All right. Should we do a crowner, or do we not have enough examples yet?

A couple more choices wouldn't hurt.

Maybe panels 3 and 4 of this Thunderstruck? I don't know if panel two is necessary for context or not.

Third and fourth are pretty good. Second's a little too obtrusive and doesn't explain much that we need to know aside from "he's going to die", which we can infer from the latter two. Somewhat.

Here's an example of the Belgian series Durango.

And all that was left was silence...

I really don't know what's happening there.

...What? Him saying "I'll get the horses" makes it seem like he's gonna help the black-haired guy, then he shoots him, then...the black hair guy is looking over his grave? What the hell?

Yeah, the second black-haired guy is not the first one. (You'll notice the dying one has no sidebuns while the mourning one does)

But apparently that doesn't come out clearly from the picture. Okay, never mind.

Crowner's up. Anyone who still has examples, I'll toss them right in with the rest.

Any objections to using the full version with the first speech bubble erased?

Give it some time. The crowner's been up for less than a day, and right now, even the top-scoring option is still short of 60% in favor

Not a lot of votes coming in, it seems.

Well, the problem with crowners is that if they start to sink, people stop voting on them, and they become irrelevant, when they should be the first matters to be settled since they already have options to choose from.

The main problem about the bottom panel only is that it comes off more as an Apologetic Attacker and not a Mercy Kill; the top panel gives it the context it needs.

Agreed. "Bottom panel only" doesn't work for this trope at all.

They're about even right now, though I'd really rather go with the version with the top frame for context's sake and the reasons stated above.

Not quite a fan of the full page, myself, mostly for reasons of succinctness. Seems the bottom two panels still convey the image quite well, in my mind. In tears, and saying sorry before doing it.

Just because it would also work as an Apologetic Attacker doesn't mean it's ineligible for this trope as well.

Still, voting seems neck and neck, with the four panel in a slight lead, though two panels were winning this morning. Give it a few more days.

Don't take life too seriously. It's only a temporary situation.

While I understand the desire for succinctness, the top frame adds only a little bit of space but informs that they're talking about a zombie infection (or if that's not clear enough, at least The Virus), which gives the reason as to why she's shooting him.

[up] Exactly; we need to know why it's a Mercy Kill so we can properly interpret it as such.

#48: Jan 29th 2011 at 8:12:48 AM

Indeed.

Without context, for all we know she's saying she loves her dad who is off-screen, and she's shooting someone else.

Since it's been in the lead for a while, I put the full comic up.
