They used a cold virus to trick the immune system into fighting cocaine and preventing all effects.

That is awesome.

I'm hoping this technique can be used for other problems.

I have no doubt that it can be adapted. The problem I see is this process will be/has already been patented and that will drastically limit the number of minds that can work on expanding its usues.

I think the thing to remember here though is that it doesn't stop the person receiving the vaccine from being addicted, it just stops them from getting a buzz from cocaine. So if used to treat addicts they could just as easily find another drug to get their buzz... or worse yet continue to snort coke until they OD. I think scarier still though is the thought of it being used preventativly. Sure it would bring drug trafficking and all related crimes and violence to its knees but the thought of authorities having the ability to control what your body can and cannot do leaves me severely unsettled.

Just make it voluntary like all other vaccines.

Not quite. Vaccination is compulsory for children to be allowed to attend school at least where you and I are from though I cannot speak for other countries.

As long as it's voluntary, this seems like a good thing. If it's mandatory (which I really don't see happening), then there's a problem.

Also, cost might be an issue. If it's expensive, then the people who need it most might not be able to afford it.

If anything it's interesting as all get out. Man I really feel like I'm in the future sometimes...

Only certain vaccines are mandatory, and those are mostly to prevent rather nasty diseases from spreading like wildfire through schools. This isn't even in the same ballpark.

It seems like it'd be immensely helpful against the psychological parts of the addiction - the craving it because of the feeling you get rather than a physical dependency. Couple it with a rehab program designed to help with the physical dependency and you'll probably decrease the relapse rate.

BTW, I'm a chick.

I'm not going to bother giving detailed reasons behind my question, because they're pretty much "I heard a couple things somewhere that I don't really remember that well." So I'll just ask an open question to anyone whose knowledge is related to the subject: is there a chance that people vaccinated against cocaine would be unable to enjoy chocolate?

I think that the vaccine, if effective, would prevent (or at least make more difficult) OD-ing, since the immune system would be targeting the molecules before they bond to neuroprocessors.

It makes me wonder if the vaccine would leave people who took it unable to be treated with other medicines from the same source. Imagine getting a prescription for a painkiller that literally does nothing.
