You can be in a Fireteam with your frieds, which is a group of one to three Guardians (Maybe four is possible, I don't know) for the whole game. I think the only thing with random matchmaking is the public events.
Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.http://www.bungie.net/en/News/News?aid=11464
The leading rumour (based on what an "anonymous bungie employee" said on reddit, so take with a massive grain of salt) is that Marty wanted more money, which caused an argument between him and the board and led to him being fired.
In any case, it is true that Marty was already really well paid, and that Jason Jones has suggested in the past that he resents the amount of influence Marty has over the games they make just by being pretty much their only composer.

Does the hype around this game seem big enough to justify that budget?
Holy crap, thats more than what Avatar cost ._.;
Yeah, this isn't going to make money to justify that budget. Seriously, what the heck, whats this insanity with over bloating game budget? Games made in old days seem like children's allowance in comparison -_-;
Activision seems to think that you can make anything succeed if you pump enough money into it <_<

I've finally taken an interest in this title. It looks really impressive from what I've seen. What's attracted me the most is the Hunter and the Hand Cannon. I like what I've seen about customizations, the speeder bikes, night/day cycles and weather effects. Destiny just looks like it'll be really fun to play.
But there is something I realized. When I tried to tell my girlfriend about this game, I couldn't think of anything that makes this all that unique from other, similar games. Most of the things I've observed about the game have been done before. Granted, this seems to do those things very well, but when I think about it, Destiny doesn't seem quite as revolutionary.
FPS MM Os already exist, other games have night and day and weather as well as character customization. The speeder bikes are cool, but nothing new either. It just seems like Destiny is combining all these things together into one massive box, and with a really big budget to make it all good.
That aside, there are some things that I'm curious about when it comes to the exploration. Supposedly you can traverse a lot of ground per planet, but what I want to know is what exactly is there to encounter. Will you find NP Cs to interact with, to gain new missions and such? Can you discover hidden treasures on your own? I'm actually kind of worried that these big open environments are just going to be empty and amount to little more than interconnected maps/levels for fighting in. I'm sure it will still be fun, but right now I kind of doubt it will have the kind of content I'd expect from an adventure/sandbox game.
I believe the free roaming mode is called patrol. I really want this mode to be a rewarding experience, as much as going on missions or doing the campaign, and not just pointless wandering through empty environments with the occasionally enemy encounter. Exploration is probably what I like most when it comes to MM Os. I know Destiny isn't a pure MMO, but it's something I would like.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to creating a Gunslinger Hunter regardless. Unless I get an Xbox One for my birthday, I think I'll be playing it on my old 360 for a while. One last question, but do previous gen and next gen players play together or separately? I'm assuming separately.
I like the world they made. The bright colour palette's pretty refreshing and it looks pretty fun, humorous and immersive too. Also the Fallen are definitely my fave enemy race. Four-armed space pirates, man.
What is it if not an MMO though, exactly? I'm not an MMO person.
EDIT: Read some earlier posts, and it's an open-world shooter? Sounds nice, but if it turns out like Elder Scrolls Online things might get messy... Plus I never could quite get into the "millions of heroes" selling point, mostly because you're all doing the same damn quests. If I'm gonna be a hero, let me be one in my own little story, and everyone else can have theirs somewhere else in the solar system. Hopefully this persistent world stuff can allow for some of that.
I'm still curious about what it is exactly though. MO shooter? MMO? MMORPG??

Working on a manga. With pictures! All feedback welcome!This game seems like it has Borderland's gameplay and quest design. Aka the typical mmo "Kill x amount of enemies" quests. Which is pretty boring to me.
However, one of playable races is pretty much robots so that is awesome to me. Maybe I'll get this if it ever gets released on PC(console only fps? Laaaaaaaaaaaaame)

It doesn't, really. I watched another mission be played last night and the guy doing it said that while the PVP was lackluster the PvE was amazing. And Borderlands ha more quests than that, though I never really finished that game when I got it.
I'm hearing a lot of comparisons to Borderlands, but since I never played those games, it doesn't mean much to me :P I'm not interested in PVP much, so I'm not bothered if that's any good or not. I've registered for the beta though, so I guess I'll find out before too long.
Also, it always amuses me how irritated PC gamers get when consoles get a game they don't :D I'd be surprised if this didn't get a PC release somewhere down the line though.

So, all the information I get about this game says it decides who is in your massive game world automatically on it's own without player input, which sounds awesome but has me a bit worried... you can play with people you decide to play with as well, right?
