Tales Of The Abyss, I've had several people trash the game because they couldn't stand how Luke acted in the first 6 or so hours of the game. Even after I told them that it doesn't last.
Sorry, I can't hear you from my FLYING METAL BOX!The beginning of The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall sucked. You start in a large brown dungeon where everything is trying to kill you, with crappy weapons, to face off against at least 10 DemonicSpiders. At least one of them shoots fireballs at you and is invulnerable to iron and steel weapons, which are the only kinds of weapons you have at the moment. The default controls are clunky and outdated, and there's one part that can be a Guide Dang It!. After that, you have complete freedom, so it becomes much more fun.
KOTOR 1 has an absolutely boring beginning. Funnily enough, I rather like KOTOR 2's, or at least I don't dread starting a new game over it.
-Glare's at the hater's of KH 2's beginning-
Oh man, I am so seconding Ostagar.
I love the origins, and they hold up even on replays, but Ostagar...
It's pretty good the first time around, but after it is just boring. There aren't even any minor choices to make!
"The world ends with you. If you want to enjoy life, expand your world. You gotta push your horizons out as far as they'll go."Funnily enough, I actually liked KH 2's Prologue. It was different and made Roxas a pretty sympathetic character.
Personally, I'd say that Twilight Princess has a pretty boring start. It takes a looong time just to get to the first temple, and even longer for the adventure to begin proper. Though, once it got going, it became my second favorite Zelda title.
Any Zelda game really, but in particular the 3-D games not named Wind Waker. Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess are the worst offenders of this. Twilight Princess is the series' worst offender of having long stretches of boring, but mandatory shit in general really. That is for another day though.

If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahOh how did I forget that...Kingdom Hearts 2's opening was my favorite portion of the game. I rather liked Roxas and the shit happening as well as the environment they lived in. The first game's opening was stupid.

I much preferred Roxas wondering what the hell is happening him and trying to figure it out than So Ri Kai trying to build a suicidal raft that could only result in death.
And we got Roxas vs Axel, which is utterly wonderful.
So, I nominate KH 1's opening. The very opening with the Station of Awakening is cool, but after that it turns right around. At least I got to beat the hell out of Tidus whenever I wanted. It takes until Night of Fate starts up for it to get great again, and that could be anyway from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on how you play.

Against all tyrants.Any Zelda opening that requires tons of boring tasks before you get your sword gets my vote.
In other words, Majora's Mask, some of Ocarina Of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess.

ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.I actually like the opening to KHII. I didn't think it was all that boring, and I didn't mind playing as Roxas for a bit.
I only minded Ostagar on my second playthrough. Didn't mind it so much on my first.
Deus Ex gets better? Maybe I'll give it another try. I just couldn't stand the beginning.
It took me several hours before I could get into Fallout 3. Basically, once I no longer had to worry about running out of ammo, my weapons breaking, and dying ridiculously quickly, I had a lot of fun.
"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."Let's view a checklist, shall we?
- Complete reboot of the story with little acknowledgement of what came before.
- The only two returning characters are Ryu and Ken.
- Slower compared to Street Fighter II and Alpha, along with lack air-blocking, tag-teaming, and simple Super Move commands that were becoming all the rage in the Capcom Vs Whatever series.
- "Who the fuck is this Dudley faggot?"
Eventually, the series grew into becoming one of the greatest and beloved fighting games of all time, still played competitively to this day. And that Dudley guy grew so popular that fans demanded his presence in Street Fighter IV.
Etrian Odyssey. Love these games, but can't seem to get anyone else to try them out because:
- They don't have drop-dead gorgeous, semi-realistic models for the characters.
- The art looks too 'kiddy'.
- The challenge turns them off.
...Or am I misunderstanding the question, and it's supposed to be about MY first impression of a game I eventually loved...?
Really? I'd have to say that FFVII had one of the more brilliant openings in the series. A massive city, unlike any seen before in the series. Then you're suddenly thrust into the middle of it. A action filled, fast paced section. What's going on? Who are these guys? Who's Shinra? What are we doing here. They throw in quite a few exciting questions that make you want more.
Another good thing is, no boring tutorial, no over long opening cutscene, you're thrown into the action right away.

I believe it's both, but more towards games that you loved but thought had terrible/boring opening segments.
I'd agree on Etrian Odyssey, but I've never played past the first stratum in II or III, so I can't say it gets better after the beginning (though my problem isn't the challenge, but having to draw the map. It makes the game feel stuttery to me).

*clicks Wick for Etrian Odyssey*
Super Paper Mario started off with some Exposition, followed by some more exposition...and then even more...boring...
Once the actual Action RPG/2D Platforming started up, I loved it. I just wish it hadn't taken so long to get the story set up.
Ditto with Metal Gear Solid 3. I was expecting the cutscenes, having beaten MGS 1 and 2, but...wow, seriously?
The What? *blinks*
@Pata Hikari: This was when I was younger and could care less about opening cutscenes. I like to be eased ito the game. It didn't do that at all. Suddenly having a battle with no indicator of what to do isn't acceptable when you don't have an actual manual available. Or if you're too young to read one. I'd rather have an optional tutorial available. And the last Final Fantasy game I played before VIII was One. So there's a reason why it left me confused.
And to be fair, I want to try the game again, but I can't find the first disc.(I have the manual, game case, and second disc only)
Quest 64 threadMetroid Other M. Once you look past the "story", it's actually a very tight and very fun game.

Agreed BG2's start is only tedious on replays. The first time through, Château Irenicus is a brilliant use of a story's setting to tell you volumes about a character before you even really meet him.
