I'd hardly call Riven a "loosely connected side villain".

but HOW?

Neither is Crota or Oryx, it's a loose pattern and not absolute. But Atheon, Calus, Insurrection Prime and Sanctified Mind definitely qualify for that. Argos and Val Ca'uor are rather distantly removed, while Aksis is more about mopping up loose ends than being the biggest threat.

Forsaken was a unique Expansion all around because we technically didn't didn't face the top of the Arc Villain chain, Savathun was working through Dul Incaru in the Shattered Throne as a proxy, and was the one who coerced Riven to corrupt Uldren.

So apparently there will be a live event today at 7 EST as Bungie installs an update, with the servers shutting down at 10 EST for maintenance and transferring to the Beyond Light infrastructure. Bungie seems to be downplaying this event, so it's likely not as explosive and nerve wracking as the Almighty's destruction.

Something also buried in the TWAB was that champion mods are apparently going to be armor specific instead of weapons, much like the Unstoppable Pulse Rifle Mod this season. Depending on what the options are for the season, people are discussing how this will cause some crazy exotic weapon builds. If hand cannons get an overload mod, that means Erianas Vow can handle two different champion types, or something like Malfeasance or Thorn with a barrier mod.

Tried logging in to see that limited time event today, but I guess the servers are already down.

It was a special social area in the city.

The summary of the event, is orb mad.

They were really committed to the Story And Gameplay Integration here, the Traveler woke up and emitted an energy pulse trying to push the darkness back at the exact same moment the servers went offline.

Like I said, the expectations for this were a lot smaller than that of destroying the Almighty, we had a clearer timeline of the event but it was really just a Cliffhanger setting up Beyond Light and so that ending wasn't quite as satisfying. But visually it was quite beautiful, the new social space was a surprise and how it progressed over the three hours a lot more obvious.

Looks like Bungie's servers aren't up to the task of handling the huge influx of Day-One players... again. Managed to complete at least the 1st mission before getting booted.

Think I'll wait a couple of days, let the crowd die down a bit.

Most new releases have some spotty server issues on day one. Apparently the queue line was resolved within about 3-4 hours. I had a couple "contacting Destiny servers" incidents but half the time I respawned in the same location rather than kicked into the start menu.

I finished the initial story, it's about 4 hours long putting it right between Shadowkeep and Forsaken. It's always hard to really judge Destiny's story campaigns because even if it's structurally solid much of the story is also being told in the leveling grinding with missions, strikes, quest lines, dungeon, raid and other things we have come to expect from the game. So the story feels pretty short and not particularly immersive (Eramis makes a lot of empty threats and Darkness powers don't seem particularly threatening compared to the likes of Taken or SIVA, plus the visit to the Cosmodrome for the story is just popping in for a couple quest steps), but there is a surprising emotional core between Variks and Eramis. We get an entire cutscene stylizing the whirlwind that devastated the Eliksni, and the the two of them constantly yelling at each other over the comms about what has happened to their dying species.

As for other spoilers, the Exo Stranger confirms she is Elsi Bray and comes from a different timeline where the interaction with the darkness went very differently, which she hopes can be avoided with changes like destroying the black heart in vanilla D1, Guardians engaging with the darkness in a more measured way and defeating Eramis with it. Eramis talks about getting the "body" ready which is not followed up on at the moment, which will likely be a thing for the raid.

Season of the Hunt story trailer. The first official story content involving the return of Crow/Uldren.

I've decided not to buy Beyond Light. I bought the Season pass and I am content to play Crucible for the next 8 weeks to level it up. The last time I bought a DLC despite bad press was Curse of Osiris and it made me quit for 2 years.

Word on the grapevine I'm getting is that most of said bad press is relegated to the whole loot situation, and while that particular mess is indeed pretty dire, buying the expansion won't exactly make it worse- quite the contrary, in fact.

I've also heard that the campaign story's underwritten, but that's same old, same old for Bungie at this point. I imagine that if you can handle Shadowkeep, you can handle Beyond Light.

but HOW?

The negative as I understand it is that A) the Difficulty Spike is rather brutal as light level progression is not aligned with campaign difficulty progression (you would need to grind a half hour between each mission to properly keep pace), B) sunsetting has severely handicapped gear selection and world drops forcing you to fight primarily with blue gear, C) stasis is a mixed bag in gameplay mechanics because of variety of strategies, balancing between classes and fighting against it, D) stasis is hilariously cracked in pvp and E) numerous bugs, glitches and server errors that is common early on.

