Can't you hold it by the barrel, gently lower it to the ground with one hand while holding your other hand high, and back away once it's laid softly on the ground? Or click the safety, while announcing that you're doing so?
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

When it comes to getting rid of a weapon, don't announce anything just do whatever he says to do as slowly as possible. Given how tense this situations are doing anything to startle anyone could get you shot by twenty people.
Well he's talking about WWII when the Chinese bomb pearl harbor and they commuted suicide by running their planes into the ship.

^^ And here I'll be teaching my kids the ins and outs of gun safety and proper operation including being able to field strip, clean, reassemble and fire an AKM rifle by the age of 10.
This also includes the Golden Rule of Firearms: Never point it at anything you don't intend to destroy.
^ Pretty low actually. There are very few gun models that will go off when dropped. Usually they are things like economy cost submachineguns firing from an open bolt or old pistol models like the P08 Luger.
