Deadly Premonition, I have to say. I really don't like how it begins. Some annoying unskippable dream sequences that double as partial tutorials, and the first Dark World, which is rather boring and a little annoying to navigate, along with your first Press X to Not Die situation. Not long after that, the quest where you need to fetch the correct key for the cop, and every time you get the wrong one, he goes into a lengthy discussion about a species of squirrel.

But once the game picks up, it becomes a lot more fun to just explore, the fighting becomes better, the story gets better, and it overall becomes a lot more interesting. I really like it.

The thing with Metroid Other M is that all the exposition is at the beginning and end. This makes the beginning very slow. The fact that after the Diffusion Beam you get nothing for AGES, then you do the fucking bullshit no varia suit thing. After that and Goyagma, it finally gets tolerable.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Who actually saw the poster at a Game Stop before hearing or seeing anything else about it without thinking "wow, something about this game seems boring in terms of a non-cute Harvest Moon?"

  • [down]IMO it's because of how the gameplay starts.

Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors gets my vote. Characters and circumstances seem so stereotypical at first, but eventually pretty much every single first impression you had will be brutally shattered. Opinions of each character will change drastically as you keep playing.

On the note of Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors, to the degree one can call it a game, Umineko no Naku Koro ni starts incredibly slowly.

The very first Dragon Quest does not have a good first impression. Go outside and poke The Goomba to death by mashing the A button until it dies, no strategy involved. Repeat this until you gain a few levels. No, you have to do this with a pointed stick and cheap clothing as armor. No, we're not going to warn you that the enemies get stronger up north.

That all coupled with terribly translated dialogue and a very stiff and annoying command menu system used to open doors, go up stairs, and talk among other things make the NES version horrible to gaze upon at a glance. It's not horrible, but it hasn't aged well at all... The GBC version fixed most of that though.

World Of Tanks. You start with a tankette which moves like an old man with arthritis with a side helping of osteoporosis, fire a peashooter that can't hit the broad side of a barn from inside the barn and has the consistency of tissue paper. It gets a lot better 3 tiers or 4 hours in.

Final Fantasy IV - Final Fantasy II in North America. My reasons why?

1. The cut scenes are REALLY cheesy and most of the time you're like WTF THIS ISN'T FINAL FANTASY. 2. You lost the character creation system. 3. One of your characters already starts out super powerful. The purpose of Final Fantasy is to build up your characters. 4. The whole No Export for You thing with Japan's Final Fantasy 2 + 3 made me think that this game would be a lot better because it took so damn long. But then it got better. So when I got Final Fantasy II I didn't play it until 6 months after I got it.

The first Robopon game. After awhile you get used to the menu slowness.

I loved KHII's beginning. It was a good environment and Roxas was an awesome character. Plus the Roxas vs Axel fight was great. It was especially sad after you've played 358/2 Days .

KHI's opening was way worse. When I first played KH, when I was young, I didn't really know what the game was about, but it looked cool. I started it up, expecting awesome, and I remember getting stuck finding one of the materials on the island. I quit after that. I went back a few years later and tried again, loving the whole game. Now I've played and beaten every KH game released.

Everyone, say it with me: Game Boy Advance Video. What a ridiculously awesome concept wasted on two episodes per cartridge and only releasing Dreamworks movies, all this in a relatively short lifespan for the GBA Vid series.

Suikoden V also has a fairly long opening sequence with lots of plot and relatively little action. However, it ultimately works because it takes the time to let the player become honestly attached to the Prince's family and friends. You already know something is going to happen to them (especially if you already played Suikoden II), but that doesn't make the fact that You Can't Thwart Stage One any easier to bear. Especially since it's written well enough (and II only offered a few scraps of information) that even if you recognize the Hope Spot for what it is...

Dragon Quest VII has a similarly slow opening sequence. However, in my opinion, it frankly isn't written as well. Kiefer and Maribel both initially come off as Spoiled Brats taking advantage of your Heroic Mime's inability to say no, and it takes a long time before you encounter any enemies — there's even an entire dungeon to plod through before you fight your first slime!

That said, it's also one of my favorite Dragon Quest games, much like how SV is easily my favorite Suikoden. However, overall I feel the opening of SV ultimately adds to the experience, while DQVII just makes for a bad first impression.

Pretty much all the X Universe games fall into this category.

It's a nasty combination of Quicksand Box, With This Herring and depending on installment, either no tutorial or a hopelessly inadequate tutorial. Even reading the 200 page manual will barely get you to grips with the mechanics of the game (fan guides are 2 to 3 times as many pages, despite being far more dense in content than the included manual).

But, if you persevere then there is a truly vast universe with incredible scope for you to just screw with in so very many ways.

I second those from the beginning of the thread about Taris from KOTOR. It was a blast the first time, but it's so tedious to replay after that. Plus the fact that, unless you want to seriously screw yourself over later in the game, you shouldn't let yourself gain more than a couple levels while your there.
