I think an ugly subject is even better than a normal one, it reflects those examples where the woman creates an unnatural life form, and still treats it like her daughter.
That works when we have the story prepping us to sympathize with them despite their appearance, but not so well when it's just one picture that you'll likely never see in context for the rest of your life. Basically, the ugly picture relies on the text of the article to explain it, while a cute one would not.
I think it being ugly makes her affectionate pose more striking, and a "monstrosity" really hammers home that they are performing experiments. (Note that I have no idea what the "actual" context is, maybe I am way off.) Petting something cute might be more "just motherly" and not so much "motherly scientist". Maybe.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Anyone would act like that with a kitten, or a baby, but only a Motherly Scientist would act like this with a Half-kitten-half-baby.
We could probably find something from the later part of the movie, where it looks like on the Splice page image, but they don't wear labcoats that time, so there are less scenes that show the scientist part.

But not even most Motherly Scientists love half-kitten half-babies. Them loving something that is at first glance unlovable isn't really important to the trope. If anything, it's a bit distracting. The original image was of terrible quality, but I think the idea of cute children is a good one.
Lets see.. El Cazador De La Bruja has a great example of this trope with Ellis and Professor Schneider. There's a good scene where she's hugging him after he sincerely promises that he won't conduct any more experiments on her. Unfortunately, there's no good screenshots to show this. I probably could if I broke it up into two frames though.
I don't like the current one because I couldn't tell the scientist was a chick, the distinct lack of boobs or long hair threw me. I'm liking Splice 1 though.
Fight smart, not fair.BTW, I've got a bone to pick with the name of the trope, but I made a topic for that on the appropriate forum.
What about Professor giving the Power Puff Girls a hug? You see that fairly often in the series.
Crap. GIS gives me nothing for that. -_-

I looked. I need Brain Bleach now. Why?
Don't google Professor loves powerpuff girls. Just don't. I did find something that would work though. [1]

Yeah, that was why I like it. I don't like the anime one because it's entirely from the kids perspective that we are informed that she's motherly.
Fight smart, not fair.No one likes the anime one, that hasn't been the issue for a long while. The question is whether to settle with Splice or keep looking. I think the Power Puff Girls idea isn't a bad one.
