[up][up] Oh, for sure! Plus, Soul Sisters is a really fun deck. I'm considering putting it together so I have a Modern-ready deck that isn't Enduring Ideal (because that's not great these days).

So I have another deck I've been working on, this time specifically for the Pauper format.

I'm shooting for mono-blue mill with this one.

A little bit late, but I was looking at your Modern list, Jawa, and I'm a bit concerned. I play a lot of Modernnote  and your deck folds to basically all of mine.

BUT!

There's a few cheap cards you can add in to help your matchup against a lot of popular decks. Note that I'm not trying to steer you into a set archetype or anything, just providing what are hopefully some helpful suggestions. If you don't want any of them, I totally understand.

  • Path to Exile. It's kind of expensive ($20 for a playset), but it's amazing. It removes a lot of major bombs (Wurmcoil Engine vs. Tron, Exarch/Mite vs. Twin etc) and is just efficient as all hell. #1 card that any deck playing white should use in Modern.

  • Ethersworn Canonist or Eidolon of Rhetoric (sideboard). As it stands, you almost straight up lose to Storm (who can deal 100+ damage in a turn if you let them do their thing). Both cards shut them down immediately, and they hose a lot of other decks that rely on playing multiple things a turn (e.g. Ad Nauseam). I recommend Eidolon, as it's cheaper and has 4 toughness (which passes the bolt test).

  • Stony Silence (sideboard). This card hoses Affinity and Pod like nobody's business. It also helps your matchup against Mono U and UW Tron, as it stops them from activating their mana rocks.

  • Rest in Peace (sideboard). Like Stony Silence, this is one of White's best hate cards. It stops Living End and Storm pretty handily, and it also majorly impacts decks that use the yard as a resource (aka any deck with Snapcaster, Birthing Pod).

  • Spectral Procession. Since you're playing all White, this card should always be able to be cast for 3 mana. 3 1/1 flyers for 3 mana is straight value, and 3 creatures entering the battlefield fits right in with your plan.

  • Martyr of Sands. Absolutely fantastic vs. Burn (which, unfortunately is a lot of the meta) and just value in general.

  • Lastly, I recommend something like Honor of the Pure. It lets you use your life dorks fairly aggressively.

I, personally, would cut Sky Hussar (are you even casting it? If not, that card is way too slow) and Norn's Annex. Both are kinda slow.

Hopefully my suggestions help! I really like your deck's style and hope it does well.

[up] First, big thanks on your in-depth look at my deck as it is right now.

  • Path to Exile: I had looked at the card as a sideboard piece, since I was looking to the likes of Oblivion Ring for it's more wide-reaching coverage and lack of boosting the opponents land base, though I could see moving a few to main deck.

  • Ethersworn Canonist or Eidolon of Rhetoric: I'm curious about how typical Storm interaction works during actual play - I've currently got Spirit of the Labyrinth in my sideboard, and I'm wondering if it fills the same kind of role or how they compare.

  • Stony Silence: Seems reasonable. I'll see where I can fit it.

  • Rest in Peace: Likewise.

  • Spectral Procession: Same.

  • Martyr of Sands: I could see if there's a place in my sideboard for it. I'm not quite so sure about main decking it.

  • Sky Hussar: Sky Hussar seems a smart enough cut. I originally included it as an attempt at white card draw, but having someone actually say that it's too slow kind of make me realize that it doesn't work nearly as well at stretching White's abilities as well as the likes of Dawn or Rebuff.

  • Norn's Annex: This, on the other hand, I'm not so sure on dropping, since I'm looking at it less like a 5 drop and more as a potential 3 drop. With the lifegain thing going on, playing 4 life doesn't seem nearly as big an issue as it normally would, and in cases where the opponent is playing plenty of white I'm currently running with the idea of 3 Ghostly Prison in the sideboard to swap in its place.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions and advice, and I'll definitely take a look at what I've got, see where I can switch things up, and then probably share the new version to see if there's any more advice to possibly be offered.

Glad to help.

