(This is my first thread in World Building, so if it should go somewhere else feel free to move it.)

I've been addicted to Actraiser since the first second I gave it a play. It's one of my all-time favorite games, and I'd like to make a fan sequel/reboot/whatever for it. I figured I'd throw up my ideas on here, solicit advice and ideas, and so on. There's a good chance that this game won't actually be finished, but I still love just getting to think about how to create worlds like these, and if it does get made, then that would be absolutely fantastic.

If you've never played Actraiser, the basic setup is this: You are a god. Your world has been ravaged by an evil anti-god called Tanzra, leaving you with no followers to draw power from. You retreat to your palace in the sky and rest for a long time, when your angel assistant wakes you and encourages you to take up your sword and return to resurrect your world. You fly down to the surface and hack monsters to bloody pieces in classic side-scrolling SNES platforming goodness. After defeating the boss, it becomes your job to help guide your people and lead them to survive and fight against the monsters that threaten them. As homes are rebuilt and livelihoods restored, you regain the strength you once had and are now able to press on and fight foes too strong for your people to deal with, in a second sidescrolling level. Repeat this pattern five times, in lands controlled by stronger foes, and then slay Tanzra once and for all.

I want to keep this basic pattern, but I want to develop both the sidescrolling and simulation parts more. I'd like for the player to be able to train and create armies, solve puzzles more interesting than 'take item to this area', and more. I have ideas for how your followers will work, what kinds of weapons and magic you'll be able to use, and so on. I'll post those as I go.

My work on my habitat sim has gotten me interested in this again. I'm going to start scheduling different days to work on this and the sim, although I'm not sure how just yet. Also, I won't be combining the two, the sim will be more complex than necessary for this game.

A bit more on what I'm planning with this:
*Seven continents/countries/stages/whatever: As with the original game, the player does a sidescroller stage, kills a miniboss, leads his people to prosperity, does another sidescroller, kills the boss, repeat until all lands are free of evil.

  • The ability to watch over and provide for your people, expanded from the original. Encourage your followers to build different structures, grow food and mine for metal, and train to become soldiers in your army, among other things. Your followers can interact with you as well: They can pray to give you strength, give you offerings, and ask you questions about the world they live in.
  • Multiple weapons, spells. and skills to use in the fight to resurrect the world. You could use the two-handed sword from Actraiser, or the sword and shield from the second game, or maybe two swords, or an axe, or a bow and arrow...
