Public Enemy's bassist is also good.
Mike Watt is a pretty cool bassist, so maybe The Minutemen?
See also fIREHOSE
(not to be confused with Firehouse, who are a completely unrelated Hair Metal band that get listed as performing the song at the start of the video for some reason)

Looking for recommendations in:
- Impressionism (That's not Debussy)
- Contemporary Classical from the 70s onwards (doesn't have to be avant-garde though)
- Minimalism
- Expressionism
- Neoclassicism that isn't Stravinsky
- 21st century classical
- Spectralism
- Noise
- Stockhausen
- Drum and Bass
- Paul Hindemith
- Trip Hop
- Ska
- Sludge Metal
- Third Wave Ska Revival
- Math Rock/Math Metal
- Post-hardcore
- Chicago Blues
- Avant-prog
- Doom Metal
- Black metal
- Symphonic black Metal
- Folk Metal
- Bela Fleck (Whoever recommended that live album, I got that, but I want more)
- Grindcore
- Post Metal (I know about Pelican and Russian Circles and that's about it).
- Bossa Nova
- Jazz (I know a lot of the regulars, but if you know of more obscure jazz, I'd love to hear it)
- Jazz Fusion
- Rap (The onyl thing I really listen to is Public Enemy)
I guess that's enough for now. Some of what I listed I'm somewhat familiar with, but not enough to really know the genre.
Did the Thrash recommendations help, JHM?
Imagine Rakan applying Calling Your Attacks to doing paperwork.~Anarchy Rakan for the hell of it COMMISSION THIS BRIDGE!~EHKRap:
- The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury
- Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
- Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor
- Nas - Illmatic
- Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
- Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
- The Roots - Phrenology
- Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
- OutKast - Stankonia
- Sadistik - The Balancing Act
Trip-Hop:
- Unkle - Psyence Fiction
- Gorillaz - Demon Days
- Aim - Cold Water Music
Hell yeah, I'm going to try it again, since it absolutely didn't work on the Electronic thread
I listened to Pendulum's Hold Your Colour and liked.. around half of it. I wasn't hooked on "mean" souding stuff like Slam
and Fasten Your Seatbelt
, but the more melodic material like Plasticworld
and the title song
hit the spot.
Also noteworthy is that my interest on the genre came from certain VGM that caught my attention; this
, this
(although not really electronic until 1:54) and even this
come to mind.
Recommendations anyone?
No regret shall pass over the threshold!- Post-metal: I think Streetcleaner by Godflesh is the Ur-Example, Through Silver in Blood and Times of Grace by Neurosis are the Trope Makers, and Oceanic and Panopticon by Isis are the Trope Codifiers. All are recommended strongly.
- Sludge metal: Mostly overlaps with post-metal (which is occasionally referred to as atmospheric sludge metal). Check out Acid Bath, Down and Eyehategod; other than that, I'm out of suggestions.
- Math metal: Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere by Meshuggah. If that may include mathcore, Miss Machine by The Dillinger Escape Plan and We Are the Romans by Botch.
- Grindcore: From Enslavement to Obliteration by Napalm Death, Terrifyer by Pig Destroyer.
- Post-hardcore: I would recommend Thrice's Vheissu for a more modern vision of the genre; not knowledgeable of the originals yet.
- Black metal: Filosofem by Burzum, In the Nightside Eclipse by Emperor.
- Trip-hop: Kitsune forgot Massive Attack. Their first three albums are classic. I guess Portishead's Dummy should be also recommended, but I've hardly listened to it myself.

