Well, at least she didn't torture them...on purpose.

It's a scientist doing an experiment on some little girl while looking friendly. The little girl is indicating affection toward her.

Haven't we had a thread on this?

Dr. Augustine from Avatar? (This is maybe a poor picture, but there may be better of the same character.)

[up] "It's a scientist doing an experiment on some little girl while looking friendly..." Oh yeah I totally got that :P

Other than the blue light, nothing in that image suggests that she's a scientist.

^Well, the little girl is strapped in to some device and the lady is wearing what looks like a lab coat, so I figured that made it fairly obvious.

That image is even worse than the one that's on the page at the moment.

Really not obviously a lab coat, somewhat not obviously "some device".

^I'll admit to the first one, but the thing on her head has wires coming out of it and has weird...stuff on the front.

The picture quality is pretty bad, so while those features may exist, they don't leap out at the viewer. I'm familiar with the work, and it's a pretty good example, but the picture is a different story.

If it's been chosen by a previous thread though, then it's been chosen. Is that actually the case?

Hang on a second. I'm doing an improved crop of that scene.

A big problem is the lighting, really.

Here are two possible improved versions that I hope will at least make the headgear clearer and the text more legible.

Does anyone who is not familiar with the work think that's a good image?

I don't think that change helped much, sorry.

I don't think it's perfect by any means. However, I can't think of/haven't seen anything better and I'm almost positive we've had this thread before.

^Didn't think so. Just giving it a shot.

I'm only familiar with the main work rather than the spinoff that the image comes from, and I can hardly see much significant improvement if you change it.

I technically watched it but I don't remember it. I thought that it's better than nothing, but we could always find one that works with a single picture, and more clues.

How about Splice [1] [2]

Article: "Frequently feeling compassion for the test subjects ... the motherly scientist is usually the first to ask that the test subjects be given a humane treatment."

[up][up] I like that.

[down] Because the article doesn't have a laconic description, just trying to help :P

Well scientists tend to be assholes in To Aru Majutsu No Index.

I don't know about the ones in Railgun.

^She's perhaps one of two exceptions between the two.

But again, the Splice ones are both better.

I don't really like the Splice one because the thing is pretty ugly. While technically that's not relevant to the trope, it's hard to instantly generate the sort of sympathy for it that's at the heart of the trope.

I'd accept it, but I'd prefer to leave it on the table while continuing to look.

[up] Yeah, maybe something not so fantastic? A scientist petting lab rats, or something.
