Not sure if the series would've been received worse, though the Unfortunate Implications would've shot through the roof.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!I have played through most of the second game and I generally like the gameplay. The story reads like bad fanfiction however. I could see the villain "plot twist" coming from a mile away and what was done with X bothers me. The rest of the series isn't raising my hopes in that regard.
As for how I would have reacted to X being the main villain as originally planned...Depends on how it was executed. It sounds like it would be better than what happened to him.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahThat may be why it was so obvious. Either way it was stupid and felt to me like it was supposed to be something surprising. From the moment I first saw him I went "Yep he's the villain". He didn't even get to say anything. Just his face says "MWUAHAHAH I AM EVIL OR WILL BE IN FIVE MINUTES!!!!" He was obvious and his "growth" was lame.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahI think the third and fourth games did a better job telling their stories than the first two. There were more dialogue cutscenes to more clearly explain what was going on. The better localization and dialogue editting helped too.
That said, the second game, while having a lot of That One Levels has some of my favorite music from the series, like Ice Brain and Departure, which kinda went on to become the de facto theme for the whole series.
My Megaman and MegaTen RPG LiveblogsI really don't get how this game has a reputation for difficulty *, but whatever. Kinda wish they went with X being the villain because that could have been pretty interesting, but the first game is the one I haven't played, so no big deal there either. These games were sort of the introduction to Mega Man for me, and I'm glad of it.
Eh?

I didn't care for how his death played out. Part of it is how lame Elpizo is and the fact that X was asleep and helpless. In the context of the story it makes sense I suppose but I just found it really lame. X is killed helpless by Obvious McVillain Pants. I think I would have preferred him being the villain as originally planned. Depending on how it was done it could have been neat. Much neater than what I've currently played anyway. I don't expect awesome story telling from the franchise but that was amazingly lame. At least we got Maverick Hunter X which was quite badass cutscene and movie wise.
My introduction to the Megaman franchise was Legends. My introduction to X and Zero came from somewhere else...a small glimpse of them somewhere. Not sure where. First game I played in the X series was 4 though the first game I played with X and Zero was Xtreme 2.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahYou have to play perfectly in those games. You have to go through it fast enough while (Only for 100% runners) getting the collectibles that will be Lost Forever if you don't get them on the 1st run through. And you can't get hit at all.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more! All 4 games are easy. It's the S-Ranks that are hard to achieve...and you need them to learn techniques.
ummm...Unfortunate Implications? Explain plz.
"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."But you become soo good at the game in the end.
I remember killing Omega without realizing that I didn't get hit once by the end. It's like levelling up without any actual changes happening to your character.
So why is X turning out evil Unfortunate Implications?

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."Easy? First playthrough, I wouldn't call any of the games easy. Especially the second one.
^Yeah some of the bosses are insane(Phoenix Magnion and 1st Craft come to mind). I thought MMZ 2's stages were rather difficult for the most part though, I still haven't beat Fefnir's. Lava + spikes + crush + annoying flail enemies on every corner = hell.
I remember spending 20 minutes trying to beat him. I ended up killing him with one life pellet left. Also, I was Rank A so he had that annoying thunderslam attack.

So how was your first experience with Aztec Falcon?

You got some dirt on you. Here's some more! How did you do against 1st Craft in 4? He was the worst for me. I spent like over an hour trying to beat him and failed, then next night I tried for about 20 minutes and finally managed to beat him. His laser from full screen is absurdly tough to dodge. I actually memorized his battle theme since he killed me so much lol.
Seems like 4's bosses gave me the hardest time overall. And then there was that douche who kicked me into a pit.

Been playing a lot of this lately. Although a bit frustrating and at times just downright evil, it's a load of fun and definitely some of the better GBA games out there, and probably my second favorite series of Megaman games, behind pre-6 X.
Best one IMO is MMZ 3, as the story is epic and gameplay noticeably improved over the previous two. Challenge wise, it's probably the easiest but considering this series' notorious difficulty that's not so much a bad thing as one may think. As for the one I enjoyed/enjoying the least, definitely MMZ 2 mostly due to the frustrating chain rod mechanics and the stage design which gets too happy with deathtraps(Fefnir's stage being ESPECIALLY guilty of this).
I always loved the designs the bosses got in this series. They look a bit odd compared to the X series but still awesome. Phoenix Magnion is probably my favorite out of the mythos reploids(the animal ones), fefnir my favorite out of the four guardians, and out of Weil's numbers Blazin Flizzard.
Though, I've always wondered what the reaction to the series would've been if X himself had been the primary villain of the first game like they originally planned. Think the series would've been received worse?
Oh, and the music, being Megaman, is excellent of course.
