So, my dad had an HTC Mogul from Sprint, until we disconnected his service. Now he wants a phone that has wifi capabilities-but we don't want a plan. Just sort of the mini-computer element. The Mogul ended up dying (I think there's hardware error with the port for the charger, he thinks Sprint somehow turned the phone off entirely), so now he can't use it to connect to our Wifi network or play his audio books.

Anyone know what a good non-proprietary piece of hardware would be to replace it? We don't want a cell phone plan.

EDIT: Disregard, I missed the blurb about not anting it hooked up to a plan. Reading comprehension fail, tongue

I just replaced my Mogul, actually. Coincidence. It was given to me, and aside from the extended battery cover locking tab being broken and the finicky slide-out keyboard, it served me well for almost two years. I had thought about getting a custom ROM for it, as I found that Windows Mobile 6.1 sort of sucks.

I was able upgrade my plan for free (two-year contract extension, blah blah) with an LG Optimus S. I like it. It's an android 2.2 OS, and does multi-touch stuff on the screen. Vastly more capable that the Mogul was, and cheap, too. It does wifi, 3G, has GPS, and all that jazz. Good little mid-grade smartphone for those with budget constraints. I'm not sure if the upgrade offer is still available, but if it is, look into it.

Hmmm, I'm half tempted to wipe mine out to factor reset and mail it to you.

Does that work? Dad's concerned that he wouldn't be able to get a phone that doesn't have service to even work at all.

Note that he has a brain tumor, and isn't always rational about these things, but if you have a working phone that doesn't have any service, I'd be happy to buy it off of you.

I'm certain that people on the internet are totally trustworthy!

Guh. He's being finnicky now-insisting on a non-windows phone. I have no idea why... bleh.

I used my Mogul as a web browser via my router's wifi signal for a few months before I put it on a phone plan.

Only phone call you can dial with it is 911, I think, if it's not activated, and you need a wireless router signal to make it do anything at all. A 3G plan smartphone is just way more versatile, even if it means a monthly bill.

But it's pretty beat up. Barely worth the shipping costs at this point. I got my money's worth out of it. smile
