I always chalked that up to him Going Native in the literal millennia he spent among humans, but it being very very slow and him not noticing it.

I mean. That wasn't just about Kyubey. The arrival of Walpurgisnacht was an unwinnable scenario up until Madoka's save-scummed power made it possible to defeat her. Although Kyubey's indirectly responsible for its existence, he has zero direct responsibility for bringing Walpurgisnacht to Mitakihara.

Things might have gone very differently if not for the looming arrival of Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies Incarnate.

Except Kyubey waa the one who engineered the scenario where only Homura and Madoka survived to see it every time. They deliberately get Mami, Sayaka and Kyoko (for what little she was involved) killed before then in every timeline.

Mama got herself killed via overconfidence. Sayaka always goes full witch (and you never go full witch) and probably doesn't really need Kyuubey's help (though I can consider that he probably put his filthy little hands in things in a few timelines), and Kyouko at least in the one we saw chose to get herself killed and die with Sayaka.

Now, I'm not saying you're 100% wrong, because I can see the little bugger using a lot of technical truths to stir the pot, but considering Urobuchi's style, it's more likely the girls deaths were as much their own faults and flaws as it was him.

Edit: And I know it's weird of me to say this considering my massive hate for Kyuubey. Never liked the little turd, but I can't really ignore the direction the narrative would go in.

Yeah it seems like the only thing Kyubey did was grant their wishes (and AFAIK its not really something they can stop in the nigh-improbably event they wanted to, they're kinda more like catalysts in a sense). Though in Mami's case, AFAIK, she was gonna die if she didn't make her wish, so she's damned if she did and damned if she didn't (though IIRC there were a few timelines where Mami was saved from Charlotte).

Kyubey set them up to fail, though. It's not like he directly pushed them, but he always told the girls just enough that they'd do what they want. I'd say Kyubey doesnt understand the extent of Madoka's selflessness or Homura's obsession, but they seem to have a pretty solid grasp on how the girls will react to the info they feed them.

In Different Story at least Mami would've made it to Walpurgisnacht if she hadn't killed herself. And Kyoko could have if she hadn't used up her last Grief to save Mami and died fighting another Witch as a result.

And then there was a bonus Oriko chapter where in one timeline the two of them were going to go fight Walpurgisnacht. Wish that had gotten more if only to see how Homura reacted...

Kyubey would have met their quota early if they'd switch targets to feeding on the non-Euclidean and self-propagating Nerd Rage of forum arguments. The average flame war generates more emotions than an all-girl's class.

Okay I want to ask if there were any deviations in Oriko's goals in Magia Record, like is she still hellbent on killing Madoka or not, especially considering the whole Doppel thing

I don't have Oriko to check her personal story, but the first part of Kirika's has Oriko task her with roughing up Mami and company and pumping them for information, emphatically without killing them. (And also picking up some tea. There's a nice shop in Kamihama.) So whatever she's doing seems to be less homicide-focused than the original manga.

That story also has Kirika getting angry and wanting to fight Oriko's nightmares for ruining her sleep, because Kirika is bestgirl.

Oriko's story has her investigating why she can't see the future in Kamihama, she ends up not really doing much.

I am in the process of borrowing Puella Magi Tart Magica.^note Unfortunately it appears to have been miscatalogued In the meantime, the premise of Joan of Arc selling her soul to become a superpowered lich who will transform into one of the Eldritch Abominations she fights is one of the most Warhammer 40,000 premises that isn't actually Warhammer 40,000 I've heard of.

Wouldactually be interesting to see Madoka and related media play out in the 40k verse.

I actually had a bit of a plot bunny for a 40k/Madoka Fusion Fic. An Inquisitor discovers a strange chain of young girls suddenly gaining psychic powers and fighting daemons with the predictable consequences. He investigates and discovers the Kyubey Expy (I imagine instead of promising that they become magical girls, they have "the powers of the saint" or something) who of course turns out to be a daemon in the end and gets a few hundred bolter rounds or so to his face.

So, my big sister came over from Las Vegas (she's a gynecologist there) and she's staying over until Halloween.

She's also a big Sailor Moon fan, gets birthday presents related to that franchise and wrote fan-fiction shipping the Senshi and the Crystal Knights when she was younger (she's in her mid-to-late twenties now) and once cosplayed as that green-haired one.

I'm sure you can see where this is going.

I've texted her tonight and asked her if she wants to watch the show. She didn't know what I was talking about at first so I only said that it's a magical girl show, it's pretty good, and it's on Netflix and goes up to 11 or 12 episodes.

She said "sure".

I'm going to try to document her reactions to the show though only after she's done with an episode because she might find it a bit weird if I have a laptop nearby while she's watching it.

I dunno how I feel about the old "spook unsuspecting victim with Madoka" prank, but on the other hand, a big fan of Sailor Moon may be more prepared for a show like this than you might assume.

In other news, plugging away at free-to-play Magia Record finally delivered a Madoka and a Sayaka, putting me 60% of the way to having the full original squad, if we count the freebie "Glasses Homura." At this point I feel like maybe the best plan is to just hoard gems until Ultimate Madoka comes out, apparently that one is super overpowered.

I'm saving some gems for her as well. But I'm not sure if her power stems from her stats or the fact that she carries an extra passive ability on top of the Memoria slots (and thus can technically get 2 abilities with just her and up to 5 depending on how much of her destiny gems you have).

BTW if you'replaying Magi Reco and planning on 100% Completion of the Halloween Pv P event...All I can say is that you better have Alina or a 4* Miyako because certain missions are completely impossible otherwise.

I did manage to clear the That One Sidequest thing with the stun requirement, after several tries, with Madoka+Hinano. Looks like there's a second round of that later though. Seems like you're supposed to just use that memoria from the shop, except they don't allow memorias for this event because of a bug or something.

I took my sister through the first two episodes.

Episode one:

• She talked a bit about how the characters remind her of Sailor Moon characters: Sayaka and Hitomi remind her of Sailor Mercury and Sailor Neptune while Homura reminded her of Sailor Pluto (mostly because of their hair and eye colors).

• We briefly shot the shit about whether Kyuubey was Artemis or Luna. She says Artemis because it's a white cat and a boy while I said Luna because Luna is the first one Usagi meets and Madoka seems to be the protagonist. She brought up that she might be Sailor Venus and that the Sailor Moon manga had Sailor Venus in a video game.

• She wondered about why Kyuubey didn't want to make Hitomi a Magical Girl so I told her that he didn't care about her. Her reaction? "Well, that's horrible."

Episode two:

• She chuckled at Hitomi's scenes where she overreacts to the possibility of lesbians.

• At Mami's unleashing of her arsenal on the Witch (whose name I'm not aware of), she had the choice words of "dang, that's hot".

• She might think Homura might become a witch.

She thinks the show's pretty cool right now so I'm going to finish episode three with her tomorrow.
