I've read about child soldiers and you have to understand that its the only thing they know and they aren't educated or have a long life expectancy on top of it.
@Raw: your using the a character from an anime, one that is in part a comedy and a mecha, and Full Metal Panic was pretty much a standard "soldiers and mechs are cool"

Well he's talking about WWII when the Chinese bomb pearl harbor and they commuted suicide by running their planes into the ship.![]()
The writers seem to have a firm grasp on military hardware, chain-of-command, etc. Did you read those novels?
The problem is that even if it has an understanding of terms and ideas, I was watching the anime and saw a giant 5-story tall mech going through Tokyo after hiding in a commercial barge.
I don't think that is the proper source for real-world comparisons.
Evidently one of the Gundam series did an okay job of showing child soldiers but wasn't the whole thing with the guy wasn't that he was a child soldier but some type of soldier trained from birth in Black Ops?

Knowing your military technology, though, does not guarantee a strong grasp of child psychology. Or any kind of psychology, really. Certainly, the novels seem to have some kind of weird sexual hangups to them that are thankfully played down slightly in the anime (for instance, I'm pretty sure we didn't need to know that X minor evil female scientist has a choking fetish).

What's precedent ever done for us?No. They didn't. And how would you know if they did or not? It's like being asked if your translator is doing a good job: if you can't speak the language, how the fuck do you know if they're translating everything properly or just bullshitting you? Just because something sounds right, doesn't mean it is. And to someone who's completely inexperienced or unknowledgable to that field, the bar for "seems right" drops drastically.
You basically got Dan Browned by anime, and used it for an argument.

I'm gonna go with the guy who's actually in the military right now on this.
As to the earlier statement of "America can't win wars"...we can, we just no longer like how messy they are. Because now, thanks to CNN, we can see it in full-color detail. Rather than Vietnam, I blame Mogadishu for the current pussy-footing around regarding deployment of troops. That was a cluster-fuck, made worse by the fact that everyone blamed the military for it happening.
If I were to write some of the strange things that come under my eyes they would not be believed. ~Cora M. Strayer~The thing is that I can call Vietnam a tactical military victory but as far as the war itself, we failed because of bizarre strategic decisions. Not attacking the entire Ho Chi Minh trail and entering North Vietnam counts as two of these issues, as with the various DMZ and no-fly zones.

Well he's talking about WWII when the Chinese bomb pearl harbor and they commuted suicide by running their planes into the ship. The ranks were horrible, for one.
There is no such thing as making Major when you aren't old enough to drink yet, and even with the high-speed promotion of the Army that gets joked about these days, you'll never see a Sergeant under 20.
But he enlisted at age five!
Okay, I get it, they didn't do the research on this one... or Artistic License.
'''YOU SEE THIS DOG I'M PETTING? THAT WAS COURAGE WOLF.Cute, isn't he?^Put that soft-spoken, 15-year-old clumsy bitch in charge of a real military organization and see if she gets a lick of respect.
And thy have no sense of structure. A Sergeant Major in charge of two Sergeants as a team? What the hell were you thinking other than "these rank names sound cool"?
"True story, I came when I read Scrye's story, and so did everyone within five miles." —OOZEThen again, it's supposed to be one of those N.G.O. Superpower organizations. But that doesn't excuse the inaccuracies.
Fight smart, not fair.![]()
She gets the job done, doesn't she? Authority Equals Asskicking in militaries? Is it necessary to have a deep voice and a Lantern Jaw of Justice and swear a lot to be respected and obeyed?
(By all means, let us continue: when one is Dan Browned and doesn't know it, one want to find out the exact extent of the dan browning, with a little help from these gentlemen).

'''YOU SEE THIS DOG I'M PETTING? THAT WAS COURAGE WOLF.Cute, isn't he?She doesn't get the job done most of the time, that's people under her command. She'd make a good cheerleader, not a commander.
Fight smart, not fair.... But... her tactics? Her magistral use of the submarine? Her getting them out of the most desperate situations? Are you telling me her second-in-command, who has proven to be a massive badass, respects her because of an Informed Ability?
'''YOU SEE THIS DOG I'M PETTING? THAT WAS COURAGE WOLF.Cute, isn't he?Well, for one thing we never ever see them getting injured or killed there: Infant Immortality. Even in Spriggam, which is about a Tyke-Bomb. Exception: Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Now this makes me wonder: why is there a rarity if media showing the military's life from their own perspective, rather than from that of civilians? The only film I remember that really did that was Waltz With Bachir, which had a really fucking retarded Aesop (It's not your fault, you didn't kill those sandnigger children, women, and elderly, it was the Christian Phalangists, they did it all.
'''YOU SEE THIS DOG I'M PETTING? THAT WAS COURAGE WOLF.Cute, isn't he?Why aren't there more Hollywood guys who are also military guys?
'''YOU SEE THIS DOG I'M PETTING? THAT WAS COURAGE WOLF.Cute, isn't he?Because military guys tend to be more blue collar than red carpet.
Authority does not equal asskicking in the military. Asskicking equals asskicking.
You're also not helping your case by assuming such things.
As much as its not completely realistic, read or watch Generation Kill. It gives you a pretty good insight on the military's views towards authority.

"True story, I came when I read Scrye's story, and so did everyone within five miles." —OOZEMovies are about entertainment, not perspective. Movies that attempt to capture reality normally tank. See: Jarhead
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Jarhead got it right. Swofford was a total cunt, but the parts about having nothing to do but beat off were pretty accurate.

@ Post 72: Because it's fiction and it was written by someone who has never in their life been a child soldier.
