My public school history classes certainly talked about the cotton gin. Before that, slaves were mostly growing rice and indigo and that wasn't very profitable IIRC.

So, we all agree that minority experience, as the way the hands that built America joined this country, is something that should be taught to the next generations? Also, I think it could be spun in a way that makes everyone happy: instead of phrasing it as "this is what our mean white ancestors have done to the poor sad rainbow people" make it "this is how men and women from all over the world escaped corrupt, repressive, stagnated, evil countries and came over here, and through their hard work and sweat and tears they helped build this wonderful country and earned their place in it as worthy proud citizens, because what matters to this great nation is not the color of your skin or the roundenss of your ass, it's how much you burned that skin and busted that ass in contributing to its greatness and-" wait, I'm going into full caricature right now...

^ Yes, except maybe a bit less romanticized. I think it would be interesting to incorporate other types of "Minority Experience" besides race too; most notably religious and sexual minorities.

Definitely. I heard being a Catholic wasn't a picnic here for a while.

And the Atheists are still undergoing a "minority experience".

I think I remember reading something that said that Whitney was horrified at what his creation caused.

Yeah, slavery was just too unprofitable and dying until the cotton gin was designed.

I suppose that's why the Founding Fathers expected it to just die out over time without causing civil war.

Thus slavery remaining in the US as long as it did was owing to a case of Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!?

Yeah, it wasn't until more recently that they were able to automate the cotton hoovers. And they have six digit price tags.
