The important part is that it's not in the focus, not that it's behind the other characters.
I do think a two part image would work better.

True, but that's the easiest way to show the trope without resorting to multiple panels, which aren't really necessary.
Does anybody have a screencap of that scene in Paper Mario:The Thousand Year Door when the two Pianta mobsters are beating up a guy in the background?

I know you're not supposed to notice the thing in question, but even after reading the caption, I had to scan the image twice before finding that damned bird. And even then it still relies on the caption to do the work.
I know there are images out there of some average picture where something insanely crazy is happening in the background, like a mime mugging somebody or something.
