Personal gateway albums or gateways for other people?

Yeah, as mcb just said, it's the latter, with a specific emphasis on answering other people's requests for gateways on a certain band or genre. I almost feel like "personal gateway albums" could make an interesting thread on it's own though. Maybe I'll go start it. Maybe not. Edit: wait - there kinda is such a thing already.

To keep on topic:

What's a good of Montreal album to start with?

Gonna agree with JHM on either Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies or Satanic Panic in the Attic... to clarify why it could go either way, they're one of those bands who had a New Sound Album and then stuck with it. Basically if your reason for wanting to get into them is "I like a couple of Elephant 6 bands and I know that Of Montreal were one of the more well known ones" then it's Coquelicot, but if it's more like "I saw that crazy Brothers Chaps-directed music video and I liked it", then Satanic Panic is probably the better bet. Basically Coqueloicot = weird Baroque Pop, Satanic Panic and onward = equally weird synth-heavy indie-funk.

Any one got any Dubstep to recommend. I've only heard and liked Mord Fustang's song "A New World". Beyond that I am clueless.

Along the lines of what you posted: NiT GriT. He played local to me recent, awesome stuff, very emotive style.

His stuff is free on his website.

And Captain Panic!, but his stuff can be hard to find.

In general (*Not quite like what you posted*): Burial, Vex'd, Distance, Scuba & Rusko

Did you just mention Rusko in the same breath as Burial?

Yeeeees. I wasn't trying to claim that they were equally good or anything.

And that list is pretty much in order of quality from greatest to least.

Not saying anything about quality (I've barely listened to Rusko). It's just that Rusko is a brostep producer and the others are not, creating a sort of Last of These Is Not Like the Others situation.

His work covers alot of ground, Brostep is more "Take Rusko's womp-womp-iest stuff and make it womp-ier".

In his own words:

brostep is sort of my fault, but now I've started to hate it in a way...It's like someone screaming in your face for an hour...you don't want that.

I really want to get into Cloudkicker, but I'm not sure which album I should start with. Any recommendations?

I like Beacons best; it seems his most focused work yet.

Ísn't Red Medicine a fairly atypical Fugazi album?

[up] Yeah, it's one of my favorites, but it's sort of their "experimental" album, what with all the weird intros and songs like "Combination Lock" and "Version".

I would think 13 Songs would be a better choice.

I'd say either 13 Songs or Repeater. 13 Songs has a lot of what are thought of as their classic songs *

, but imho it doesn't hang together as an album as well as Repeater does, and isn't quite as well-produced... The former makes sense because 13 Songs is really a compilation of two EP's, albeit ones released within a short time of each other.

Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada is a great start for post-rock.

It's a long shot, but does anyone listen to 50's and / or 60's french pop and rock and have any artists, albums (compilation or otherwise), songs etc to reccomend? Basically I've been told by a friend that I can DJ his wedding provided I can put together around 90 minutes of it. I've gotten started by picking through a compilation called Get The Go!!!, but I need some more. I want it all sung in French, but Translated Cover Versions are cool - I do kind of like the idea of someone hearing a bunch of unfamiliar songs in a foreign language and suddenly recognizing "Hit The Road Jack".
