Saw this, was not amused.

Anyone seeing food prices going up a lot where they live? I've noticed it here a bit - SPAM costs over three bucks a can now.

Yep, prices on meat and grain products especially are going up where I live. Every few days they're adding a few cents more to the price tags.

Corn prices have fucking surged in the last 5 years because of eco-hippies obsession with ethanol based fuels that ruin a car's efficiency and performance. (Seriously, no matter how well I'd take care of my car, ethanol fuel has been making it's mileage just go down and down and down.)

Corn is for eating not burning!

I wonder how expensive rice and sugar is now, that shit is my STAPLE man......

Imported rice (from Thailand/Japan/China) is probably going to jack up, esp. shit like Jasmine and the multicolored rice...but that shit i already expensive.

Also, shrimp is already expensive as the regional sources have been damaged from the oil spill so nothing new.

/me does not eat SPAM so I don't give a shit about that... tongue

also can someone please post the full link, as they want me to register for that page.

.....what about the increasing urban and suburban sprawl over regions like the midwestern "heartland" of the USA which decreases the available land, among other things like the fact that the resources are starting to deplete (depleted aquifers, degraded land, etc)

Politicians from corn producing states seem the most likely culprit to me.

In all honesty, a lot of those "eco-hippies" have realized corn ethanol is a really damned bad idea. Even Al Gore came out strongly against them. The only reason they keep passing is because the Midwestern/Rust Belt states have a strangehold over national politics.

Environmentalists have been against corn biodiesel for as long as I can remember, for the fact that the corn is grown with petrochemical fertilizers, which require a lot of energy to process and kind of defeat the entire purpose of biodiesel.

Also, subsidized monoculture = bad, although that's a different issue.

Do a little research and follow the money. Back in the 80s, when there were surpluses of corn, Archer Daniels Midland "donated" boatloads of money to politicians to get tax subsidies for ethanol research. Duane Andreas, the CEO of ADM, was GHW Bush's biggest backer. ADM got top dollar for their extra corn, a few people made a lot of money doing bogus studies, and the rest of us got shafted. Biofuels don't work, they're not supposed to work, they are and always have been a boondoggle.

Ivy, you seem to be restricting it to "smart" environmentalists. You shouldn't use a segment of the group that is borderline non-existant.

Fight smart, not fair.