Doom has quite a few sub-subgenres that sound completely different to each-other, so rather than painstakingly sort out each genre individually I'll just post this big list:
- Saint Vitus — self-titled, Hallows Victim and Born Too Late.
- Trouble — Psalm 9. I'd recommend more, but this is the only Trouble album I'm all that familiar with.
- Cathedral — Forest of Equilibrium, The Ethereal Mirror and The Carnival Bizarre.
- Candlemass — Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall and Ancient Dreams.
- Pagan Altar — Volume 1 and The Lords of Hypocrisy.
- Solitude Aeturnus — Into the Depths of Sorrow and Beyond the Crimson Horizon.
- Reverend Bizarre — In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend and II: Crush the Insects.
- Electric Wizard — Dopethrone, Come My Fanatics... and Witchcult Today.
- Paradise Lost — Lost Paradise and Gothic.
- My Dying Bride — Turn Loose the Swans, The Angel and the Dark River, Like Gods of the Sun and A Line of Deathless Kings.
- Anathema — Serenades and The Silent Enigma.
- Sleep — Sleep's Holy Mountain and Dopesmoker.
- Katatonia — Dance of December Souls and Brave Murder Day.
- Bethlehem — Dark Metal.
- Warning — Watching from a Distance.
- Winter — Into Darkness.
- diSEMBOWELMENT — Transcendence into the Peripheral.
- Thergothon — Stream from the Heavens.
- Skepticism — Stormcrowfleet and Alloy.
- Funeral — Tragedies, In Fields of Pestilent Grief and From These Wounds.
- Ahab — The Call of the Wretched Sea.
- Earth — Earth 2 - Special Low Frequency Version. HEX: Or Printing in the Infernal Method and The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull are also great, but they're not doom (or even metal).
- Sunn O))) — Black One and Monoliths and Dimensions.
There's a shitload of other albums I could recommend, but it's best to stop here before this list becomes any more monstrous.
Sludge is a spinoff from doom metal, so a lot of these could go on the above doom list:
- Melvins — Bullhead, Houdini
- Crowbar — self-titled, Odd Fellows Rest and Sonic Excess in its Purest Form.
- Eyehategod — Dopesick and Take as Needed for Pain.
- Acid Bath — When the Kite String Pops and Paegan Terrorism Tactics.
- Buzzov*en — To a Frown. (Only Buzzov*en album I've checked out.)
- Grief — Come to Grief and Miserably Ever After.
- Down — ''NOLA'.
- Dystopia — Human = Garbage. (There are two release by this name, an EP and a compilation album that contains the EP and a bunch of other stuff.)
- Soilent Green — Pussy Soul, Sewn Mouth Secrets and Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction.
- High on Fire — Death is This Communion and Snakes for the Divine.
- Iron Monkey — Our Problem.
- Burning Witch — Crippled Lucifer.
- Bongzilla — Gateway and Amerijuanican.
- Weedeater — ...And Justice for Y'all and Jason...the Dragon.
- YOB — The Illusion of Motion and The Unreal Never Lived.
- Corrupted — El Mundo Frio.

Thrash: Go for the early records of the Big four. Each offers different things. I'd say start with Megadeth's stuff, but that's just me be being a Droog.
To Start, check out Peace Sells but who's buying then either Killing is my business and Business is good or Rust in Piece, then get Countdown or So Far so good..So what (with countdown, this is where they went from Thrash to a more straight foward style, but it's still a good listen to).
For Anthrax, get the albums Spreading the disease through Persistence of time.
For Slayer, everyone mentions Reign in Blood, but there's also South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss and Hell awaits
For stuff that's not the big four: How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today by Suicidal tendencies is a good crossover thrash album. Beneath the Remains, Arise and Schizophrenia by Sepultura are good mixes of thrash and death metal. The Legacy and New world Order by Testament are good records too. Check out the Sadus discography too. There's some overlap with Technical Death metal, but it's all good stuff.
For bands that I don't have albums to recommend for in particular (mostly becuase I haven't gotten around to buying them):
Also, Metal Church's Self titled album has some thrash influences, but also a lot more NWOBHM sound to it.
Edit: Also, check out Coroner's early stuff if you want thrash. Their later stuff is where they started experimenting, so you'd probably enjoy that too, but for just trash, it's their first albums.
Edit 2:Damn, did I get ninja'd.
