I would suggest King Dedede, since he fits the bill of being a king for no reason other than him saying he is.

And how could we tell that by looking at him?

I vote leaving this imageless. Otherwise we'll likely hit Just A Face And A Caption. It's almost impossible to show this trope in a picture.

Sure it's picturable; we just need to find the right one.

I'm thinking not picturable.

Not picturable till shown otherwise. King Dedede is most certainly Just A Face And A Caption less one can convey he's king of nothing.

[up]That does not show anything beyond he doesn't have a very fancy castle. Nothing shows that he's a self-proclaimed ruler in that picture.

How about a picture of Emperor Norton I? He first popped in my head when I first saw this trope.

What image of him would indicate the trope to someone unfamiliar with him?

Yeah, you know, I suppose the phrase "Emperor of the United States" on a Real Life picture pretty much gets the idea across.

I was thinking that scans of some of the panels from the Sandman story that featured Emperor Norton would work, but either of those first two would be fine provided they look good at wiki size. I don't know so much about the gravestone.

The gravestone is at wiki size, and any of them would be good.

In that case, this should be the picture:

Maybe the King of Homestar Runner.com? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he refer to himself as the King of the Town?

Ok yes, I know, I'm using the example of the Trope Namer...but yeah

He's...the Trope Namer for a reason.

And that image links to nowhere.

He's the Trope Namer, but does he show the trope? The previous images of him doesn't seem to show the trope in a still image well.

For comparison's sake, here's the plaque and pic, both at wiki size. For me, it's plaque > pic > gravestone

Well I guess I can look for more images.

(I should really be doing my homework)

But yeah, he would show the trope (being the trope namer)....I'll see what I can try to find.

Edit: If the image is having problems I apologize, I don't know why it wouldn't work, it's working fine on my end.

[up] Generally people assume that, but it my time in image picking I've found that trope namers tend to be some of the worst at showing a trope to those who don't know them. There's a lot lost in a single still image.

Crowner.

Personally, I like Edward Norton, since everyone can reasonbly be expected to now that the U.S. does not have an Emperor.

Emperor Norton all the way.

The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.
