@Woolie: Yeah, like in Half Life 2, where turning sv_cheats 1 on disables Achievements.
umm...you appear to have completely forgotten the entire point of "Internet Anonymity"...or the reason why so little people actually use their faces in avatars, or so little people are honest about where they live or how old they are. Or why people rarely ever use their actual names as handles(unless Indigo really is your real name).
Why do you think sites never ask you for your Real name, your address, your phone, your biggest fears, etc. when they want you to sign in? Because no one would join those sites if they did.

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."Yes but remember, your trophies don't go to your real name. Mine go to my handle that I'm currently using here as I do on my Ps3. If I'm fine with people seeing what I'm doing here, why would I have a problem with people seeing what I'm doing on my Ps3?
Yes, internet anonimity is great, but what he's talking about is internet seclusion.
Because many people, like those who don't care too much for Twitter or Facebook, like their own privacy.
Also, internet seclusion would be outright refusing to play or talking with other people in an online game.

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."![]()
Hehe. But some people like internet seclusion. And really, internet seclusion is far, far different from actual seclusion.
I'm just confused as to why I should care if I can see other people's achievements or why they should be able to see mine. I'm not bothered but the concept seems strange to me.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahThat said, I have no agenda against Achievements. Like when I got some stupid "Irony" achivement for taking a picture of Sander Cohen after killing him, my reaction was just a very neutral and tire "whoo...that was totally worth the effort of programming it into the game, effort that coulda been used on other things.".
My "gripe" is more against anyone who thinks lesser of consoles or developers just because they didn't bother with achievements. Like...the people who are so used to achievements now that they believe every serious game outghta have them. *
Also, they do get annoyingly pointless sometimes. Imagine they added achievements in Touhou. "Congragulations, you beat Sakuya without dying once in Normal Mode or above!"...who hasn't?!

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."I haven't because the backgrounds are distracting and disorientating so I haven't had a chance to really practice E So D? People who suck?
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahI can take or leave Achievements and similar. I'm a bit of a completionist, but if that last percentage is grindy or ridiculous, I don't bother and don't begrudge the folks who do.
That said, isn't one of the Achievements for the original Ecco The Dolphin on... I think X Box Live Arcade to beat the game thrice without dying? Yeah. No.
Okay, maybe Sakuya is a tad difficult of an example...but atleast she's still easier than Patchouli sometimes.
The backgrounds are distracting? The music is more distracting imo, since I just close my eyes to listen to it instead of dodging bullets (hence I turn down the volume a bit)...but I didn't know the EOSD had distracting backgrounds....

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."E So D is the only game in the series that does that to me. I can ignore them easily enough in the other games, but E So D's are just obnoxious and painful to look at. I actually get sick while playing it so I don't.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan Chahhuh...I just unintentially did a Touhou derail...ah well, Nintendo is a video game company, Touhou is an indy game...on-topic enough.
So howabout that Patchouli eh? Cheap cheater who doesn't stick to one bullet pattern like everyone else...in a game that doesn't just let you skip to a boss in a practice mode to let you get used to her pattern.

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."Very relevant.
Anyways, Achievement Farming was (and still is) a bit of a problem in Team Fortress 2. Now with the addition of the Item Drop and Trading and Mann-conomy, some Achievement Servers have also become Idle and Trade Servers. Bit of an evolutionary response, I must say.
I don't know what to think about achievements (or "cheevos", as one Penny Arcade character lovingly called them). I like having goals to go for, but....eh, strikes me as just as tad contrived. As if the capital-A Achievements are more prestigious than my home-baked ones.
I have no systems with cheevos though, so I can't say.
It Just Bugs MeWhat I don't mind is when they give me some good ideas.
Like "A run without any civillian consumes? Why the hell not?"
One of my few regrets about being born female is the inability to grow a handlebar mustache. -LandstanderKilling gaming? Yeah, that's fucking stupid.
I do like the thought of achievements giving me new ideas. It reminds me of the challenges some forums have where you have to beat levels under certain unusual conditions. Stuff like the SM 64 TAS competitions. We can all help each other see games in ways we had never thought of before.

It Just Bugs MeBut you coulda easily done it even if it wasn't an achievement...isn't that the point of Cherry Tapping and/or Self-Imposed Challenge?

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."

Dude, theres a line between "liking alone time" and "wanting to have no way of anyone knowing anything about me, or my existence". Thats the line typically only crossed by hermits.
If you wanna cheat, a lot of games still let you, they just turn off your achievements/trophies when you do. GTA IV, Uncharted, God of War, all these games let you cheat. Its games where you cheat but still want the credit where you get banned.
