If I get the time, I could teach you. All you need to really learn is the basics, and then lose a lot to figure out what doesn't work. Thats how I learned.

How is the faction balance in this game anyway? I haven't really played online very much but I would hope that it isn't as crazy as Dark Crusade and Soulstorm were; probably the least balanced RTS I have ever played apart from Forces of Corruption.

I played the multi-player for quite some time, and had to stop just as Retribution was released due to school and final exams,(At least I managed to participate in the Beta) and from my experience the balance is pretty damn good actually. It is no Starcraft, but considering they have to juggle 6 distinct races, each with 3 different heroes which considerably change game-play, they are doing a very good job. Almost every race has few hero war-gears and/or unit or two that are almost useless in current meta-game, but there is nothing that is clearly or unfairly overpowered which is good.

Oh, and if you are just beginning, and don't want to have huge number of loses from learning the game, play custom games. They don't count towards your win/lose ratio, most of the players there are a bit less skilled (generally), and you can usually find several "Newbies Only" maps. You can also join L 2 P Project, which is big and quite useful community which concentrates on teaching beginners the ropes of the game, and organizing matches in general.

I still don't have time to play the game, but fortunately, that will change in a week or two. Once I am active I will gladly have a few matches or help with learning a race.

So Dawn of War 2 isn't exactly Dawn of Eldar anymore? Good to hear.

I don't know if its the same for everybody but I have never been able to beat a competant Tyranid player.

Just hit a huge bit of either Fridge Logic or just plain hypocracy during the Eldar campaign, specifically the Eldar vs. Eldar levels. So my buddy and I are tearing through these Biel-Tan with our super powerful heroes and a ton of warp spiders, when one of them dies. We had probably killed around 200 Eldar when we hear the (admittedly awesome sounding) Voice of the Eldar say "I feel the spark of precious Eldar life being extinguished". Ahh yes, precious, except for the other craftworld. Who cares about them?

[up]Which tells you how they buffed the Nids up from the first Do W II, when a competent Tryanid player couldn't hold his own against even a medium Marine player.

Do W has never been good with balance, which goes hand in hand with how many factors that they'd have to balance.

Plus, anyone who's played the actual tabletop will tell you that's nowhere near balanced either.

Yeah, on tabletop you can just shoot nids before they get to you, not so much in DOW.

[up]In Apoc 'Nids have this nasty formation that disadvantages shooty hordes: Roll two many sixes on to-hit, and then entire unit's shooting phase is canceled. Problem, Imperial Guard?

[up]Yes. And it triggers on five sixes or more. Your 30-guardsman unit, Leman Russ Punisher and Stormlord just became utterly useless.

That sucks. I just wish the tyranids died easier in Dawn of War II. And I wish that ranged units didn't choke and die when put into close combat.

I'm a little peeved that the Ancient's assault jump is a different ability from that of the Assault Marines. What if I want to send the whole lot of them in as a meteor of flaming, armored death?

Think of it this way, once upgrade his Assault Jump you get one of the most powerful (and spammable) AOE abilities in the game.

Could be anything from having a form of multiplayer with persistent terrain and such (though there's no way they'll get rid of the old form entirely) to being able to start a "campaign" with friends that gives you a large map and let's you fight battles and claim territory and stuff. The latter would be cool, especially if it saved.

You know, I noticed something about the Dawn of War series on a whole...

Now, don't get me wrong, with the exception of Soulstorm, the Dawn of War series is top-notch. However, after I re-played some of Dawn of War II (original)'s campaign again, I noticed that the series seems to have a stronger campaign the less armies you get to play as. And I'm not just talking story here, but also balance-wise for the campaign. In Dawn of War II and Chaos Rising, there was a real tension that I felt, given that I was hardcapped at 4 squads. Facing down Gutrencha, I wound up with my squads constantly falling over, so I kept having to leg it. This kept me on my toes and constantly moving my units around to not get killed. In comparison in Retribution, I usually had tens of squads deployed and didn't feel that need to leg it all the time in the off-chance that I was running low on units, because I could just bring in new units from my HQ and revive my Hero Units at full health for some Requisition.

And there's also the whole matter of the Final Boss for the three Dawn of War II campaigns. Dawn of War II (original)'s Final Boss really was a disappointment, but there was still the need to move around because, ya know, you only had four squads+Angelos. Chaos Rising went all the way on the other end, where I had to constantly retreat my units and use their abilities as much as I could because Ulkair did so much damage and had so much health. A little bit extreme of a Final Boss for Chaos Rising, but it gave me a real challenge. Then, with Retribution's Final Boss, there was a real lack of that sense of danger, or even the need to move around, because I had like a hundred units and my Super Unit all deployed, so all I had to do was just dakka him to death. Even less of a challenge than the original's Final Boss if you ask me.

I'm not saying that Retribution's campaign is bad, because it's far from bad. It just isn't quite as difficult as I had gotten used to from the previous two games. I think that the whole bringing in mook squads thing was helpful to rookies, but to those of us who played the last two games, just made things a bit too easy. Also, maybe it's just me, but who else wants to know what happened to Force Commander Vanilla Ice after Chaos Rising aside from that one wargear drop?

Still need More Dakka, and it's about time to start a real WAAAAAGH.

[up] We'll probably get to see what happened to Force Commander Vanilium Ice in Dawn of War 3 (scheduled for release in 2013).

As for the campaign, I actually agree, and there's a good reason for it.

The engine that they built the singleplayer on was built for four-squad combat. Every boss encounter was balanced towards the idea of having your Force Commander and three other squads hanging around with various different abilities. The singleplayer was never meant to include other units.

That, and Retribution goes out of its way to break every hero as soon as they reach level 7 or so. When you have Diomedes' fully upgraded charge/Kayleth's airborne grenade spam/Eliphas' fully upgraded Mark of Khorne/Castor's Leman Russ airdrop and so forth, the game ends up being ridiculously easy, even the fight with the Land Raider wasn't really up to snuff.

That being said, Retribution's campaign was also the weakest overall. I still think the peak of the series, at least story-wise, was Chaos Rising, although Retribution's multiplayer is better.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.
