With all this talk of ducks, is anyone else thinking of what I'm thinking of?

About the SMBC cartoon.

As far as I know, cat reproduction is kind of scary. A cat penis has spines. They're designed that way because the stimulus from sex is what signals the female cat's ovaries to release eggs, so it needs to be like that for pregnancy to happen.

I've always wondered about that. Is it more like "ribbed for her pleasure", or is there actual injury and pain involved? surprised

I'm not actually sure. I'm guessing it'd be uncomfortable at the very least.

I know way too many facts about animal reproduction right now - I'm taking a subject. One memorable fact was kind of cute in a wierd way, but most are just plain revolting.

[up][up] The female lets out a jowl, but I don't know if it's out of pleasure or of pain.

The main reason why I would not want to be a female cat is actually the aggressiveness of the male, as he bites down on the female's scruff and subdues her as he's having sex.

Being bitten on the scruff is not painful, but it is dominating and subduing and that's why I wouldn't like it done to me.

According to my lectures it's actually not a dominance thing, it's more a testing-the-waters thing. He bites the female, if she gives him a claw across the face for his troubles then he knows he should back off. If she lets him do it, full steam ahead.

But, well, I've never even owned a cat so who knows if that's true.

Which means only submissive females end up being the ones to procreate.

I now have one more reason to love my human ability to copulate belly-to-belly.

@Loni Jay: Very true. My female cat? Every once in a while, a male cat in the neighborhood will come along and bother her, she's left each and every one limping away.

Regarding Ducks:

I'm sure anyone would like to be a female duck as usually they are gang raped in mating season.
Not to mention the 'arms race' of spirally duck genitalia and the homosexual necrophilia that comes with discussing duck breeding.

I still have absolutely no idea how the anti-rape defenses of a female duck make sense from an evolutionary stand point.

I guess I'll figure it out in my bio class eventually.

Hmm, I guess, but it would be much easier to mate with a female duck whose genitals are weaker, so you'd think they wouldn't develop such a mechanism.

Presumably the ducks with weak defences get mated with by the inferior males, so their children are more likely to die, while the ducks with strong defences can pick and choose and end up selecting the fitter ones?

Hey, that actually makes sense.

It wouldn't stop a strong male from successfully mating with a female with weak defenses, though.

That's true, but seeing as sperm are 'cheaper', mating with one weak female doesn't actually decrease his chances of having surviving offspring with some other female. Females get less chances, because they can only have a small number of offspring per breeding season, so having that chance 'wasted' on inferior sperm is a bigger deal.

The male duck's penis is spiral-shaped: like a corkscrew, it twists in a counter-clockwise direction so that sperm will target the oviduct on the female's left-hand side. In almost all birds only the left ovary is functional, but in a 2007 study, Brennan and colleagues noticed that in ducks the female's vagina twists in the opposite direction.

To see whether these clockwise twists and turns would make copulation more difficult for the male, the group managed to get male ducks to unfurl their penises into glass tubes shaped like a female's vagina. The males found it difficult to evert their penises down the length of the tube – which is what the team reckons happens in the vagina.

Brennan thinks that, while the males are evolving long and flexible penises to help them force copulations, the females are using their complex vaginal anatomy to take back control over which sperm fertilises their eggs. When a female wants to mate with her chosen partner, she can make the process easier by relaxing the muscles around the vagina entrance.
