No, IJBM was there first, then It's Just Awesome was created, then It's Just Awesome was renamed to IJAM because it flowed better and was a nice reflection of IJBM.

I wasn't really in favor of creating It's Just Awesome at the time, to be honest. I thought it was somewhat silly.

IJAM was created after requests for someplace people could talk about stuff they liked without having to defend it from other people who didn't like it. It was not made as a counterweight to IJBM.

Huh. I wish I could go back and doublecheck what I read, but I think it was on IJBM.

I thought IJBM was supposed to be a place where people could complain without having to defend against people who loved it.

I think what I just said doesn't imply "baseless criticism."

It doesn't, but it attracts people who are in bad moods and are therefore more likely to cause a problem.

Well, yes. My point was that it sounds like the other side of the coin to "a place where people could talk about what they like without having to defend it."

IJAM was created after requests for someplace people could talk about stuff they liked without having to defend it from other people who didn't like it.

And that's a good reason to keep it and a good reason not to expand it to something that would attract those sorts of people.

For instance, Tomu is here now and he thinks this forum is silly. If we rename it something less IJAM-ish and he remains around, thinking it's silly, he is likely to get into threads of people gushing about stuff and then dis on them for doing so, thereby recreating the problem that the forum was originally created to avoid.

The counterargument is that with a strict no disagreement policy in IJAM, discussion doesn't happen, and the subforum stagnates.

Wait, IJAM has a strict no disagreement policy?

I knew that it was generally accepted that "This is happy place!" But I didn't know it was a written rule.

Bleh. Now I like IJAM even less.

If IJAM is just "Hey, let's be positive without having a discussion about it" and that is the current intention of the subforum, and the mods want to keep it that way, yeah-don't rename it.

Not sure why anyone approved the crowner in the first place then, however.

It's not. People are talking about the possibility. In this thread.

Early on, I think there was a zealous removal of non-glowing posts, which scared away all of the interesting discussion.

The conversation in this thread has returned to the idea of enforcing "don't talk bad about stuff," which sounds like, "don't disagree with the people who like that stuff."

I'm increasingly getting exhausted arguing the point, and in the mood to just concede so as to not have to deal with it. Fortunately, it's really not my call or responsibility in the first place, leaving my exhaustion a moot point.

Which sounds amazingly stupid and not at all conducive to a good deal of activity and discussion. Disagreements happen and are a natural part of good and interesting conversation. ONE MUST HAVE PAIN AND STRIFE IF ONE IS TO HAVE A FULL LIFE.

Maybe we should put pros/cons into the crowner entries.

Even if we somehow end up with a consensus to change the name, how we know Fast Eddie won't immediately shoot us down with "There are no plans to change IJAM's name. Changing the name will invite complaining. We don't do complaining"? He might even find it funny to use my exact words.

Fast Eddie-a number of pages back-seemed a bit open to the idea of a name change.

Tomu: Why do you even care? The absolute worst outcome, for you, is that there continues to be a forum that you don't like and don't have to visit. Why do you feel the need to go on a crusade against things other people like but you don't?

We should substitute the word B for A in that ;D

Random Musings + IJAM is redudnant. Random Musins > IJAM. Random Musings > NOT Random Musings.

Ergo, the optimum solution is to rename IJAM to Random Musings and have it be more than one page wonders.

To be perfectly clear, I'd be just fine with adding Random Musings. Redundancy doesn't bother me that much.

Personally I think your math's off, but in any case, that still doesn't answer why Random Musings wouldn't be redundant with Yack Fest.

(Also, the crowner's still messed up: going by yeas and nays it's currently at 25-22, instead of 27-20.)

Random Musings is more philosophical while Yack Fest is just a lot of people chattering?

Yeah, I mean, Random Musings isn't really what I would have picked for a name, but it's the frontrunner so I'm running with it.

However, what's probably the best decision is to ignore whether or not a rename would make the forum itself a better place meaningfully and just realize that a rename will get a bunch of people to start being bitchy about it, and the forum has enough of that to deal with as is.

People who want a rename seem to be in slightly greater quantity but in a lesser quality of bitchiness.

Squeaky wheel gets the oil, concede to the most obnoxious, etc, but I don't see a huge problem either way.
