Ahh, console video games (or vidcons as I call them). the ultimate medium of expression, able to convey any emotion ranging from hatred to love, loyalty to fear, all in front of our eyes. Ah, and with lovingly crafted art, music, and the ability to control the action, vidcons are the ultimate combination of the high arts. While I tend to play the stoic, I will be the first to admit that vidcons haven driven me to cry, to scream and shout, to feel actual hate; such is the power of this force beyond our wildest reckoning. And here I am, before you, to temp your tongues with the taint of such a tantalizing topic.

And the Japanese, the true geniuses behind the world of video games. Pah, I throw my scorn upon such incompetents of the West who would mock the true art of the Japanese with 'games' such as Baldur's Gate and Madden. Perhaps it is that the West is not as intelligent as the East, but this is a matter for another day. Japan has given us such masterpieces as the Final Fantasy series, Star Ocean, Wild Arms, and of course, Arc the Lad. Yes, some of the finest vidcons in the world were created by Japanese. I come to you today to ask you in all earnesty, what is your favorite vidcon? I will reveal mine after the grand debate has illustriously begun, but not before the first poster falls victim to my plot of discussion.

In other words, this is a thread on an imaginary forum our avatars frequent. The topic can fluctuate, and its mostly just general discussion.

Pretty much.

To be fair, I did stall off your sister for a pretty decent amount of time with a pistol, didn't I?

Sure, but you still didn't kill her after a headshot. I've killed Lamia enough times to know that a jab to the face will keep her dead for a good solid hour.

BTW, I feel like Morgan should know this: monsters don't really stay dead even if you use magic metals.

...Sort of? When you kill them, their souls go to Tartarus and they piece themselves back together from there.

What if I transport them to a universe that's incompatible with them?

That is a very good question which I do not have an answer to.

Monsters regenerate in Tartarus, which, I assume, is not fully affected by the laws of physics. Because it’s literally Tartarus. As for bringing them to a different universe, that might work. Except we don’t have the tech for that, and unfortunately magic doesn’t go that far.

So they always keep coming back? I guess that's because in your world everything is ultimately eternal. Is there anything in your world that has disappeared forever, or is that literally impossible?

By the way, my mother asked me to walk our dog with her, and there were so many gnats outside. They kept surrounding me and biting me, and I could not get rid of them even with bug spray. Will need to shower again after this.

Wulfenbach, can you and Sturmvoraus find any concrete evidence that the ancient Greek gods do not really exist in our universe?

...Why?

Having pirated all that Herr Riordan published on Leo & Alabaster's homeworld, I worry that one of my Masters' wives could have possibly slept with a god. If that's true, then the house I serve might be illegitimate.

Oh, I see. That's actually a worrying thought, now that I think of it. The royal houses here care a great deal about inheritance, bloodlines, and all that. The news of ancient divine homewreckers might just destabilize our entire social order.

...Destabilize it more, I mean.

On the plus side, unlike half-bloods, the Heterodynes were loved by monsters.

As concrete evidence that the Greek gods don't exist in your homeworld, I could try sampling some ichor/air (because that probably has some Mist content) and see if it decays in your homeworld. Getting your hands on ichor would probably be difficult, though, and I'm currently preparing the update on the multiverse theory that I've been promising.

Actually, us half-bloods do have a bit of ichor in our bloodstream. I suppose I could send a blood sample of myself, and Gil could test if anything changes with it's composition when put in his homeworld.

Also, speaking of all this inter-universe travel stuff, do you have any idea where my homeworld is on your grading system?

Yeah, I'm fine with giving blood. But I don't know how I'd get it to you, since I'm trying to stay hidden over here.

Wait, Alabaster, I have an idea! You told me what Mistforms are in our PMs. If Icarus' spaceship was in your Earth's orbit, do you think you could summon Dr. Claymore onto the ship?

   What? Why me?

Um, theoretically, but it would take a lot of effort on my part.

Good enough! So you think you can get him to carry the blood sample with him?

