Dear tropers:
Some time ago, I started playing Super Street Fighter IV, and I want to get better at it. Unfortunately, I don´t have many people against whom to test my skills and my internet connection is too unstable for multiplayer. What could I do to improve while only in single player mode? I can grasp the basics of the game, but, for example, don´t know what a "cancel" is, and I´ve never seen it defined. A friend of mine pointed me to the eventhubs page, but it looks too technical.
I´ve tried to progress doing some of the characters' challenges, but for the more complex (usually those beyond 12 or something) I can´t get the timing right. Do you have any advise for that?
Thank you very much for your support :D
Suffer not the witch to live.Cancels are simple - it's when you do a regular move and then immediately do a special move, or do a special move and then immediately do a super.
You do them by doing the input for a second move while you are doing the first - for example, Ryu can cancel his standing medium into a shoryuken should you do the shoryuken motion while he's punching, or Ken can do his Shoryureppa while his shoryuken is hitting if you do another shoryuken motion as the first shoryu is in motion.
Can anyone PM me on how to do guile's moves on a PS 3 controller? Using a joystick is one thing, tis another matter on dpad or dualshock controller.
"Fan, a Mega Man character."I have two other questions:
1) I´ve got an xbox 360 and play SF with an ordinary controller. I´m trying to get better with zangief, but haven´t been able to make his 720 ultra combos without first jumping in the direction of my opponent. However, when I played with an arcade-type controller, I could do it without much effort. Any advise on how to pull it off without a special controller?
2) What are, in your opinion, the best controllers for playing SF IV on the Xbox? Are there specific models that are better than other, or it´s just a matter of getting an arcade-type controller?
Suffer not the witch to live. The xbox dpad is just generally terrible for anything.
Fun, somewhat relevant fact: the last SF 2:HD Remix tournament at EVO was won by a Zangief player (snakeeyes) using a pad. I couldn't tell you what kind of pad, but whichever one it is sounds like a good bet.

Except [condescending response follows]. Because [sarcasm here]. You do understand [snark], right? POTHOLE TO SARCASM MODEOne question that i've always wanted to know the answer too but lacked the means or motivation to bother looking for... In those tournaments, how often do upsets from low-tier characters happen? Whenever i see tournament gameplay it's always Ken, Ryu or Chun-Li. Always.
Also, i spent about four hours straight on Super Street Fighter IV online yesterday. I met one M.Bison player and One Zangief player. The rest where all shotos. I am not kidding. At all.
You are not alone.
Depends on the game? In some games the bottom tier (or even the bottom half of the roster) pretty much cannot win ever, in other games it's more up in the air. And Ken, Ryu, and/or Chun aren't dominant in every version of Street Fighter, you really shouldn't have a hard time finding tourney play of other characters.
Maybe it isn´t a matter of tiers, but of fame instead? After all, Ryu, Ken and Chun Li are among the most widely known street fighter characters, the most iconic. In the case of Ryu and Ken, you also have some pretty straightforward techniques which makes them pretty easy for new players, who will probably keep with those characters as they start honing their skills.

I figured a majority of the players i fought would be Ryu/Kens because of that (Plus Akuma because he's so kewl!!!!!!111) but i fought dozens of people and they where all gi-wearing hadouken-shooting shoryukeners. It got a bit ridiculous. I'm honestly now a proponent of more shotos now just because i want a little variety in the pre-battle quotes.
I'll be leaving now.

With the D-Pad? I don't quite follow you.
