No idea. This one always wanted to be either the heroic knight saving the princess or the evil witch causing trouble.
But as a hypothesis, girls are taught from early age that their main value is beauty and their success is powerful husband and pretty dresses.

If we disagree, that much, at least, we have in commonPersonally, I played being a hero, too. And princesses or fairies didn't hold any appeal to me. I think it's more of a enforced stereotype. People think girls should like princesses, so they give them toys associated with it and the girls learn it's good to play with them. Wash, rinse and repeat till they have their own kids.

Because fairies got wings! XD
Also, royalty. I wouldn't mind being a princess, though I'd probably cause most of my kingdom to fall into economic ruin.

If we disagree, that much, at least, we have in commonWhat if it was a Nerf gun that shot makeup darts? Like, you hit someone in the eye with mascara?
Nothing wrong with make up in itself! I mean, this girl
takes time to care for her hair
I don't think girls want to BE a fairy, they want to HAVE a fairy.
I'm feeling strangely happy now, contented and serene. Oh don't you see, finally I'll be, somewhere that's green...^^ I tough the same thing until...
Witch, Disney Fairies and WinxClub

Make your hearth shine through the darkest night; let it transform hate into kindness, evil into justice, and loneliness into love.I'm a man and I love the Princess and Fairy stuff, and I don't even fully know.
I think it's one part "hey, this is what's stereotypically girly, so I should be into it" for many girls and "hey, this is what's stereotypically boyish, so I should be into it."
And then there's that whole way of being catty thing. Wearing "Princess" on a shirt is a good way to try to look self-important to others. Which is exactly what many people who gets these things go for.
Why it appeals to me? I Romanticize Monarchism, despite my Left Libertarian leanings. The beautiful tales and imaginings tend to have kings and queens and princes and princesses. And fairies are an interesting Party of Mythology. Seriously, if someone uses "Princess" and "Fairy" in the same sentence, I immediately think of things like The Legend of Zelda. And if the Legend of Zelda, and if the Legend of Zelda isn't cool for boys I don't know what is.
[Minus that whole High Fantasy and Romantic heritage being nerdy and disgraceful thing. Can't have little kids getting into the Renaissance or Rome! Or studying! On with the destruction of culture! Hooray Anti-Intellectualism!]

Genkidama for Japan, even if you don't have money, you can help![1]"But as a hypothesis, girls are taught from early age that their main value is beauty and their success is powerful husband and pretty dresses." - beholderess
... to what extent, and what do you base this on?
Anyway, I wouldn't put princessess and fairies in the same category. The point of a princess is power. The function of fairies is... magic. Damn it, the lack of an apparent synonym for magic starting with f broke my alliteration pattern!

We guys when we are kids tend to play that we are superheroes. As a guy I can understan why.
But I have always wondered why girls dream that they are princess/fairies whats so cool about it?.
I have some hypothesis but I am not sure
Just being curious :)