As for Spirit of the Labyrinth, it's a little bit different. It stops Storm from drawing, which can hurt, but it dies to a Grapeshot or Lightning Bolt. Eidolon of Rhetoric stops them from comboing out at all (since they can only cast one spell) and survives a lightning bolt. Because it survives a Lightning Bolt, they can't just double bolt it, which means that they'll have to try and track down an Echoing Truth or something similar to get rid of it. I'm much more concerned seeing an Eidolon across the table than the Spirit if I'm playing Storm.

Norn's Annex is fairly viable in the sense that it bleeds any sort of "fair" deck (like Pod, Junk, Zoo, w/e) and stops Twin (it's hard to attack with infinite anything with that card out), but it's almost useless vs U Wr, Affinity, Tron, etc. I, personally, would sideboard it and replace it with Honor of the Pure (which is more helpful against a wider variety of matchups). That way you can pull it out if you go up against a "fair" deck, but it won't clog your hand and be a dead card vs. unfair decks.

On a related note, would you be able to get Ghostly Prison? I feel like it's a little bit better than Norn's Annex.

I have finally gotten around to building that Temur Monstrosity deck I've been wanting to. Here's the decklist and description.

I put this deck through its paces tonight at the game shop. I've found that it is somewhat weak in the early game, and I'm looking for some advice on how I can improve on that, as well as just improving the deck in general.

[up]The best cards for shoring up your early game would be Rattleclaw Mystic and Heir of the Wilds. Probably cut embodiment of springs and more inefficient monsters (tromo, shipbreaker kraken) for them. I'd also go up to 4 Crater's Claws, the card is great.

So I've been putting together a couple Dredge lists (#1 and #2. Thoughts? Should I go with the Sultai over Golgari? Anything you all would suggest? I admit that I don't play a ton of standard, so my experience with the format is very limited.

Okay, so this is my current Temur deck for Standard. It's a work in progress with a lot of cards being placeholders and it was also only tested against two different Standard decks which weren't even "meta" (and I played it against a Delver Modern deck, once, too), so I expect it to suck. It's also probably a testament to how much of a Weird-Gimmick-Timmy I am.

Tear it to pieces guys (please?).

  • Lands: 23 (maybe too much? I have some 5 or 6 CMC cards in there)
    • 7 Forest
    • 5 Island
    • 2 Mountain
    • 4 Shivan Reef
    • 2 Temple of Abandon (needed some more fixing and this was the only thing I could get)
    • 3 Wooded Foothills

  • Creatures: 25 (prepare for TIMMY)
    • 3 Elvish Mystic (I'd swear I had 4)
    • 4 Rattleclaw Mystic
    • 3 Heir of the Wilds (I'd also swear I had 4)
    • 2 Savage Knuckleblade (I only have 2 so far. I can trade for the other 2 soon-ish, though)
    • 2 Sagu Mauler (I fear targetted removal and I like morph)
    • 2 Bear's Companion (soon to be replaced with more Knuckles. I had something else before but this card is pretty cute and wanted to try it out. It doesn't work as well as I would have liked)
    • 2 Surrak Dragonclaw (He's my mancrush, okay? I also think he's quite good, though. Maybe that's just because he's my mancrush)
    • 3 Illusory Angel (Oh right Ill-what? To be fair, it's 4 power (relevant to Ferocious, and relevant to the opponent's face), it flies and it's cheap enough, it has a weird casting restriction but it's not hard to get it down the same turn as an Elvish Mystic, for example. Not the best play, but it's the best (and most fun) flier I have access to in Temur colors right now)
    • 4 Generator Servant (I'm in love with this card even though it screams YOU NERD to my face)

  • Instants: 4
    • 4 Stubborn Denial (not letting go of this one)

  • Sorceries: 4
    • 2 Crater's Claws
    • 2 See the Unwritten (I can't say no to 2 "free" creatures!)

  • Enchantments: 3
    • 3 Temur Ascendancy (I really want to like this card. I like its design. I like its art. I like everything about it, but I never, ever, manage to get anything out of it. Maybe it's just me, but it kinda sucks)

  • Planeswalker:: 1
    • Sarkhan Dragonspeaker. (I forgot about him earlier because a friend borrowed it)

Okay, now my thoughts: If I'm going to get serious, I'm willing to cut most of the "quirky" things off the deck (See the Unwritten, Servant, Angel, Surrak, etc) and make a secondary "for fun" deck with them. I've got most of the Temur "utility kit" (Temur Charm, Mindswipe, Savage Punch, Roar of Challenge, Trap Essence, Icy Blast, etc.) around here waiting to be used (I planned on iterating tests with those once I got the 2 Knuckles I didn't have yet and could attend to FNM). I also have Treasure Cruise (like seven, maybe?) and other things I just don't remember now. What I don't have, like, at all, is Theros block cards, that's why none is in there.

