A couple more choices wouldn't hurt.
Maybe panels 3 and 4 of this Thunderstruck
? I don't know if panel two is necessary for context or not.

Here's an example of the Belgian series Durango.
All right, as requested earlier, here's the L4D comic with the earlier white speech bubble blacked out
◊. Here's another where I tried to patch out the speech bubble altogether to make it blend with the bakcground
◊. This is the same one, but cropped a little more.
◊ Which is the best, or is it best with the blank speech bubble?
I'd say we have enough for a crowner now, no?
The main problem about the bottom panel only is that it comes off more as an Apologetic Attacker and not a Mercy Kill; the top panel gives it the context it needs.
Not quite a fan of the full page, myself, mostly for reasons of succinctness. Seems the bottom two panels still convey the image quite well, in my mind. In tears, and saying sorry before doing it.
Just because it would also work as an Apologetic Attacker doesn't mean it's ineligible for this trope as well.
Still, voting seems neck and neck, with the four panel in a slight lead, though two panels were winning this morning. Give it a few more days.
Don't take life too seriously. It's only a temporary situation. While I understand the desire for succinctness, the top frame adds only a little bit of space but informs that they're talking about a zombie infection (or if that's not clear enough, at least The Virus), which gives the reason as to why she's shooting him.
Exactly; we need to know why it's a Mercy Kill so we can properly interpret it as such.

All right. Should we do a crowner, or do we not have enough examples yet?
