I really like achievement systems and completing lists. It's satisfying to me. I don't really care about other people's achievements and scores so I don't give a shit that Nintendo's achievement systems are game specific and such. Unless I know you and like you your gamer penis means nothing to me.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahFound the comments more enlightening than the actual article. Despite being a huge Nintendo fanboy until a few years ago, I think they are just trying to wimp out on doing an overall point system on their console.
Mind you, I never really care about Achievements and/or Trophies, so I am ambivalent to their decision.
"Evii is right though" -Saturn "I didn't know you were a bitch Evii." -Lior ValWere people really asking Nintendo about achievements that much? The idea never even crossed my mind. And I love achievements (or rather, that little sound effect you hear when you get one).
And
at the guy that thinks achievements are just pointless and a waste of time but thinks a random glitch like "getting above the flagpole in world 1-1 in Super Mario Bros." isn't.

They could be to him. Everyone has different ideas of interesting and good ways to spend time. Sadly the moment such people try to pass their opinions off as objective truth that all should abide by is the moment I start shanking bitches.

The difference is that achievements are a means to an end. You're getting them based on an external will. Finding random glitches are an end in themselves, something you do because you feel like doing it.
I've always been a "game is its own reward" kind of person, so I definitely agree with Nintendo's position there. In-game achievements can be done well, though. Wii Sports Resort is a good example, setting "goals" to aspire to.
I don't really care for achievements anyway, so it doesn't really matter to me that they don't have them.
Why I am afraid of fences. The kind of achievements I like tend to be more along the lines of weird Self-Imposed Challenge, like beating the Oculus with no healer drakes. For those, an external person giving you suggestions is welcome.
Nintendo however has a tendency to include those kinds of weird things as actual ingame side goals — see Daredevil Comets, etc.
Fuck grind achievements though.

"Beat the Hell World without dying." Awesome, that sounds like a challenge.
"Do 1 million points of fire damage." Screw you.

I agree with Pykrete. Suggestions for Self Imposed Challenges are always welcome, and the game keeping track of whether or not you succeeded can be helpful depending on how obvious it is.

I kinda like achievements in a way that I can see what a friend of mine has done in the games that he and I own both. That's just coo'.
Stargate SG-1 Let's Watch. Because my ZHP thing failed.Lots of games have pointless objectives that bring nothing new to the game and are not anything worthwhile. All achievement systems do is make it more obvious, but they are not anything new. Super Smash Bros Melee had been doing trophies, and few of them were tied with any new bonuses, stages or characters. The majority were just bragging rights.
I kind of agree that every game shouldn't be forced to make an achievement system if the developer doesn't want to though.
edit :You all are missing the point(again). Nintendo has always made games with "achievements" they just don't force developers to make every game on their system use them, they are more worried about having products that work.

Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackAchievements are cool. I like them.
But why does it have to be a system wide thing?
Individual games can have achievements in the form of trophies, stickers, whatever. Good for them. Then other games can have absolutely nothing, and you know what? That's fine too.
But why should it be mandatory for every game to have 1000 gamerscore or X trophies or whatever the hell? It results in a lot of lazy ass achievements because developers don't give a damn, or super hard achievements because they want people to play the game longer. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

One of my few regrets about being born female is the inability to grow a handlebar mustache. -LandstanderI...completely agree with what the rep said. Nothing much to comment.
If you want to achieve something, just do it yourself, don't let a system tell you to do it for christ's sake. If you want to prove that you did it, upload it on youtube.
If you want your game to last longer, make the game longer rather being lazy enough to just throw down random goals.
This post in the article's comments made me giggle though...

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."Okay, that is complete and utter bullshit. Thats a false dilemna, treating it as "Either the wonder of exploration or the love of points scoring", instead of "Either exploration, or both the satisfaction of exploration and points scoring to go along with it". Fallout 3 had trophies, yet any human being who played it will tell you there was still the magic of exploration in those games. Ditto virtually every single other (good) game that involved exploration this generation. Collecting the masks in Enslaved was about learning of the past - the trophy was just icing on the cake.
"I kinda like achievements in a way that I can see what a friend of mine has done in the games that he and I own both. That's just coo'."
Yep. This is the main thing, being able to tell how far along someone is in the game, especially when I want to send a message along the lines of 'zomg, did you see that bit where snape killed sepirpoth? P. damn great right?', or checking how into the game they are.
And going for the hard ones gives a real sense of achievement. Self imposed challenges can be fun, but the temptation to strech the rules when you're doing one is rather hard to ignore. It's pretty simple, if you don't like them/care about them, just ignore them.
Oh, and for the record, it was a nintendo game which was the first use of what we would now consider achievements, in their modern form (Kirby Allstars, 2003).
"When you cut your finger, I do not bleed." Response of a man who lived on the outskirts of a concentration camp.Honestly, while I don't share the whole "Achievements/Trophies are the cancer that is killing gaming" sentiment, I wouldn't be terribly sorry to wake up tomorrow and find out that they've been removed from all games, past, present, and future, forever.
Just my $0.02, anyways

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way. While Achievements are seductive, I find the encroachment of online features on single player games rather disturbing. Part of the whole fun of single player games to me is that there is no one else; you are not compared to other players or being watched by some all-seeing eye. You can play them any way you like or even, if you so desire, cheat at them. Most PC games with them are sensible enough to let you just cheat past That One Boss but turn off achievements, but do that on a console and you could get banned.

Out of Context Theater: Mike K "'Bloody Pussies' cracked me up"

YES.
...Even if lots of their individual games have their own personal Achievements systems. But that leaves how they operate up to the game.
