I wasn't all that impressed with it, not sure why.

All I'm hoping for is that they'll go for a more conceptual direction like they meant to for Cross (judging by the lyrics for "Civilization" one could assume they will) and that they won't hire any more manifestations of overall terribleness to do vocals.

Apparently Uffie only did vocals for them because Busy P insisted on her appearing on the album.

I just found out that Brian Eno's new album comes out in two days. That's a good thing.

Mika supposedly has one coming before the end of the year, called The Origin of Love. He described it as a mix between Fleetwood Mac and Daft Punk and there's apparently some french tracks. HELL YES. I'm fully expecting something similar to Freelance Whales, but in french. YES PLEASE.

[up] Neither did I. But if anyone could pull it off, it'd be him. Or possibly Gaga. Either way, it's bound to at least be interesting.

Neo-Classical/Film Score composer Dustin O'Halloran + Adam Witzie from Stars Of The Lid = A Winged Victory For The Sullen, who will be releasing a self-titled record in September, through Kranky (same label as Tim Hecker) and Erased Tapes (same label as Olafur Arnalds).

The above link has a stream of one of the tracks, A Steep Hill Of Vicodin Tears. It's absolutely beautiful. If the whole album is of that quality, which Drowned In Sound suggests it will be, then it will, without a doubt, float effortlessly into my top five albums of the year like a single autumn leaf on a gentle breeze.

Tracklisting:

  1. We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
  2. Requiem for the Static King Part One
  3. Requiem for the Static King Part Two
  4. Minuet for a Cheap Piano Number Two
  5. Steep Hills of Vicodin Tears
  6. A Symphony Pathetique
  7. All Farewells Are Sudden

From Erased Tapes' Soundcloud page:

... In ‘Requiem For The Static King Part One’ – created in memory of the untimely passing of Mark Linkous – they have taken the age-old idea of a string quartet and then shot it out of a cannon to reveal exquisite new levels of sonic bliss. Of the 13 minute track ‘Symphony Pathétique’, Wiltzie says ‘after almost 20 years of struggling to create interesting ambient drone music, I feel like I have finally figured out what I am doing’. Notable guest musicians include Icelandic cellist Hildur Gudnadottir, as well as Erased Tapes label comrade Peter Broderick on violin. A Winged Victory For The Sullen is not a side project – it is the future of the late night record you have always dreamed of.

To say that I am excited would be an understatement on a par with Leonidas saying to the Spartans, "I'm not gonna lie here guys, I think we're a bit outnumbered."

ST. VINCENT UPDATE:

New album is called Strange Mercy. Release date is September 12th. Cover looks like this, and after some sort of Twitter based gimmick requiring followers to tweet '#strangemercy' in order to 'unlock' a track from the album, the track Surgeon has been posted to the website http://www.strangemercy.com/.

It's pretty odd. Even by St. Vincent's standards.

Neurosis have debuted a new song at the Maryland Deathfest. I can't hear shit from this video, but I'm just gonna hope that the extra year (or two?) along with the usual three this album took will result in a work on the level of The Eye of Every Storm rather than that of Given to the Rising.

Video for new track Cruel has just been posted on Pitchfork. It's pretty awesome, and the video is possibly one of the creepiest things I've seen in a while.

Madness have been playing a few songs from their next album at festivals lately. They sound pretty good, so if they get the next album out this year it might be better than the last one.

Nobody's probably heard of Madness here, though, and not their most recent album.

[up] False! I have a soft spot for Madness, as I was in a ska band in college. The Liberty Of Norton Folgate was also the best thing they've released this side of 1984.

Everything Saeglopur has mentioned on this page has sent me into dazed conniptions of, "O dear god I want that right now."

And yet... still no cable connection or disposable income.

The Liberty Of Norton Folgate was also the best thing they've released this side of 1984.

The Liberty of Norton Folgate was one of the best British albums of the last decade and all anyone wants to hear is "Baggy Trousers".

Nothing wrong with that, though. "Baggy Trousers" is lots of fun. It was the song that got me interested in Madness.
