The wider-hipped can have problems even if they're not particularly obese, as do taller people in the other dimension, though that's mostly about legroom.
There's a heck of a lot of things that are designed around the military-age, military-fit male body, simply because that was (is?) the largest available ergonomic database for physical data. Some of them took that dataset directly, others simply copied the measurements of things that were designed around it.
A brighter future for a darker age.Really, there should be more regulations to airline companies about the sizing of their seats.
They also need to consider that the average body size (both in terms of height and weight) has been increasing over the last century or so. A seat that was suitable for the majority 50 years ago will be less suitable now.

Thread Hop. Obesity is both a cause and effect of poor health, but not all unhealthy people are obese. My little sister, for instance, yesterday ate two bowls of refined-carb-and-sodium-heavy microwavable soup between getting home from school and eating dinner, then ate another of the abominations in a cup after a large dinner, and always puts marshmallows on her cocoa. She also has a skinny dancer's body. Unhealthy, yes. Fat, no.
Discouraging fat people from exercising is the very definition of counterproductive.
"All pain is a punishment, and every punishment is inflicted for love as much as for justice." — Joseph De Maistre.I am five feet tall and 140 pounds and constantly get the most nerve grating bullshit from a vegan "friend" (he doesn't really deserve to be called that anymore after a recent incident). Here are some things he will disregard as long as they come from me, because he considers me obese *:
- Telling him to study more, because I'm fat and therefore don't exercise therefore study too much and therefore have no life and will therefore encourage him to do the same.
- Telling him that a balanced diet should work about as well as veganism (healthwise; I'm not sure if he really gives a shit about the environment) because look how well that turned out for me! Ignoring the fact that I did not have a balanced diet when I was gaining weight and am much better informed now.
- Relationships, because I'm fat and therefore have no experience and am therefore not to be taken seriously in the slightest. Even though a lot of people have taken my advice and it worked because I'm observant.
I have noted that my resentment of his treatment of me is less effective motivation than thinking about heart disease and all that fun stuff. I end up making voodoo dolls rather than exercise.
Another thing that irritates me is how he tells me I should be vegan so I don't have to exercise. My family will not allow this for financial reasons, and I don't want it. Not like he cares.
I support common courtesy for fat people.

Warm hugs and morally questionable advice given here. Prosey BitchfestThat is a deeply unhealthy attitude to take, and I am saying this as a vegetarian who probably should exercise more.
And yeah, your "friend" seems to care more about the shallow stereotypical appearance of health than actual health itself.

People should be encouraged to eat healthy and exercise more, true, but one can be perfectly healthy and happy while also being fat, so I don't see what the problem is.

Not true.
