Damn, didn't realize that. Suddenly all the other movies that he wrote start to hit differently with that info in mind. He even wrote Cowboys & Aliens which became the basis of an Ancient Aliens episode.

The only way I accept Section 31 is that its a cheesy in universe work, like how you have all those media with historic domain characters kicking ass.

It's pretty obvious that it's a super downgraded version of whatever the original plans were, made basically only because Paramount realized how dumb it was to let a Michelle Yeoh project fall apart when she really likes playing the character.

[up] That. Especially after Everything Everywhere All At Once got her lots of fresh attention.

I've not seen S31 yet but now I have P+ again I'll probably get around to it. I can only assume it was more Trekky, or would have become so with a full series as it was originally intended rather than a movie.

I haven't seen it so can't say too much about the quality, but everything about the premise and trailers just felt like a producer demanded project and the creative team was stuck with a laundry list of things to include without rhyme or reason.

Watched the latest ep, Shuttle To Kenfori. Pretty great plot with great emotional beats from every side.

I feel for the klingon Bytha, who's life was inadvertedly ruined by both her Sa'Hut of a father and Mbenga denying her a way out of her dishonor, and ended up being eaten by a zombie horde.

Pike blowing up at Mbenga over learning the cure will turn Batel into a gorn hybrid and he didnt tell him was nice too.

Plus, I like Orteggas getting he own focus in terms of her recklessness getting calked out.

Huh. I figured The Borg would cover the Zombie trope. But I guess it has been almost 30 years since First Contact.

These guys definitely zombie harder. Also, both M'Benga and Ortegas have been caught in lies. Hell, M'Benga was caught in two. We'll have to wait and see how that turns out.

Just finished watching the latest episode and in hindsight they really shouldn't have done that Enterprise episode that explained why TOS Klingons don't have forehead ridges while future Klingons do and they should've kept the difference as a joke like in DS9. On the other hand, the treatment to Captain Batel's Gorn infection got me wondering if the end result would look like the Gorn from TOS.

I do like that Ortegas is finally getting her own storyline this season not to mention if the fallout from her insubordination would result in Sulu getting called up to the Enterprise.

Oof...I really don't like Pike's decisionmaking here. I can understand it, but really don't like it. Also...zombies just aren't that threatening here? Given weapons which kill in one shot and have essentially infinite ammo, the only way to make them a threat is to have the characters be deeply stupid, which I never like. And I'm afraid at the end, I'm left with Picard's voice echoing in my ears...the first duty of a starfleet officer is to the truth...unless that means my friends get in trouble, then nevermind. That's how it goes, right?

Yeah... in theory this episode is good but I'm really not sure I like it.

It's good that there are consequences for the klingon episode last season and that M'Benga came clean about what happened but no we're in the same situation except that now Pike is complicit after the fact in his crime.

I just want Batel to be cured. Technically it's better writing that they don't have a quick magic fix either in the first episode or this one but I don't like the story line or what it does to Pike either. Oh and once again, TRANSPORTER STASIS is a thing. Batel has unlimited time. I wouldn't bring it up but there was a plot point in both previous seasons of M'Benga using that option.

Ortegas, would Number One have penalised her if their plan had turned out to be needed? Her actions does fit with her previously trauma with klingons. Technically it's what I wanted but again... it's not very fun is it? Remember when SNW was going to be lighter softer, episodic adventures?

Either Batel is gonna die, or they break up, because I'm pretty sure Pike was single at the time of the TOS episode "The Menagerie," given how he ended up with Vina.