Positives lies in the story itself, Europa is a brand new destination that is unique and reasonably large, a lot of quality of life improvements like mod-able ghosts and the general look of the game and gameplay itself feels optimized (many suspect due to the Playstation 5 and X Box Series X launch). I would say, ever since The Taken King I've come to learn that a Destiny campaign expansion on release is often only showing you 75% of the story that you can do right away with further content on its way in the following weeks. Both Season of the Hunt and the Raid will show up next week and that's when we can judge the overall story.

I've been playing into the post-campaign story and Clovis Bray is getting a lot of focus in your conversations with the Exo Stranger. Even if not the Raid Boss I would be surprised if he didn't factor into it at all. There is also a hilarious mission where Ghost spends the entire time imitating the Drifter.

People are complaining about the difficulty? Everyone I've seen talking about it has praised BL for finally delivering story content where you can't just stomp everything without even having to think about it.

but HOW?

Specifically the difficulty spike during the campaign, you have to grind a bit outside the story missions in order to keep pace. Once everyone reaches 1250 light the content will be more normalized. For comparison, at Shadowkeep launch you started at 750 with nightmare hunts and nightfall strikes ranked at 820, BL starts at 1050 and the same type of content is at 1180.

The higher difficulty content like the legendary lost sectors do seem to be popular, as they paired exotic gear to solo clears.

The best description I have heard of the situation is that Beyond Light was just the wrong place at the wrong time, the actual expansion is great.

What isn't great is 75% of the loot being rendered unusable, if you thought bungie would keep there word that you could still use them in patrols in stuff, then I would like to sell you some realestate... And of the 25% of the loot that is usable, 2/3rds of it is no longer obtainable.

Paired with the removal of a large number of the planets, 11 crucible maps, and half the strikes, in exchange for.... 2 new strikes, one of which is returning content, and ZERO new crucible maps...

It has left the game feeling a bit barren even if the actual content of the expansion is really nice.

Also Stasis in PVP is mostly just the twitch streamers bitching that there previous tactics no longer work, and people parroting them... Unless your running no resistance which is exactly what they do because its "not meta", stasis abilities do almost no damage, and they take over twice as long to cool down as the normal abilities....

Plus you can just dodge the very visible frost wave coming after you like one of colonies grenades, or shoot it.... or if its one of the fields it takes quite a while to actually do any thing so you can just... leave it.

But no, there used to the corner peeking and style of play where you don't have to react to things like that.

Edit: When I say the diffrence in res, I mean it 0 Resilience 10 Resilience, its almost like it was a deliberate attempt to shake up the meta or something, and so the people who lived on that for 4 years are going to have to change there tactics.

And we saw how well they react to that when they complained that hand canons were no longer the most broken thing in the crucible 2 seasons ago.

Edit Edit: Twice as long to cool down while an accurate descriptor lacks a bit of context, in practice it means that assuming you build for them in the time it takes for a stasis class to regenerate there grenade, a light based class has generated 2/3rds of there super...

I haven't played pvp yet, my brother did and said it isn't as bad as the above video implied but it is an overwhelming presence in the crucible. A sentiment I've experienced and seen elsewhere is that the act of getting frozen isn't very fun anyway.

The meta has definitely been shifted dramatically, and Stasis is evolving as a subclass as players approach max light. Given how dramatic a whole new power set is, balance tuning was guaranteed the first few weeks anyway.

Imca (Veteran)
#14295: Nov 16th 2020 at 1:52:52 PM

Part of the overwhelming presence is also just people enjoying the new toy because it's new, if you give it time its usage will drop back off.

It's like how all the new subclasses were really used for a while, but now you only really see the knife hunters.

Right, between players figuring out the new powers, Bungie issuing balance changes as needed and the fact we are anticipating numerous new content still coming in the next few weeks, this is a particularly chaotic time for the game but especially pvp. Doomsaying that this has broken Destiny entirely is a useless claim.

The other thing is that we have yet to get the rest of the Fragments and our second Aspect, so hopefully when Season of the Hunt starts, it'll improve for the better.

So, the raid, Deep Stone Crypt. Without going too much into spoilers, it's an impressive one, just when you thought Bungie couldn't outdo themselves with the stakes and atmosphere.

Sadly, I was only light level 1220 and the people I play with were about the same. I didn't have any realistic beliefs I could beat it day one, but I never had a chance to explore a raid day one before any videos came out showing what to do. I did check out the first section, took the opportunity to try to figure some of it out even if I was under leveled for it.

The reveals and developments post raid are interesting, including exo technology came directly from experiments with the darkness, the area people glitched into and assumed was the raid was actually a new game type exo challenges, with the giant exo head discovered a still functioning AI of Clovis Bray himself.
