Not really an example if you know the work: Slasher Smile

He doesn't have to be obviously comitting an atrocity at the time for it to count as a Slasher Smile.

Yeah, but it helps keep it from being Just A Face And A Smile.

[up][up] JAFAAC doesn't apply for Facial Expression Tropes, remember?

I link to them for context as a means of supplying frames of animation that might be less likely to confuse people into mistaking it for him being burned alive. o.o

In any case, I downloaded the video and played the scene in slow motion. Here are the screenshots I came up with in the process.

(Pixelated, I know, but that will change with resizing if any of those shots are picked.)

Jekyll is the best so far. It shows clearly the "about to do something nasty" part with the knife and the reflected girls in it.

Jekyll is fine. The Frollo one is not better. Even ignoring context or the knife, the smile just doesn't look as slasher-y, the fire obscures the image.

I just don't like the Frollo image because I think it's ugly.

I have nothing against the Frollo image except that some of the other images suggested so far are way better.

Interesting note, genuine happy smiles tend not to bare the bottom row of teeth; if they are showing, the smile usually seems fake or menacing.

Think you want to add that to the trope description?

Might help demonstrate one of the reasons why the Slasher Smile is so off-putting.

[up][up] Not true. Big, happy grins, usually from a Cheerful Child in anime, show the bottom row of teeth.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the current image, it's creepy as hell and clearly not joyful or friendly. I'm sick of the whole 'if you know the context...' argument that keeps coming up for images lately. The context is displaying the trope to an immediate audience, not considering its use outside of the description page.

On the other hand, if you can find an equally fitting image that does work in-context, why not use that one?

The Jekyll pic does seem to be the superior option for depicting the trope here.

Because, honestly, I think the current pic gives off a stronger vibe of being really fucking creepy without anything else in the way of it. To me the Jekyl one looks like he's constipated with you only knowing it's a mad grin because of the weapon. Shrug.

Since there's considerable debate between Frollo, Jekyll, the current image, and the other suggestions, perhaps it's time for a crowner.

Sure, let's go with that. Might even result in some other good images turning up.

All right, I made the crowner.

"Not true. Big, happy grins, usually from a Cheerful Child in anime, show the bottom row of teeth."

Yes it is :P It is a fact based on how facial muscles work that when the bottom teeth are exposed it's usually due to "forcing" the lips apart too far. (But some people just smile big.) A Duchenne/happy smile generally only bares the top teeth.

Pointing out that cartoon faces differ from RL faces doesn't refute anything about a comment on RL faces.

For what it's worth, the unsourced manga that's dead last looks like a fanart of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei...the guy with the glasses is Nozomu and the girl might be Chiri.

The "Mr. Hyde" example looks more like a generic grin. (EDIT: Almost a happy one, which goes against the theme of this trope.) The "Comics Joker 1" example has the kind of fierceness that one would associate with the Slasher Smile to begin with while the "Mr. Hyde" one doesn't.

Looks like Hyde's got a pretty solid lead now. Leave the crowner to cook a little longer, or put 'im up?

I think his lead is strong enough to run with him.