My general guess is that I should cut on some creatures and add Charms; also some cheap removal or anything that allows me to break through fat blockers or basically slow down my opponent, maybe? I don't know how to exactly face specific strategies (well, Whip of Erebos needs graveyard hate, that's for sure), but I'd rather leave that for when I get a taste of the local meta.

And maybe something to hold down aggro because that's the thing I fear the most. If I manage to get a Knuckles or two, some flier (Phoenixes, if I had any) or maybe a Mauler, looks like I'll be able to keep momentum, and with Charms and Denials (plus their built-in survivability) I guess I can just stave off most non-creature shenanigans or removal attempts enough time to get the game to a critical point (I can always finish with Crater's Claws later) just by hitting people in the face. But aggro could just hit me in the face too fast instead, and running Painlands and Fetchlands that's really dangerous. And I'm not going to use my mana dorks like walls early, I need them as mana dorks early. Is there something that can kinda slow down aggro in Temur colors besides Caryatids?

Thought occurred to me: How well do you think Herald of Anafenza would fit into my mono-white deck from above? Could it legitimately fit somewhere or am I just letting myself get distracted by it away from what I really want to be doing?

It won't help you. It takes 4 mana to even turn on, will almost never attack and dies to Pyroclasm and Anger of the Gods (which most people are packing to deal with Delver).

It's a fun card in Limited, though. Takes over games if people don't get rid of it asap.

[up] One mana to put it down, another turn, and then 3 more mana, because Outlast is a tap ability in addition to not being a combat trick. :/

Not really sure it deserves Rare status; Uncommon, maybe.

It's a rare because it's a Limited powerhouse. I don't think it's tournament-viable in Constructed, but it's quite bonkers anyway. Repeatable tokens are scary.

Quick question because I can't find the answer anywhere: If I have a morphed Zotetic Cavern and it dies, does that count as "a land [I] control [being] put into a graveyard from the battlefield" for the purposes of Titania, Protector of Argoth's second ability triggering or not?

No, because it wasn't a land on the battlefield. It was a 2/2 creature with no color, name or types.

Anyone have any suggestions for cheap equipment to add to Forged in Stone? It's general is build around equipment, but it doesn't feel like the deck has enough to really take advantage of it. At the same time, I'm on a budget.

My Kemba Equipment deck was the second deck I built and the one I've had the longest, so I could probably give you a list of some of the equipment pieces I've been using to help give you ideas. Bear in mind that I don't know exactly what's in the precon deck, so there might be some overlap.

  • Loxodon Warhammer
  • Gorgon Flail
  • Angelic Armaments
  • Moonsilver Spear
  • Blight Sickle
  • Executioner's Hood
  • Ring of Thune
  • Witche's Eye
  • Bladed Pinions
  • Mask of Avacyn
  • Trailblazer's Boots
  • Dead-Iron Sledge

[up][up]Thanks. A few of those came with the set, but most of them did not. The one issue with the pre-cons is that that they are build around both the Walkder Commander and the new legendary creature in mind for the commander. Nahiri, The Lithomancer want's it to be an equipment deck, but Jazal Goldmane wants it to be a token deck.

So this week I've finally gotten through playing the default version of the Built From Scratch 2014 Commander Deck and begun the process of switching things around.

One of the things I'm wondering about is the number of lands in it, and already cut 1 basic land to bring the total land count down to 40, since I can't help but feel that having 41 lands it just a teensy bit excessive. From the looks of things, it also looks like the route things are going I'm going to be lowering the overall mana curve a little as well.

How much is it going to hurt overall if I cut the deck down to 39 or even 38 lands overall? Depending even on how many rocks I'm packing? I'm not talking about an excessive land count, just trimming it a touch from the default land value.