Alright, review of each episode:

  • Hegemony II: Not as strong as the first episode, likely because they had set up such an impossible scenario as the cliffhanger that they couldn't help but involve a lot of contrivances in order to get a mostly satisfactory resolution. La'an gets transport codes for all the kidnapped colonists in the pods so that Enterprise can beam everyone to safety, while also not having to represent 100 people on screen. Scotty, Pel and Uhura devise the fake sun option that handily pushes all the Gorn back to their homeworld, but too many One In A Million Chance strategies like this get old after a while. It generally coasts on there just being a lot going on, but I think it's a testament to the quality of the show and the performances that the A, B and C plots are solid enough on their own, as well that each delves into the Competence Porn where Star Trek is at its best. I liked that Chapel was out of her element without M'Benga around, while also directly acknowledging Spock is not a doctor but as science officer he can still provide options and advise. Likewise Uhura, Scotty and Pel work together to figure out the quirks of Gorn technology and the radiation shifts. Cast Speciation is always preferable to Omnidisciplinary Scientist.
  • Wedding Bell Blues: Best I can say is the episode is rather cute, but isn't as outlandish as it should have been for a Trelane/Q episode homage. Where's the mariachi band!? I do like that the show is willing to have broader comedy, but it's also relying on Spock being at the center of it. Obviously Vulcans can be hilarious but this episode starts using the Abrams films method of "Vulcans are just stoic humans", which contrasts how this show previously showed Vulcans as communicating with the tiniest expression rather than quick outbursts. The Wedding Planner had some potential, but moments like turning Korby into a dog should have been the entire episode instead of insisting on the wedding going through.
  • Shuttle to Kenfori: Batel's Gorn infection is starting to dominate the season and may not be very good in the long run. I was hoping for something that was really off-the-books, paying a local freighter captain to drop them off, but it was instead a fairly standard away team adventure with a ship conflict preventing an easy rescue. I'm not too fond of M'Benga being Starfleet Rambo in the first place, but I think resolving questions from "Under the Cloak of War" is serviceable. I did like the Bytha said that Dak'Rah is considered a war criminal to the Klingons as well, not just a traitor, which implies Klingons even have a concept of war crimes. The strongest part is Ortegas story with Una having to discipline her for disobeying orders. I get why Star Trek is Mildly Military but brushing off Cowboy Cop antics because of lucky fixes doesn't work for long in civilian organizations either, and the big confrontation between Una and Ortegas felt immensely believable.

Just saw the teaser for Starfleet Academy, and I am very intrigued. The jump to the 32nd century is what made me finally enjoy Discovery, so I'm glad to see more of this time-period. The most interesting thing in the teaser for me is what looks like a female Jem'hadar, in a *Starfleet uniform*. I've yet to see the final season of Discovery, so maybe it is explained there what happened to the Dominion, but either way, I'm very curious.

Here's a thread on bluesky about the characters on the show.

The one that intrigues me the most is the Klingon character, Jay'Den Kraag, who is training to a medical officer. Wonder what that means for the status of the Klingons in the 32nd Century...

Also, the Jem'Hadar character is named Lura Thok and she's a Jem'Hadar/Klingon hybrid. Presumably, the Jem'Hadar at some point mixed Klingon DNA with their genetics so they could reproduce naturally. Or maybe life just found a way.

There were at least a few Jem'Hadar in DS 9 who expressed a very strong desire to fight Klingons, which also had some undertones of admiration for them as fellow warriors. There was also a sense that they admired the Klingons for having strong pride as individuals, who fight mainly for their own sake. I could see the contact with the Alpha Quadrant species leading to cultural changes among the Jem'Hadar, including a desire to become a natural species. This development towards sexual reproduction might go hand in hand with some Jem'Hadar becoming infatuated with other warrior-species, like Klingons.

This makes me curious about what might happen if the Hirogen would come into contact with the Klingons and the Jem'Hadar?

A lot of almost human appearance species amongst the cadets. Which I'm normally irritable about given there's lots of visually striking star trek aliens who would benefit from further exploration, but returning to Betazoids for the first time since Deanna and her family were introduced in The Next Generation gets a lot of good will from me.

Was kinda hoping for a Betazoid redesign, but so it goes.

[up][up]Hmmm...as I don't particularly like Khan (either the original, sure, he was a brutal tyrant, but we're going to pretend that's okay—or the more modern, he was somehow actually a victim/servant/prisoner who fought his way free) and think Star Trek's take on eugenics/genetic engineering is pretty painful and I really don't want a rewriting of his history this looks like it's probably not for me.
