.

We do have a policy on Family Friendliness. Troper Tales should probably be adhering to that already.

[up][up][up][up] I'd be good with standards.

[up][up][up][up][up] Currently table top games don't get individual examples because they're just things that happened to some random troper and the only place is troper tales.

Can I put Porn Stash on the Cut List, if it's enough of a "problem page"?

There have been no reasons given to remove good or neutral pages as of yet.

Re: cutlisting TroperTales.Porn Stash, usually we bring them to Trope Repair Shop first to have a closer look, I think.

Here's the crux of the matter as I see it: The site, from my reckoning, is an informal collection of interesting information about various forms of entertainment with a healthy dose of opinions and discourse from various users. When discussions are reasonably focused on the works in question and how various tropes apply to them, everything is fine. Yeah, you'll get some vehement disagreements and more than a few overly verbose and borderline-creepy arguments, but that comes with the territory.

The problem with Troper Tales and, to an extent, many of the various subsections of trope pages is that people are talking about themselves. The people who peruse this site doesn't care about what tropers say about themselves because they've never met them, don't know them to any significant degree, and don't care. For the people who do care, well, that's what these very forums are for, no?

Observing and cataloging information on a piece of entertainment many people enjoy is one thing. Observing and cataloging information about yourself that no one asked for is another. I don't know what the solution is, but the current arrangement isn't working.

Should I set a thread up in there for it?

How about this: Do you think we can invest the time to curate every single TT page in order to keep problems like this from happening? Because tropers can barely even handle one page.

Crown Description:

Don't bother to say "all of them". Name specific Troper Tales pages that should be axed. An "UP" Vote means you think it should be cut completely. A "DOWN" vote means it should be kept.

"I don't care for this page" is not a reason to cut it. "This page is unsalvagable. Kill it with fire" is.

PLEASE bullet point pro and con examples if there are more than one.