Alabaster, are you actually considering summoning me over 330,000 miles away from the Earth's surface?

I'll use my telescope to make sure you're safe. Besides, it'll be two minutes at most, don't worry.

Young man, are you out of your mind?

You know, Dr. Claymore, you sound just like Boris when I discuss civil engineering projects with him.

[1] That's fine, hope you get well soon!

Update on the multiverse theory at last! I'd recommend you use a function plotter if you want to follow along with the more mathematical parts.

    open/close all folders

     What's new?

This right here is a sketch of an identity particle (the red circle with an A) bonded to a buffer particle (the black circle with the same size and a black dot in it). This particle acts out a binding force onto the whole "surface" of the buffer particle, which is only dependent on the angle between the i-particle and a buffer surface point. You can model a function of angle to binding force using a certain family of functions - more on that below, though.
If you have multiple i-particles (even from different universes!) bound to the same buffer, the binding forces from all i-particles add up. And if at some point, the sum of the forces exceeds a threshold value, the buffer becomes oversaturated and starts removing bonds until the sum falls below the threshold again.

     Math stuff

The binding force of an i-particle can be modelled using this family of functions, where s is any constant between 1 and infinity, theta is the angle between a point on the buffer and an i-particle, and sigma describes how quickly the function falls off. If this reminds you of a normal distribution, that's because it's nearly the same function! This function is defined between zero and pi (radians), and here's what it looks like with s = 1.1 and sigma = 0.6.
Now, I said that the forces add up, and here's what that looks like. The blue curve is the same kind of i-particle, just offset by 0.9 (radians), and the green curve is the sum of both. In this diagram, the cumulative force does not go above one anywhere, but if we move the second i-particle a bit closer...
[2]
...the green curve goes above one and the buffer particle becomes oversaturated.
You can keep on adding i-particles to the buffer up to a certain limit, which varies from universe to universe.

Note that I might and probably will swap out the function at some point, as it tends to have a nonzero derivative at pi. If I can construct a function that satisfies that condition, I'll probably use it instead

     Freeplay in the bonding mechanism

Most of the time, the math won't perfectly add up so that the buffer particle has reached its capacity and the cumulative force equals one at exactly the halfway point between each identity particle. Usually, the maximum cumulative force will be something below one, and depending on how close to one it is, the angles may shift a tiny bit. The individual particles will still naturally try to arrange themselves in such a way that the maximum cumulative force is minimized. I'll leave finding a set of values that leads to those kinds of conditions up to the reader, though.

     What does this mean?

The compatibility degree scale can still be used, but if this theory holds, it might give us a tool to assess a universe's degree much more accurately. The model could potentially pave the way to more complex portal mechanisms as well as functional identity crystals, but I don't believe most people on this thread are concerned about either.

     Unanswered questions

Of course, this theory isn't complete, and there are a lot of unresolved questions that need further investigation (and have partially already been investigated). Here are some of them:

  • Is there a minimum distance that identity particles must have from each other or from buffer particles?
  • What effects do loose i-particles have on their universe?
  • What about direct bonds between two i-particles?

TL;DR there is some interesting complexity to how identity particles bond with buffer party. Except for the not-well-understood edge case of freeplay, most of this complexity can still be simplified to a minimum angle between i-particles, which determines how many of them can bond with a buffer particle at most. The complexity only comes into play when you try to make your own identity crystals.
And yes, I'm using folders, because I already know this will fill screens

[3] Alternatively, I could hide a syringe in a storage box somewhere, then you quickly take a sample, return it to the box, and I pick it up again. How does that sound? Or are you stuck at your current location?

I'm not "stuck" here, so as long as it's not too far away from where I'm staying, I'll be able to leave. I'm just using this abandoned building as a home base for now.

What software do you use for the 3D graphs? Usually when it comes to 3D graphics the applications I'm most familiar with are AutoCAD, Autodesk Maya, and Autodesk Mudbox, but those are for mostly modeling stuff.
