Scions and "Adopted" Visitation

I just got my copy of Scion: Hero, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with something? I know from this site's Scion page that some gods have to "adopt" Scions for whatever reason (of the six default pantheons: Osiris is a eunuch, while Athena & Artermis are fundamentally incapable by virtue of their fate-woven nature, being chaste to the point of asexual and a lesbian respectively... though, strangely, Hera's nature as a goddess of marriage and fidelity doesn't prevent her from bearing Scions to human lovers), which allows them to grant the Visitation on Scions even if they didn't actually sire/bear them, and this is first mentioned in Osiris' profile on page 53 of "Scion: Hero".

However, that entry says "see sidebar" in regards the details; can anyone tell me where the sidebar it's referring to is? Is it even in Hero? I've flicked through the book, but I haven't seen any sign of it, and it's not mentioned in the appendix at the back.

I don't have the books in front of me, but it is in Hero. The short version: Goddesses who can't have their own children can convince other gods to let them 'adopt' Scions as their own. This can only happen before the Scion awakens to their divine heritage, and usually requires a fair bit of politicking to acquire. Even gods with loads of unawakened children (*cough*Zeus*cough*) aren't just going to give them away because another god/dess is unable to have their own children the regular way.

Of course, you can ignore that; just look at the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, where Artemis has a child by a male lover (and goes to great lengths to keep it a secret).

Yeah, I found the sidebar in question is on page 63; I don't know how I missed it. Thank you for posting an answer, though.

Nice point. You know, given how belief at least partially shapes reality in Scion, a part of me wonders if maybe Artemis is such a fixated lesbian (I mean, even Hera, considered by the Greeks & Romans to be the stiffest, coldest, most asexual of all the gods — Hades is randier then she is — is willing to run around with human men and pop out Scions) because of pop culture belief in her as an "icon" of female homosexuality. Everyone hears about the asking Zeus to never be married and running around only with women, forgets about the fact she was worshipped as a mother goddess in her own right in some places and that there's a version of the Orion myth where she actually was kind of interested in him, even letting him hunt with her, but Apollo grew jealous and tricked her into killing him and so she hung him in the sky in stars out of grief, and... well, you can see how it's gone.

My gaming group and I are planning on trying this game soon, and one thing I've wondered about adoption: Can there be "cross-culture" adoption? For example, could a child of Baron Samedi be adopted by Athena?

I don't see why not; but after the adoption, the Scion is a child of Athena, not Samedi. No double-dipping for bloodline purviews. tongue

Fair enough; but do the kids ever learn of their status? Like, later on, might refer to themselves as "the biological daughter of Bastet, adopted by Osiris".
